An AI chatbot can answer a customer’s question at 11 p.m., point a shopper to the right product and leave a complicated request for you to pick up in the morning. Choosing one is harder than it should be. Several of the best-known tools were designed for support departments with a dozen agents, and pricing models vary so much (per seat, per contact, per resolution, per message) that two tools with the same headline price can end up costing very different amounts.
We looked at seven platforms small business owners ask about most often. Pricing was checked in September 2026.
Quick Comparison
| Platform | Best for | Starting price | How AI is billed |
| Duki | Small businesses that want AI chat, site search and customer insights in one tool | $25/month per chatbot | $0.25 per chat message |
| Intercom Fin | Established support teams | $29 per seat/month | $0.99 per resolution |
| Tidio | Online stores that want live chat with some AI | Free; paid from $29/month | Lyro add-on from $39 for 50 AI conversations |
| Chatbase | DIY builders who want to choose the AI model | Free; paid from $40/month | Message credits (500 on the $40 plan) |
| Crisp | Small teams that want a shared inbox | Free; paid from $45/month | AI credits included, then pay as you go |
| ManyChat | Instagram-first businesses | Free; paid from $14/month | AI from the $29 Pro plan, priced by contacts |
| HubSpot | Businesses already running on HubSpot CRM | Free rule-based bot | AI agent on Enterprise tiers only |
What We Looked For
Our main question was how much of the job each tool does before you have to step in, and what that costs. In practice, that meant checking the following for every platform:
- Does it answer from your own website and documents, and admit when it doesn’t know?
- Does it tell you what customers ask, including the questions it couldn’t answer?
- Are AI, analytics, site search and extra languages in the entry plan, or held back for a higher tier?
- Will the bill stay predictable if traffic suddenly jumps?
- Can you install it yourself on WordPress, Shopify or Wix?
- Can a customer reach a person without a fight?
1. Duki: Best Overall For Small Businesses
Duki trains on your web pages, FAQs and files, answers only from that material and links to the source it used. You can set it up for sales, support or appointment booking, or let one bot handle all three. Where it pulls ahead of the rest of this list is in what it reports back to you.
Customer Insights
Every question the bot can’t answer lands in a Knowledge Gap report. AI Insights ranks the topics customers raise most, and each conversation is tagged as sales, support, booking or general. Picture a landscaping company that sees a dozen visitors in October asking about snow removal. That’s a service page to write, and maybe a new line of business. Few small businesses have any other way to collect that kind of information.
What The Entry Plan Includes
The $25 plan isn’t a stripped-down version of the product. It comes with:
- The chat widget and an AI Search Bar, both running on the same knowledge base
- Lead capture and smart pop-up forms
- WhatsApp, Instagram and Facebook, with consistent answers on each
- Multiple languages, including Hebrew and Arabic with right-to-left support
- Handoff to a person, plus satisfaction ratings on answers
- Connections to HubSpot, Salesforce, Zapier and Make
It Can Also Take Action
Hooked up to your other tools, Duki can book an appointment, check an order’s status once the customer is verified, add items to a shopping cart and open or look up a support ticket. These actions run through Zapier MCP, and you pay for each one only when it happens.
Pricing and Setup
Duki costs $25 per chatbot per month plus $0.25 per chat message. WhatsApp messages are billed at $0.05 instead of the chat rate, AI actions at $0.03 each, and crawling your site at $0.02 per page. There are no seats, setup fees or contracts, and a site with 300 chat messages a month can expect to pay about $100. Until December 31, 2026, Home Business Magazine readers get a free first month with the code HBMFREE, covering one chatbot or agent and 100 messages.
Installing it means pasting a single script tag into your site. It runs on WordPress, Shopify, Wix, Squarespace, Weebly, GoDaddy, Hostinger and Joomla.
One Duki customer reported 46% more sales inquiries within three months of launch. BERMAD, a water control valve manufacturer, calls the answers “accurate, reliable, and detailed.”
The one caveat is that per-message pricing works best for small and mid-sized sites. If you expect thousands of chats a month, compare it with a flat-rate plan.
2. Intercom Fin: Best For Established Support Teams
Intercom is a complete customer service platform, and Fin, its AI agent, is one of the most capable on the market for support questions. Its reporting is strong too, with AI-generated topic insights, reports on questions Fin couldn’t resolve and suggestions for help articles to write.
For a small business, the problem with Intercom is its pricing model. It charges $29 to $132 per seat per month on annual billing, while Fin adds $0.99 per resolved conversation. A solo owner pays at least $29 monthly, plus usage fees. Its inboxes, tickets, and workflows may also be more complex than a small team needs.
If you have a support team handling a high volume of tickets, Intercom deserves a close look. A one- or two-person business will likely pay for capacity it never uses.
3. Tidio: Best For Online Stores That Want Live Chat First
Tidio started as a live chat tool and is popular with online stores. It has a free plan and a quick setup, and its AI agent, Lyro, answers from your FAQs. Lyro’s analytics show resolution rates and list the questions it failed to answer.
Lyro is sold separately, though. Paid plans cost $29 (Starter) or $59 (Growth) a month, and Lyro adds at least $39 a month for 50 AI conversations. Removing Tidio’s branding costs another $20 a month on the lower plans, and the next plan up from Growth is $749. Tidio suits shops where people answer most chats and AI helps at the edges.
4. Chatbase: Best For DIY Builders Who Want Model Choice
Of the tools here, Chatbase works most like Duki. You train an AI agent on your documents and website, then place it on your site, WhatsApp, Instagram or Messenger. It connects to Shopify, Zapier and HubSpot, and it lets you choose which AI model writes the answers.
That choice has a cost. Plans start at $40 a month for 500 message credits and reach $150 for 4,000, but premium models use two to five credits per reply, so a stronger model means fewer answers for the same budget. An AI chatbot with removed Chatbase branding costs $99 a month, and each extra agent is $25 a month.
Chatbase tracks chat volume, topics and sentiment, with topics and sentiment limited to paid plans. There’s no dedicated report of unanswered questions and no AI search bar for your site. It fits owners who like to tinker and want to try different AI models.
5. Crisp: Best For Small Teams That Want a Shared Inbox
Crisp puts live chat, email and social messages into one shared inbox, with an AI agent named Hugo. Hugo’s analytics show how conversations flow, how often they escalate to a person and which topics come up most, and it can suggest additions to your knowledge base.
Plans start at $45 a month per workspace with a small AI credit included. Beyond that, Hugo runs about $0.05 to $0.10 per conversation. The limitation is that multilingual AI and site search only come with the Plus plan at $295 a month, a big step for a small team serving customers in more than one language.
6. ManyChat: Best For Instagram-First Businesses
ManyChat is built for Instagram automation, such as replying to a comment with a DM or delivering a lead magnet, and it also covers Messenger, WhatsApp, Telegram and website chat. Pricing starts at $14 a month and rises with your number of active contacts, so a post that goes viral can trigger overage fees. AI chatbot replies begin on the $29 Pro plan and draw on a knowledge base you paste in by hand. It fits businesses whose sales start in Instagram DMs rather than on their website.
7. HubSpot: Best If You Already Run On HubSpot CRM
If your contacts already live in HubSpot, its free chatbot builder can qualify leads, book meetings and route chats using flows you design. Those flows are scripted rather than AI-driven. HubSpot’s AI customer agent requires an Enterprise plan, starting at about $1,500 a month with a 10-seat minimum plus usage credits and an onboarding fee, which puts it out of reach for most small businesses.
Customer Insights Compared
Knowing what customers ask can be worth as much as answering them. Here’s what each tool reports.
| Platform | Shows unanswered questions | Topic or intent analysis | Included on the entry plan? |
| Duki | Yes (Knowledge Gap Detection) | Yes (AI Insights and intent tagging) | Yes |
| Intercom Fin | Yes | Yes | Requires paid seats plus Fin |
| Tidio | Yes (in Lyro analytics) | Resolution and satisfaction stats | Requires the Lyro add-on |
| Chatbase | No dedicated report | Topics and sentiment | Paid plans only |
| Crisp | Knowledge suggestions | Topic volume and escalations | AI credits limited below Plus |
| ManyChat | Not a focus | Campaign and flow stats | Varies |
| HubSpot | Not in the free bot | CRM reporting | AI insights on higher tiers |
The Verdict
Intercom suits companies with a real support team, and ManyChat suits businesses that sell through Instagram. If you already pay for HubSpot, its free bot is worth switching on.
For a typical small business, Duki packs the most into one plan: AI answers from your own content, site search, social channels, several languages and the most complete customer insights of any entry plan in this comparison. It starts at $25 with no seats, and readers who sign up by the end of 2026 get the first month free with code HBMFREE. You can set it up at duki.ai.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is The Best AI Chatbot For a Small Business?
In this comparison, Duki is the best fit for most small businesses. It combines AI chat, site search, social channels and detailed customer insights in one plan with no seat fees. Intercom Fin is better for larger support teams, and ManyChat for Instagram-led businesses.
How Much Does an AI Chatbot Cost For a Small Business?
Entry prices run from free rule-based bots to $25–$45 a month for AI tools, before usage. The bigger difference is how AI is billed: per message (Duki), per resolution (Intercom Fin), per AI conversation (Tidio), by credits (Chatbase) or by contacts (ManyChat).
Can a Chatbot Show me What My Customers Are Asking?
Some can. Duki, Intercom and Tidio list the questions their AI couldn’t answer, and Duki also groups conversations by topic and intent, so you can see which pages or FAQs to add.
Do I Need a Developer To Add an AI Chatbot To My Website?
Usually not. Duki, Tidio, Chatbase and Crisp install with a short code snippet or a site-builder plugin.
What’s The Difference Between Live Chat and an AI Chatbot?
Live chat connects visitors to a person on your team. An AI chatbot answers on its own, day or night, and hands the conversation to a person when needed. Many tools, including Duki, Tidio and Crisp, do both.
