Dragons in Christianity and Christian Religious Culture

As mentioned earlier, dragons were seen as mythical creatures known to protect or destroy. When the Christianity began spreading, so did the notion that dragons were dangerous, sinister creatures.

The most popular and perhaps significant references to dragons in Christian history are the following:

  • Book of Job, chapter 41
  • Revelations chapters 12 and 20
  • Isaiah, chapter 27

These verses describe a great, big, fire-breathing monster that lives deep into the sea called Leviathan. In some verses, Leviathan is used as referring to the fallen angel.

Book of Job, Chapter 41, verses 19 to 21 reads:

  • “Its back has rows of shields tightly sealed together; each is so close to the next that no air can pass between. They are joined fast to one another; they cling together and cannot be parted. Its snorting throws out flashes of light; its eyes are like the rays of dawn.”
  • “Flames stream from its mouth; sparks of fire shoot out. Smoke pours from its nostrils as from a boiling pot over burning reeds. Its breath sets coals ablaze, and flames dart from its mouth.”

The verses from Revelations and Isaiah refer to the fallen angel and Leviathan as a dragon.

  • Revelation 12 verse 3: “Then another sign appeared in heaven: and behold, a great red dragon having seven heads and ten horns, and on his heads were seven diadems.”
  • Isaiah 27 verse 1: “In that day the Lord will punish Leviathan the fleeing serpent, with His fierce and great and mighty sword, even Leviathan the twisted serpent; And He will kill the dragon who lives in the sea.”

Some Christian religious paintings also feature dragons as a creature to be defeated and trampled. An example is Saint George and the Dragon painting adapted by various artists.

Historical Dragon Paintings: European vs. Chinese Style

Nine Dragons by Chen Rong (1244) – Chinese

Nine Dragons is a scroll painting by Chinese artist Chen Rong painted in 1244. It measures 46.3 cm × 1496.4 cm and is read and observed from right to left. Nine Dragons painting features nine dragons apparitions lying and soaring through the clouds, rocky mountains, fire, and mists.

The number nine is auspicious in Chinese culture, and the nine dragons are said to symbolize the nine sons of the Chinese Dragon King, also known as the Dragon God, over water and weather. In Chinese culture, he is regarded as the god who dispenses rain.

Saint George and the Dragon by Raphael (1505) – European

Saint George and The Dragon is a small oil on wood painting by Italian High Renaissance painter Raphael. It depicts the European lore of Saint George rescuing a village from the oppression of a dragon. The dragon was said to have terrorized the villagers by demanding human sacrifices.

Raphael wasn’t the only one to paint a depiction of this story. Peter Paul Rubens also created a Baroque-style painting of the same subjects called Saint George and the Dragon between 1605–1607.

People living outside of China had all but forgotten about dragons and their impact until fantasy TV series and literature became popular. Some of these television series featuring dragons were adapted from literature such as the Harry Potter novels by J.K. Rowling, The Lord of the Rings by J.R.R. Tolkien, and Game of Thrones Books by George R.R Martin.

Before then, many parts of the world, excluding China, had forgotten that dragons were prominent. But now, you’ll find paintings of dragons littered across the internet in tribute to the ubiquitous fire-breathing creatures from the Game of Thrones franchise.

GHG Protocol Scope: Everything You Need to Know

What is the GHG protocol? The GHG protocol is a set of guidelines that are used to determine the level of GHG emissions in an area and how much GHG it takes to produce one kilogram of carbon dioxide. In 1948, these standards were developed by the International Energy Agency (IEA) and have been updated several times since then.

Effective GHG Guidelines 

These guidelines have been modified to include new energy efficiency and emissions reduction standards. The guidelines also guide on using renewable GHG protocols in three areas: Scope 1, 2, and 3. Scope 1 is choosing the right product to buy and minimizing your impact on the environment.

Scope 2 is reducing what you do to the environment and creating less waste (using reusable grocery bags instead of plastic bags). Finally, Scope 3 is donating your extra time and money to organizations that are trying to preserve the planet for future generations.

GHG Protocol Scopes 1, 2, and 3

These are the three scopes of the GHG protocol and how you can choose your path.

The First Scope

The goal of this protocol is to reduce GHGs by 80% from 2010 levels by the end of 2050. The GHG protocol will achieve this goal through a combination of reducing emissions from the energy sector, increasing energy efficiency, and increasing the uptake of renewable energy.

The way scope 1 works is by identifying and characterizing GHG sources, sinks, and greenhouse gas effects. Subsequently, it aims to measure the concentration of GHGs in the atmosphere and determine their effect on global warming. Finally, it then predicts how long it will take to reach a given level of global warming if the level of CO2 emissions continues to increase. This will be followed by an estimation of how bad the problem will get if steps are not taken.

The Second Scope

An ideal protocol must include a mechanism for reporting and managing progress toward meeting the goals of Scope 1. This scope describes the second phase of work in the development of a protocol for reducing greenhouse gas emissions from businesses.

Scope 2 of the GHG Protocol (environmental management practices) guides how to integrate an aspiration to reduce GHGs into existing programs and processes. This scope includes recommendations regarding the integration of greenhouse gases (GHG). It also addresses reduction through other sustainability objectives, such as land use and biomass production, renewable energy development, climate resilience, and economic development.

The Third Scope

The GHG Protocol is a customizable, actionable framework to enable organizations as they attempt to identify, quantify, and manage greenhouse gas emissions. It is designed to be simple to use yet powerful enough to help organizations see the big picture.

In some cases, only specialized tools or consultants can offer this service. The Scope 3 GHG Protocol provides a comprehensive range of metrics covering 16 energy classes. These energy classes include natural gas, propane, electricity, heat, cooling, heating, and refrigerant in general-purpose gasses. It also includes hydrocarbons in petrochemical industries and fuel oil.

Three life cycle phases (product life cycle, operational maintenance, and disposal), and five end-of-life stages (resource depletion) are also put into consideration.

Yahoo now has a 25% stake in Taboola

Yahoo has just finalized a 30-year exclusive advertising partnership in Taboola, which would secure a 25% stake in the company. This deal will allow Yahoo to use Taboola’s tech to manage its native ads.

Taboola’s native edge. Taboola specializes in native ads which can be found on popular sites like CNN and MSN. The ads typically look like part of the website and can be informative or entertaining.

However, shares of Taboola have fallen nearly 80% since last year. In January, it merged with a special purpose acquisition company and was valued at $2.6 billion.

The deal with Yahoo gives Taboola the exclusive license to sell native ads across Yahoo’s sites, and the companies will share revenue from those ad sales. The companies did not disclose the terms of the revenue split. The deal will make Yahoo Taboola’s largest shareholder.

Twitter has launched 3 new ad targeting options

Twitter has just launched new ad targeting options, including a new ‘Conversions’ objective they originally announced back in August.

The new ‘Conversions’ objective. Advertisers are now able to focus their ad campaigns on those users who are most likely to take specific actions.

Previously, Twitter advertisers were able to optimize campaigns to focus on clicks, site visits, and conversions. But now you can further optimize for page views, content views, add-to-cart, and purchases.

As I mentioned, the updates were announced in August but released just before Thanksgiving.

What Twitter says. “Website Conversions Optimization (WCO) is a major rebuild of our conversion goal that will improve the way advertisers reach customers who are most likely to convert on a lower-funnel website action (e.g. add-to-cart, purchase).”

So instead of just aiming to reach people who are likely to tap on your ad, you can expand that focus to reach users that are more likely to take next-step actions beyond that, like:

  • Add-to-cart
  • Purchase
  • Register contact info
  • Subscribe

“Our user-level algorithms will then target with greater relevance, reaching people most likely to meet your specific goal – at 25% lower cost-per-conversion on average, per initial testing.”

Dynamic Product Ads. Dynamic Product Ads were initially launched in 2016 (a version at least). But this new update integrates a more privacy-focused approach, in order to optimize ad performance with potentially fewer signals.

Collection Ads. The Collection Ads format enables advertisers to share a primary hero image, along with smaller thumbnail images below it.

Twitter says, “The primary image remains static while people can browse through the thumbnails via horizontal scroll. When tapped, each image can drive consumers to a different landing page.”

So, let’s start from the beginning. If you take credit cards, you must be PCI compliant. PCI compliance is required by all organizations that process, store, or transmit credit card information. This includes businesses of all sizes, from small mom-and-pop shops to large corporations.

PCI compliance is not optional — it’s mandatory. And there are serious consequences for businesses that don’t comply. If you’re found to be non-compliant, you could be fined by your credit card processor or even lose the ability to accept credit cards altogether. We will speak about it later in more detail.

Simply put, it’s a set of security standards that all businesses must meet in order to process credit cards safely and securely. The term “PCI” comes from the name of the committee responsible for developing these standards, the Payment Card Industry Security Standards Council (PCI SSC). This group describes them as a set of data security requirements and practices that can be applied to any organization involved in storing, transmitting, or processing credit cards. These security requirements are broken down into 12 main areas. It’s important to understand that PCI compliance doesn’t just address credit card data; it also covers storing other types of sensitive data such as social security numbers and employee personal information.

So, if your organization processes, stores, or transmits credit card data, you need to be aware of PCI compliance. Originally, the PCI security standards were designed to reduce credit card fraud and help you meet this requirement. As we have already said, the PCI Data Security Standard addresses 12 main areas of concern:

  1. Protect cardholder data.
  2. Maintain a vulnerability management program.
  3. Implement strong access control measures.
  4. Encrypt transmission of cardholder data.
  5. Use and regularly update anti-virus software.
  6. Develop and maintain secure systems and applications.
  7. Restrict access to cardholder data by business need-to-know.
  8. Assign a unique ID to each person with computer access.
  9. Restrict physical access to cardholder data.
  10. Track and monitor all access to network resources and cardholder data.
  11. Regularly test security systems and processes.
  12. Maintain a policy that addresses information security for all personnel. This policy should include procedures for detecting security breaches and reporting security violations to the appropriate individuals.

Small businesses are not exempt from PCI DSS requirements and must take steps to secure cardholder data. For small businesses with no more than 10 employees, PCI DSS includes the following requirements: Install and maintain a firewall configuration to protect cardholder data. Protect stored cardholder data. Protect transmitted cardholder data. Maintain an information security policy. Regularly test security systems and processes. Maintain a vulnerability management program. Protect all systems against malware and regularly install security updates. Maintain an information security program. Maintain a policy that addresses information security for employees. Implement strong access control measures. Use and regularly update anti-virus software or programs. Develop and maintain secure systems and applications. Restrict access to cardholder data by business need-to-know. Implement strong access control measures. Restrict physical access to cardholder data. Track and monitor all access to network resources and cardholder data. Regularly test security systems and processes. Maintain a vulnerability management program.

And a fine for non-compliance is a serious thing. Nasdaq has paid a $10 million civil monetary penalty and implemented a comprehensive information security program to settle charges brought by the Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) relating to two separate data breaches that occurred in 2013 and 2014. The SEC’s Order finds that Nasdaq failed to safeguard its systems and failed to implement policies and procedures reasonably designed to protect the security, confidentiality, and integrity of nonpublic information. Nasdaq also failed to promptly disclose the data breaches once they were discovered.

There are four levels of compliance, depending on the volume of transactions a company processes per year: Levels 1, 2, 3, and 4. Levels 1 and 2 are required for merchants accepting credit cards, while Levels 3 and 4 are designed for organizations that process, store or transmit cardholder data on behalf of another organization.

To be fully compliant, an organization must successfully complete and document a vulnerability scan, penetration test, and annual self-assessment of the PCI DSS compliance program. Although PCI DSS compliance is a requirement for all merchants, it’s not uncommon to find organizations that haven’t completed a self-assessment in years. For example, in recent years, e-commerce has become increasingly popular as more and more people shop online for items. However, many e-commerce companies ignore PCI DSS compliance, which could put customers at risk. Still, if a breach occurs, the e-commerce company will be liable. A good example of an e-commerce company that ignored PCI DSS compliance is Target. In 2013, Target lost the credit card information of 110 million customers to hackers who accessed their system through a third-party vendor. So, it’s better not to repeat their mistake.

While the cost of PCI compliance can be high, there are several strategies that businesses can use to minimize the cost.

One way to reduce the cost of PCI compliance is to use a self-assessment questionnaire. This questionnaire can be used to determine which parts of the PCI DSS apply to your business. By only implementing the required controls, you can save on both the upfront costs and the ongoing costs of PCI compliance. The questionnaire covers twelve key areas of PCI compliance, and businesses can use it to identify areas where they need to make improvements.

Another way to reduce the cost of PCI compliance is to outsource your payment processing. This can be done through a service provider or a payment gateway. By outsourcing your payment processing, you remove the burden of PCI compliance from your own internal IT staff.

And the last important thing we would like to discuss is tokenization. In the context of PCI compliance, tokenization can be used to store credit card numbers in a secure way. It replaces the sensitive data with a random string of characters, called a token, which has no value outside of the system. This makes it much more difficult for malicious actors to access credit card numbers. It’s common for third-party payment services to use tokenization to store credit card numbers in a database. Whenever a credit card is needed for any transaction, the tokenized value is used. The tokenized value can be stored in the database, or it can be stored in a file on the server. The implementation of tokenization varies depending on the third-party payment service provider and the type of database that is being used.

So, to conclude, PCI compliance can be costly and time-consuming, but it is an important part of protecting your customers’ credit card data. Organizations that fail to comply with the PCI security standards can be fined and may even lose their ability to process credit card payments. You definitely don’t need such problems.
