An Insider’s Look into the World of High-End Watch Collecting

Home Business Magazine Online

High-end watch collecting is a fascinating and exclusive world that combines art, craftsmanship, history, and investment. It is a pursuit that attracts a diverse group of enthusiasts, from seasoned collectors to newcomers drawn by the allure of these miniature mechanical marvels.

The Allure of High-End Watches

High-end watches are more than mere timekeeping devices; they are works of art, crafted with the utmost precision and care. Brands like Rolex, Patek Philippe, and Audemars Piguet have become synonymous with luxury and status. Their timepieces are not only fashion statements but also investments, often appreciating in value over time.

Craftsmanship and History

The craftsmanship that goes into making these watches is unparalleled. Watchmakers spend years, sometimes decades, perfecting their craft. Each component is meticulously designed and assembled, resulting in a product that is both beautiful and functional. Collectors appreciate the history behind each brand and model, which adds an emotional value to their collections.

The Collector’s Journey

Starting Out

For those new to the hobby, the world of high-end watch collecting can seem intimidating. However, many collectors start by purchasing a single piece that holds personal significance. This initial purchase often sparks a deeper interest in horology, the study of timekeeping.

Building a Collection

As collectors become more knowledgeable, they often develop a strategy for building their collections. Some focus on a particular brand or historical period, while others may seek out rare or limited-edition models. The thrill of the hunt for the perfect piece is a significant part of the appeal.

The Role of Auctions and Dealers

Auctions play a crucial role in the world of high-end watch collecting. They are not only a source for rare and vintage pieces but also a barometer for the market’s health. Dealers, on the other hand, offer a more accessible avenue for collectors, providing expert advice and a curated selection of watches.

In the heart of the UK’s capital, The Watch Exchange London stands as a beacon for high-end watch enthusiasts. Buying an exquisite collection of luxury timepieces, it has become a pivotal player in the market, catering to both seasoned collectors and those new to the hobby.

Investment and Value

Watches as an Asset Class

High-end watches have emerged as a viable asset class. Certain models, especially limited editions or pieces with historical significance, have shown remarkable appreciation over the years. This potential for financial gain adds an exciting dimension to the hobby.

Market Trends

Understanding market trends is crucial for collectors who view their watches as investments. Factors such as brand legacy, rarity, and condition significantly impact a watch’s value. Enthusiasts keenly follow auction results and market analyses to stay informed.

The Social Aspect of Collecting

Communities and Clubs

Collecting high-end watches is not just about acquiring timepieces; it’s also about being part of a community. Clubs and online forums offer collectors the opportunity to share their passion, exchange knowledge, and make connections with like-minded individuals.

Events and Gatherings

Events like watch fairs and brand exhibitions are highlights for collectors. These gatherings offer a chance to see new releases, attend workshops, and network with industry professionals.

The Future of High-End Watch Collecting

Technological Advancements

The watch industry continuously evolves, with brands constantly innovating and incorporating new technologies. Collectors are often on the lookout for groundbreaking designs and mechanical advancements.

Sustainability and Ethics

The growing emphasis on sustainability and ethical practices in manufacturing is also influencing collectors’ choices. Brands that prioritize environmental responsibility and ethical sourcing are gaining favour.

Conclusion

High-end watch collecting is a multifaceted hobby that combines passion, knowledge, and investment. Whether driven by a love for craftsmanship, a desire for a tangible asset, or the joy of being part of a community, collectors find immense satisfaction in this unique world. As the industry evolves, so too will the nature of collecting, promising an exciting future for enthusiasts around the globe.

Diversifying Portfolios: Exploring Alternative Real Estate Investment Strategies

Home Business Magazine Online

In the ever-evolving landscape of investment, real estate continues to stand as a pillar of strength and potential. However, beyond the traditional pathways of property ownership and rental income, there exists a realm of alternative real estate investment options. These alternatives offer unique opportunities and diversification strategies for investors looking to broaden their portfolios beyond the conventional. In this article, we delve into the various forms of alternative real estate investments — from REITs to crowd-funded projects and beyond — unveiling their potential benefits and how they differ from standard real estate investments. Whether you’re a seasoned investor or a novice in the realm of real estate, understanding these investment alternatives can be a game-changer in maximizing your portfolio’s performance and resilience.

Accessibility & Diversity

Real estate investment platforms have revolutionized the way investors engage with the property market. These digital platforms offer an array of options, making it easier for both seasoned and novice investors to access real estate opportunities. From crowdfunding ventures that allow investment in large projects with smaller capital outlays to online REITs providing exposure to diverse property portfolios, these platforms democratize real estate investments. They open doors to markets and properties that were once out of reach for the average investor, offering a unique blend of accessibility and diversity.

Networking Opportunities

One of the main advantages of these platforms is their ability to connect investors with a broad spectrum of real estate options. Whether it’s commercial properties, residential buildings, or specialized real estate like storage units or medical facilities, these platforms provide comprehensive access. Investors can diversify their portfolios beyond traditional investments, reducing risk and potentially increasing returns. This diversification is crucial in today’s volatile market, providing a buffer against fluctuations in any single real estate segment.

Convenient Real Estate Investing

Ease of use is another significant benefit. These platforms streamline the investment process, offering user-friendly interfaces, detailed analytics, and educational resources. They simplify complex transactions, making due diligence and portfolio management more accessible to the average investor. This convenience is complemented by transparency, as most platforms provide clear information about fees, investment terms, and expected returns, enabling investors to make informed decisions.

High Returns & Lower Risk

The potential for higher returns is a compelling reason for many investors to explore real estate platforms. While traditional real estate investments often require significant capital and entail substantial management responsibilities, these platforms often offer more flexible and less capital-intensive options. Through pooled investments, individuals can participate in larger, potentially more lucrative projects, sharing both the risks and the rewards.

Conclusion

In summary, real estate investment platforms have transformed the landscape of property investing. They provide accessibility, diversity, convenience, and the potential for attractive returns. As the real estate market continues to evolve, these platforms will likely play an increasingly vital role, offering innovative ways for investors to grow their portfolios and achieve their financial goals.

Google is testing its Gemini AI model in Search

Google today announced Gemini, a multimodal large language model, and confirmed the AI model will be added to Search and Ads next year.

Gemini in Search. Gemini will become available in Search, Ads and other Google products in the coming months. Meanwhile, Google Search is already testing Gemini, which has reduced the latency of Search Generative Experience responses by 40% for English in the U.S. and led to other unspecified quality improvements, Google said.

How will Gemini change Search? Alphabet CEO Sundar Pichai and DeepMind’s Demis Hassabis were asked this by Platformer. As usual, Google kept it vague, and mostly talked about SGE – not Search as a whole, which could be telling:

You’re now saying that Gemini will come to search next year. How do you see it changing the search experience?

Pichai: We’re already experimenting with it in the search generative experience, and as we are experimenting with it, it’s driving improvements across the board. We think about Gemini as foundational — it will work across all our products. Search is no different.

One of the things search has been pushing hard on is multimodality in general. But today they have had to do all the hard work of making search multimodal. Gemini as a foundational model gives them that capability [natively], so I think that’s an area where they will innovate.

Do you think over the medium term, Gemini in search increases the number of times that you get the information you need from the results page without having to visit a website?

Pichai: Our fundamental vision is that people come to search to experience the richness and the diversity of the web and the content ecosystem. So even though with search generative experience we can expand what we do, we’re actually designing the product in a. way so that people can go explore. And I think that’s what users want. I view it as a fundamental value proposition of search, so that’d be part of our goal as we evolve the product.

Google unveils Gemini, Platformer

What is Google Gemini. Officially known as Gemini 1.0, it is a large language model that can work with all types of information – text, images, audio, video or code. Gemini brings Google competitively closer to OpenAI’s GPT model. Three “sizes” of Gemini were announced:

  • Ultra, for highly complex tasks.
  • Pro, Google’s “highest performing model” for a broad range of tasks.
  • Nano, for on-device tasks (i.e., Android phones like Pixel).

Gemini in Bard. Google Bard now is powered by a “fine-tuned version” of Gemini Pro. This gives Bard more advanced reasoning, planning and understanding, Google said. Calling this Bard’s “biggest upgrade” since launch, it is now available in English in more than 170 countries, with plans to expand further in “the near future.”

Bard Advanced, a new version powered by Gemini Ultra, will also debut early next year, Google said. It’s unclear how much Bard Advanced will cost, if anything.

Google DeepMind also shared a report that found Gemini outperformed GPT-3.5 for six of eight industry benchmarks. But OpenAI has offered GPT-4 since March.

Why we care. Although Gemini is only being tested in Search, Google has confirmed it will be part of the Google Search experience soon. Also, if you’ve been using ChatGPT for any of your day-to-day tasks, you may want to check out the upgraded Bard to see whether Bard matches or outperforms the free version of ChatGPT, powered by GPT-3.5.

Google advertisers can now opt out of Search Network

Google is allowing advertisers to opt out of the Search Network.

This decision comes in the wake of an Adalytics report claiming that Google search ads appeared on inappropriate non-Google websites through the search partner sites, creating potential risks for brand safety.

The flagged websites referenced in the research contain pornographic, sanctioned and pirated content.

Although Google refuted the claims, it acknowledged the need for improvements and customer satisfaction. This led to the introduction of the ability to exclude search partners from all campaign types.

Why we care. Ads appearing alongside inappropriate content can damage a brand’s reputation. Additionally, the audience consuming such content is unlikely your target audience, which results in inefficient use of advertising budget, time and resources.

New capabilities. Advertisers can temporarily exclude all campaign types, including Performance Max and app campaigns, from search partner sites. Media buyers reportedly have until March 1, 2024 to opt out PMax campaigns.

Adalytics claims. The Adalytics report, published last week, claimed that an unnamed Fortune 500 company was left “surprised” after learning that its ads were being served on “many” non-Google websites. Such websites included Breitbart.com – a site the company had specifically added to its account-level domain exclusion list (i.e. blocklist) several years beforehand. An Adalytics researcher commented:

  • “This raises the possibility that ads were served on websites and publishers despite the brand’s deliberate efforts to achieve brand safety and exercise control over their media investments.”

Dan Taylor, Vice President, Global Ads at Google, denied the claims in the report, calling them “wildly exaggerated” last week.

What Google is saying. A Google spokesperson told Adweek:

  • “Our priority is our partners, and we listen closely to their feedback, which is why we are temporarily offering a new option to opt out.”
  • “Adalytics made wildly exaggerated claims by trying to generate as many negative ad placements as they could, but our own analysis found that those placements rarely occurred before they intentionally triggered them.”
  • “Though we take enormous issue with Adalytics’ methodology and conclusions, we always look to improve our products to meet our partners’ needs.”

Search Engine Land contacted Google for further comment. We’ll update the story if we receive a reply.

6 Ways Starting and Scaling a Company Is Like Dating

Home Business Magazine Online

When looking for resources to help build and scale startups, we often turn to books and podcasts for motivation and advice. Rarely do we examine our personal relationships as a source of insight into how we might succeed in business. In fact, we often work to actively separate our personal lives from our work lives. However, building and scaling a successful business actually shares a lot of similarities with dating and maintaining a relationship. Startups are a labor of love, after all, so it only makes sense that we should look to love for inspiration.

Both businesses and personal relationships are ultimately about working closely with other people to achieve common goals. Every entrepreneur or business owner can attest that they put their heart and soul into their business and experience great joy and exhilaration, but those achievements come as a result of moments of hardship, tough decisions and compromises. In today’s highly competitive world, relationships form the bedrock of business success, creating a strong foundation for collaboration and innovation. Whether it’s with customers, suppliers, employees, or industry peers, nurturing meaningful connections creates ongoing value that can lead to sustained growth and can multiply the joy many times over by sharing it with others.

Here are five important ways that starting and scaling a company is similar to dating:

1. It Requires Good Communication

Collaboration, respect, and communication win the day, both in business and in our personal lives, particularly as we hit rough patches. As in personal relationships, conflicts occasionally arise in business, and emotions can run high at times. During these moments, it’s critical to take a step back and focus on the long-term goal. Rather than acting out of disappointment or resentment, it’s wise to evaluate what is really at stake and try to make informed, strategic decisions that are in the company’s best interest. This requires all parties involved to maintain a baseline of respect for one another and to communicate openly with the aim of doing what is best for the organization as a whole. Relationships are effective teachers in this regard, as they can only flourish when both parties know how to manage conflict in a respectful, productive, and collaborative manner. Even long-term, healthy relationships contain conflict: occasional disagreements are not a sign of dysfunction, but necessary steps toward genuine growth. Bringing this collaborative attitude into a business setting can help you distill valuable lessons from conflicts, turning them into an advantage rather than a detriment.

2. It Takes Dedication

Strong personal relationships do not happen automatically. Even when two people are naturally compatible, there’s no guarantee that the relationship will be successful—both people need to bring a distinct contribution to the table. Likewise, when it comes to business, having the right idea at the right time is not enough to create a thriving company. In both personal and business relationships, success requires commitment to a compelling vision, and commitment requires goal-setting and hard work towards achieving those goals. Being able to humble yourself and think about what will be best for the company is critical for creating a vision that is inspiring and compelling to others. While it can be easy to lose track of long-term goals in the day-to-day minutiae of work, remembering and staying connected to the company’s broader mission can provide you with a sense of purpose that will keep you motivated during difficult times.

3. It Requires You to Be Selective

To succeed in business, the team you choose is of paramount importance. Investing a significant amount of time and effort into people who are not fully committed to the company’s success will ultimately end up creating more work for you down the road. Smart singles know how to spot red flags quickly, and only pursue dates that they feel have real long-term potential. This ability to read people and understand their intentions is also an essential ingredient in business success. Being selective requires you to judge people by their actions rather than their words and to prioritize everyday efforts over grand gestures. In business, as in a relationship, there will inevitably be peaks and valleys, and you want to ensure that you are working with people who will stay with you through all of it.

4. It Benefits from Self-Care

Most people are familiar with the truism that you can’t love somebody else if you don’t learn how to love yourself. The same logic applies to a startup: you can’t grow it in a healthy, sustainable way if you don’t know how to manage your personal growth. While it can often feel like there is always something else that you can or should be doing, it’s important to know how to step back from your work and give yourself time to relax and practice self-care. Just as going on a new date every night does not make you more likely to find the right person, pushing yourself at every waking moment does not make a great breakthrough more likely. The time you take to revitalize yourself and get back in touch with the reasons you started the business in the first palace will help you approach your work from a more rested, positive, and clear-headed perspective. This helps keep burnout at bay and allows you to be at your best during those decisive moments.

5. It’s a Journey, Not a Destination

Growth has no end point. If you’ve been in a long-term relationship, you know that, as much as we enjoy comfort, it’s also important to always be growing and learning together to keep things fresh and exciting. Similarly, in business, it’s critical to stay abreast of new trends and developments in technology to ensure that your company remains relevant and competitive for the long run. This process also involves a delicate balancing act, as you do not want to sacrifice what made your brand exciting and distinctive in the first place. Being able to stay true to what you love about your company while also changing and growing in response to the times takes commitment, self-reflection, and integrity—all of which are important qualities in relationships as well.

6. It Requires Putting Yourself Out There

As with dating, startups require you to take initiative. They take courage to begin and tenacity to build, which can be deeply fulfilling. What often goes underemphasized, however, is the fact that building a startup is also exciting—indeed, there are few things more enjoyable than working closely with others toward your vision and watching it come to fruition. Starting and scaling a company allows you to develop connections with a wide variety of people while simultaneously giving you a unique opportunity to discover new things about yourself.

Finally, there is no “perfect time” to get out and pursue that business idea. While the thought of starting can be intimidating (not unlike the thought of asking someone out), waiting too long puts you at risk of being left behind as the market progresses around you. Opportunities for success do not come out of nowhere but are created by the act of putting yourself out there and giving the world what you have to offer. Being adaptable and maintaining a growth mindset are essential assets, as they help you stay attuned to new developments and opportunities that arise in the process of building your startup. This allows you to create your own luck rather than relying on external circumstances, which is the key to achieving long-term success.

The passion, excitement, personal growth, hard work, and commitment involved in nurturing a great relationship are paralleled in the journey of building a company, and the rewards are just as satisfying. Business is not just a matter of the mind, but the heart as well: taking inspiration from the other important relationships in your life can be a powerful way to define what success means to you, and to show you how you can make your dreams a reality.

Microsoft Bing adds new Deep Search generative AI feature

Microsoft today announced Deep Search – a new, optional generative AI feature meant to help searchers with complex questions that don’t have simple answers.

How it works. Deep Search is built on top of Bing’s web index and ranking system. It then uses GPT-4 to discern all the possible intents and variations behind the query and compute descriptions for each of them to create an “ideal set of results.”

After using a combination of querying techniques, Deep Search will surface results that typically wouldn’t appear in Search results.

In an example query Microsoft shared, it showed a user searching for [how do points systems work in japan], Deep Search might identify these other relevant search terms:

  • loyalty card programs Japan
  • best loyalty cards for travelers in Japan
  • comparison of loyalty programs by category Japan
  • redeeming loyalty cards in Japan
  • managing loyalty points with phone apps
  • “By doing this, Deep Search can find results that cover different aspects of my query, even if they don’t explicitly include the original keywords. Regular searches on Bing already consider millions of web pages for each search and Deep Search does ten times that to find results that are more informative and specific than the ones that rank higher in normal search,” MIcrosoft said.

What Deep Search looks like. Here’s a GIF Microsoft shared to illustrate how Deep Search works on Bing:

Microsoft Bing Deep Search

Deep Search results ranking. The biggest factor is how well a page matches Bing’s expanded description. A few other relevance and quality factors mentioned were:

  • How well the topic matches.
  • Whether it has an “appropriate level of detail.”
  • Whether the source is credible and trustworthy.
  • Freshness.
  • How popular the page is.

Wait times. Deep Search won’t load as quickly as regular search results. It may take Deep Search up to 30 seconds to complete, Microsoft said. This makes the feature sound dead on arrival – as most searchers likely won’t have that much patience.

Limited availability right now. Only “randomly selected small groups” of Bing’s global users will see Deep Search while it’s in testing, Microsoft said in a blog post.

Why we care. This is another AI-driven SERP feature that will compete and could steal clicks from organic listings. That said, it’s hard to tell exactly how it works without testing it out, which we haven’t been able to do yet. But any clicks it steals could help users complete their tasks more quickly, as user intent can be ambiguous for many queries.

What Microsoft is saying. Microsoft said it created Deep Search to provide “more relevant and comprehensive answers to the most complex search queries”:

  • “Deep Search is not meant for every query or every user. … Deep Search is not a replacement for Bing’s existing web search, but an enhancement that offers the option for a deeper and richer exploration of the web.”

Google Local Service Ads roll out impression share data

Google has rolled out impression share data for Local Service Ads (LSAs).

Impression share is the percentage of times your ad shows up compared to the total number of times it could potentially appear.

This data became available on LSAs in November, Ginny Marvin, Google Ads liaison officer, confirmed on X.

Why we care. Impression share is a key metric for assessing the visibility and effectiveness of an ad campaign, enabling marketers to better understand performance and optimize more efficiently.

First spotted. The impression share data for Google LSAs was first spotted by Google Ads expert, Ben Turner, who shared a screenshot of his findings on X:

ADS

As shown in the screenshot above, three new metrics can now be seen for Google LSA accounts:

  • Ad impressions: How often your ad showed up in search results within a chosen time frame
  • Top impression rate on Search: The percentage of your impressions displayed above unpaid results within a chosen timeframe.
  • Absolute top impression rate on Search: The percentage of your impressions that appear as the first ad in search results with a specific time range.

Commenting on the screenshot, Turner wrote:

  • “Seeing IS metrics in selected Google LSA accounts – could be useful. Metrics seem wildly different to an LSA ranking tool I briefly used. One of them must be off.”
  • “If you’re looking at anything other than November 2023 there is no data.”

Reactions. Digital marketing expert Anthony Higman commented that the rollout of impression share data could help improve the accuracy of reporting. He explained on X:

  • “[I] have been screaming for this. My whole thing since the intro of LSA is how can I accurately report on Google ads when LSA is in the mix and you have no idea how or when. I doubt this will actually help solve it but it’s a step in the right direction. Only took them 3 years.”
  • “Also what’s cool is that these are metrics I haven’t been able to see before. You can see a lot of data in LSA accounts from the account level if you are creative but haven’t been able to see positioning metrics before.”

Google expands video requirements for “Video mode” where video must be main content of the page

Google is expanding its video requirements where the video must be the main content of the page to show up as a video result in Google Search to also have that requirement with Google’s “Video mode” in search. Google said, “extending this change to search results in Video mode to better connect users with the video content they’re looking for.”

The change can take about a week to fully rollout but once it is done rolling out you should only see videos in Google Search and Video mode from pages that make their video the primary part of their content.

What changed. Google said it will only “show video thumbnails next to results on the main Google Search results page when the video is the main content of a page” and that it expanding this requirement for “video mode.”

Google explained “with this update, clicking a result in Video mode will only take users to a page where the video is the main content.”

What is video mode. The videos that show under the video tab are generally what is video mode. Google shared this illustration of video mode in the Google Search results:

Alphabet Inc.

Not primary video content. Google posted some examples of page types where the video is supplementary to the textual content, and not the primary focus of the page, they include:

  • A blog post where the video is complementary to the text rather than the primary content of the page
  • A product details page with a complementary video
  • A video category page that lists multiple videos of equal prominence

Search Console changes. Google said this change may have an impact on your video reports within Google Search Console. “You’ll see the impact of this change in your Search Console video indexing report,” Google wrote. Videos that aren’t the main content of the page will appear as “No video indexed” in Search Console.

“Since these videos will no longer be shown in Video mode, you can expect to see a decrease in the number of pages with indexed videos,” Google added. This decrease will also appear in the number of video impressions in the performance report, video indexing report, and the video rich results report in Google Search Console.

Google will also add a new reason to the report to explain why these videos are not indexed: “Video is not the main content of the page”, which simplifies the report by replacing the following issues:

  • Invalid video URL
  • Unsupported video format
  • Unknown video format
  • Inline data URLs cannot be used for video URLs
  • Video outside the viewport
  • Video too small
  • Video too tall

Why we care. If your pages have been ranking in video mode within Google Search, you’ll watch to watch the performance of those pages heading forward. This change also has implications for the video metrics you see reported in Search Console.
