3 steps to mastering the right indicators for lasting SEO results

“Skate to where the puck is going.”

Simple in theory, but difficult in practice.

If next year’s SEO results come from what you’re doing (or not doing) right now, then too many SEOs want to have their cake and eat it, too.

They want long-term success. But too often, they are seduced by short-term shortcuts to get there.

Here’s why obsessing over lagging indicators like “traffic” or “trials” is a mistake and how you can better predict future SEO success by focusing on inputs and leading indicators instead.

Why ‘traffic’ and ‘trials’ are terrible indicators of SEO progress

Traffic, trials, leads and sales are nice.

They’re great. Money in the bank.

Up-and-to-the-right charts only get SEOs promoted, not demoted, at the end of the day.

And yet, it’s this exact same mindset that often sabotages your long-term ROI.

It’s like driving to a new destination while keeping your eyes fixed firmly in the rearview mirror.

You’re so focused on the output (traffic) that you’re neglecting to focus on what actually drives future performance (the inputs).

Traffic, leads, demos, opt-ins, and sales are all lagging indicators. That means they’re a byproduct of previous work.

They’re the end result – like your weight on a scale – and not the input that actually drives your ideal future state (like calories eaten, sugar consumed, or miles walked).

And because they lag, it often means you’re looking at old data by the time it does “work.”

Dig deeper: SEO outcomes vs. SEO outputs: Understanding the difference

The added problem is that “traffic” or “sales” don’t just lag a few days or weeks behind publishing a new article, for instance, but more often by years.

Let me show you a simple example.

Nobody on the Internet needs an introduction to monday.com. They virtually own all of the digital “project management” space.

And yet, it still took them over two years (plus several failed attempts) to eventually dominate the most lucrative keyword in the space, “project management software.”

Monday - project management software

This shouldn’t be a surprise.

This same phenomenon is even more extreme for more “mortal” brands that most SEOs often work across.

So let’s bring this back down to Earth.

Take a new-ish app, coming out of beta, with some money in the bank but virtually zero organic search traffic.

That means little-to-no unbranded/nonbranded traffic and no topical authority. Google doesn’t even know this site exists at this point.

And yet, over time, the same up-and-to-the-right charts that get SEOs paid:

GA - Up and to the right pageviews

What does this mean?

Does it mean that the first year of SEO was a failure, but the second year was a success?

Nope.

Nothing at all changed. And that’s exactly why it ended up “miraculously working” after 12+ months.

Here’s why and how to replicate this same success on your own site.

You can predict SEO success by focusing on inputs, not outputs

No, you can’t guarantee SEO success. But you can 100% predict it

The caveat, however, is that you need to know where to focus.

And the answer, as we saw above, is not traffic or trials or demos booked.

Advanced Web Rankings CTR study shows that ~70-80% of people click on the top five results

In other words, only the top five ranking results are seeing the lagging indicators of traffic, leads and sales start to blow up their analytics.

SEO is a zero-sum game. Someone wins by someone else losing.

This means only a tiny, tiny fraction of the people publishing something will ever see meaningful results.

Now, this also means the inverse is true.

If you’re ranking in position 10, you might only see <1% of all potential traffic.

Bummer. Right?

Except, that’s OK! It’s a great sign.

Under the surface, your SEO campaign is working. The swells and currents under the surface are slowly starting to come together, all but guaranteeing that it’s only a matter of time until your traffic explodes.

And yet, this is also the exact point when most people get antsy, lose patience, get distracted by other vanity or lagging metrics, and kill the project dead in its tracks.

Herein lies the big catch-22 of SEO that most know but ignore:

  • You need a big site to rank for good keywords, yet…
  • You need to rank for good keywords to build a big site.
SEO catch-22

Step 1: Identify and capitalize on what’s already showing promise

The “beachhead principle” is a simple technique to help mid-size sites compete and eventually dominate ultra-competitive categories.

It helps you balance both short and long-term results simultaneously, setting the bar high to rank long-term on a lucrative pillar keyword or page while using your supporting pages to rank faster on less competitive variations or longer-tail concepts.

The secret is that there is no secret.

You need to identify where you might already have some existing topical authority or some progress and then try to expand on that ASAP.

For instance, when we acquired Wordable, we looked at which content pieces were already working to some degree.

We isolated for traffic from organic search only and then immediately noticed a straightforward pattern:

Wordable - Top ranking keywords

Some of the biggest traffic drivers in those early days were coming from articles around “Google Docs.”

The product is related to Google Docs, which is a good sign. Albeit, most of these topics and traffic are very “top of the funnel.” So, generally speaking, there is very little buying intent, but higher volumes and less competitive (read: easier to rank).

Awesome.

Now we have our beachhead.

Get the daily newsletter search marketers rely on.

<input type="hidden" name="utmCampaign" value="“>
<input type="hidden" name="utmSource" value="“>

<input type="hidden" name="pageLink" value="“>
<input type="hidden" name="ipAddress" value="“>

function getCookie(cname) {
let name = cname + “=”;
let decodedCookie = decodeURIComponent(document.cookie);
let ca = decodedCookie.split(‘;’);
for(let i = 0; i <ca.length; i++) {
let c = ca[i];
while (c.charAt(0) == ' ') {
c = c.substring(1);
}
if (c.indexOf(name) == 0) {
return c.substring(name.length, c.length);
}
}
return "";
}
document.getElementById('munchkinCookieInline').value = getCookie('_mkto_trk');

Step 2: Target the right keywords at the right time

If we need to build a big site before attempting to rank for the best stuff in our space, that means we need to get busy ranking on something. Anything!

You’re managing your payback period at this point. You need to get some quick wins and short-term ROI while balancing to deliver long-term ROI years in the future.

So first, we’ll double down on scaling the quality and quantity of content around our beachhead.

And then only later will we start targeting more competitive and commercial terms that will eventually deliver seven-to-eight-figure returns.

How do you know if you’re picking the right keywords at the right time? Look at time to rank.

If you publish a page that goes from “not indexed” to ranking number four within a week or two, you’re doing it right!

Target the right keywords at the right time

Easy peasy.

Now, extrapolate this same effect out over the course of another year, and that’s when you start seeing the lagging indicators finally kick in.

Chart showing continuous SEO results

This very simple yet practical approach drove a 360% monthly traffic increase in only a year.

Not bad!

GA traffic - YoY comparison

But it’s also not great.

It starts to put us on the map. However, it won’t drive the big ROI that will ultimately add another zero or two to our P&L.

So here’s how to take the next step.

Step 3: Drive long-term ROI with patience and process

Not indexed to the fourth position in about a week?

The last example is a best-case scenario involving years of SEO sniper experience.

So let’s look at another more common example.

You publish a piece of content. It ranks within positions 10 to 20 within a week or two. That’s excellent news!

Over a decade of experience across potentially thousands of sites at this point has proven to me that “no index” to page two within a few weeks will correlate highly with future top SERP rankings.

It just will take more time. So keep doubling down on the same process!

Here’s how this looks in practice.

Notice the ~six-month “wilderness” period in the yellow box below, where the page bounces around for a bit in obscurity.

Nobody sees it. No one (other than you and Google) even knows it exists.

Now, fast forward to current day, and the green box shows a consistent, sticky top 5 position.

Six-month SEO wilderness period

This is despite several SERP shakeups, like a proliferation of AI crap content, as well as algorithm updates, like helpful content.

The catch? It took a little over two years!

So, you need to continue trusting the process:

  • Focus on inputs rather than outputs.
  • Remain patient while the swells continue to form across the horizon.

Here’s a final example that shows this delicate balancing act.

The beachhead principle below is starting to bear fruit, with some smaller, less competitive queries starting to rank really well, while at the same time, we’re waiting for the bigger ones to catch up.

Beachhead results in SEO
  • The stuff in green is your less competitive, supporting posts or top-of-funnel stuff, starting to rank in the top five.
  • The stuff in yellow, more lucrative or even higher volume, is still just stuck outside the strike zone.

So, if you’re only looking at lagging indicators, the former looks like a “success” while the latter seems like a “failure.”

Except, as you’ve now seen, this is either misguided or simply incorrect.

The only true SEO success, measured in dolla’ dolla’ billz y’all, happens over years of consistently executing.

The ROI of SEO is a marathon that lasts years. This is the opposite of a few ephemeral sprints like referral or ad traffic, resulting in spikes of arbitrage that disappear almost as quickly as they originated.

Dig deeper: How long SEO takes to work

Your SEO is working – you just need to ignore ‘traffic’ and ‘trials’

You can and should go for quick SEO wins. You need them! They give you confidence and, better yet, your bosses or clients peace of mind that you know what you’re doing.

But stop obsessing over traffic and trials because those are lagging indicators, only confirming what you should have known over a year ago before setting down that path.

Instead, focus more on the inputs and leading indicators that help you better predict when your campaigns are showing promise.

To the untrained eye, it might look like failure initially.

But the real failure only happens when you pull the plug too early, before all those lagging indicators finally reveal themselves.

How to Enhance the Productivity of Your Finance Team

Home Business Magazine Online

There are many ways to ensure that your finance team is working to its maximum potential and as productively as possible for your business.

Most of these ways come from the use of spend management software that includes a great amount of automation.

One of the biggest ways to boost productivity alongside spend management software is through the use of virtual corporate cards.

So, how can these cards increase productivity within your finance team and the overall running of a business?

Eliminating manual tasks

Allowing more employees to use virtual corporate cards helps greatly with automating manual and repetitive tasks.

These tasks can be tedious for finance teams. Utilizing virtual corporate cards can free up this time, so they can work on other strategic tasks that uphold a smooth-running business.

A finance team can spend hours collecting and matching invoices, so automating receipt collection can massively help to create a more efficient process.

It may be possible to use an invoice automation tool that collects receipts from a variety of different formats to match them with the correct transactions, saving a great deal of time and effort for your finance team.

What about reimbursements?

Following on from receipt collection, reimbursing employees is another task that can be removed from the hands of your finance team, especially when it comes to creating expense reports.

These can become especially tedious, as it takes time to constantly ask employees to hand in these reports on time.

Instead of having to pay employees out of pocket, virtual cards can be used for expenses, including business trips.

With a virtual card, managers can set an amount that an employee can spend, along with various other limits, following a certain policy.

This way, you can be certain that employees are spending wisely, whilst avoiding any unnecessary, large costs that could detrimentally affect the running of your business.

Better visibility and reconciliation

The use of virtual cards within a business establishes clear categories of payments, whilst being able to search payments by vendor too.

Virtual cards don’t only provide clear visibility, but a greater level of overall business insight due to digitalized payments.

When digitalized, payments become more accessible, so can be more easily analyzed to collect insights into how your business is spending and how it could be spending more effectively.

This saves time when it comes to analyzing these reports, becoming a much quicker process for your business’s finance team.

Purchase approvals

Finance teams can also save time when it comes to approval requests and having to chase someone for misuse of funds.

Businesses can lessen expense violations by setting up purchase approvals before all transactions, so approval will be needed from a manager.

Employees are less likely to violate rules if they know every expense is visible to their manager, meaning less labor is needed from finance teams to correct financial errors.

Final thoughts

With various ways to enhance the productivity of your finance team, utilizing virtual corporate cards can save large amounts of time to spend on other important tasks.

This ensures that no business element is neglected, making for an overall more efficiently run business.

LinkedIn to give Collaborative Articles more reach in search

artificial intelligence

LinkedIn is giving users more incentives to contribute to Collaborative Articles, promising greater visibility in search, feeds and notifications, the company announced today.

More visibility. LinkedIn plans to include more Collaborative Articles when people search for specific problems or topics. So if you’ve contributed to a Collaborative Article, this increases the odds your answer could be featured in LinkedIn’s search results.

Other ways LinkedIn is increasing visibility for Collaborative Article contributors:

  • People outside your network may be exposed to your contribution, not just people you are already connected to.
  • LinkedIn may also notify members “who would benefit” from your expertise.

Why we care. Contributing to Collaborative Articles provides a way to increase your visibility and your LinkedIn network and possibly even get leads. However, the format still is imperfect and needs more human editorial oversight.

Smart SEO play. LinkedIn Collaborative articles have been a smart and effective SEO play for LinkedIn so far. Just look at this growth (as shared on LinkedIn by Olga Andrienko, VP of brand marketing at Semrush):

Director at Candour

But. It’s also resulting in a lot of SEO misinformation.

  • “It’s churning out content about SEO talking about bounce rate, toxic links, and how you need to spend hours agnosing over meta descriptions. Just drowning in half-truths and misinformation. SEO is going to be particularly interesting in the next few years!” Mark Williams-Cook, Director at Candour, wrote on LinkedIn.

What else is changing. LinkedIn announced multiple additional updates to Collaborative Articles:

  • Top Community Voice badges: Badges for a skill will appear next to your contributions to an article, no longer just on your profile.
  • New layout: LinkedIn is putting a greater focus on member contributions instead of AI-generated text.
  • All reactions available: Plus, you can see who has reacted to your contributions.
  • Follow: People can now follow you directly from your contributions.
  • Top Contributor section: Noteworthy contributors will be featured at the top of an article (most likely based on reactions).
  • Cross-article linking: Internal links are being added to articles to make it easier to discover and read more articles.
  • And more: LinkedIn is promising better quality and depth for articles; better algorithmic recommendations based on your posts/articles/comments; that filling in your Top Skills section will “explicitly pick the skills you want to contribute to”; and a refresh of linkedin.com/advice that makes it easier to find and contribute to articles.

Google October 2023 spam update done rolling out

Google has confirmed that the October 2023 link spam update is now finished rolling out. The update took 15 days and 12 hours to roll out, starting on October 4, 2023, and ending on October 10, 2023. Google has posted it was completed today, October 10.

What was this spam update. Google said the October 2023 spam update “aims to clean up several types of spam that our community members reported in Turkish, Vietnamese, Indonesian, Hindi, Chinese, and other languages.”

Google added that update should “reduce the visible spam in search results, particularly when it comes to cloaking, hacked, auto-generated, and scraped spam.”

Google later added on X, “We’ve done work to especially improve coverage in some languages, as our blog post explained. So yes, those language likely will see bigger and more helpful change. But the improvements are not limited to those languages.”

Impact. It will be hard to figure out the exact impact of this update, since Google decided to release the October 2023 core update at the same time and complete it just several hours ago. But I do believe we saw a nice number of spam sites get targeted in a big way around October 9, 2023.

Previous updates. Before this, the most recent confirmed Google spam update was the October 2022 spam update and the  December 2022 link spam update. Before that was the  November 2021 spam update. Google also released a two-part Spam Update – on June 23 and June 28 in 2021, as well as the July 2021 link spam update.

Why we care. If you notice changes to your rankings over the next few weeks and your site is not primarily English, although, it may target English results, it may be related to this. This update specifically targets cloaking, hacked, auto-generated, and scraped spam.

Exploring programmatic SEO: Real-world examples and insights

With the rise of AI content to help make programmatically generated content more SEO-friendly, many publishers and businesses are considering investing in programmatic SEO.

In this article, I’ll explore specific programmatic SEO examples and how they rank in search.

Types of programmatic SEO

If you’ve researched the topic, you’ve likely come across some of the most popular examples of programmatic SEO: Zapier, Nomad List, or travel review sites.

To drive traffic with programmatic SEO (PSEO), you’ll want to find content that maps to the right search queries, fits your specific site and that your ideal visitors and prospects will find valuable.

You may already have data you can convert to various types of PSEO pages or quickly compile data that maps to a specific content type here.

In either case, being aware of some of these examples and general categories of programmatic SEO may spark some ideas that fit your company’s site.

1. Travel and geography-based pages

The best-known, highly valuable programmatic SEO page type is travel or geography-based sites like Yelp, Tripadvisor and Booking.com.

The premise is simple: the site will have a database with information about things like:

  • Restaurants.
  • Small businesses.
  • Hotels.
  • Entertainment options.

Here’s an example of a search result for “things to do in Boothbay Harbor:”

Things to do in Boothbay Harbor

Not surprisingly, Tripadvisor (which purchased Viator, a site dedicated to experience packages) ranks first.

This page has a mix of links to collections of specific categories of things to do and specific things to do with brief descriptions (and links to the activity page):

Tripadvisor - things to do in Boothbay Harbor

Again, Tripadvisor ranks for several competitive variations of this type of query:

Tripadvisor - "Things to do in" queries

Worth noting, though, is that Tripadvisor is an authoritative domain. Most sites ranking for the same query have unique lists with content written about the topic, not programmatically generated pages.

If you have collections of review content on your site, these pages could be useful, but you need to do proper keyword research to ensure that the pages you’d generate will be well-positioned to rank on your site for the targeted query.

These don’t always need to be “best” searches either. If you have a specific feature for a store or location that people find valuable (i.e., stores with free wifi in X area, hotels that allow dogs in Y area, etc.), that can also trigger these types of pages.

2. Template collection pages

Another common type of programmatic SEO content are collections of different types of templates. This is often a good fit for a B2B site that’s looking for PSEO ideas or a site aimed at creators, as you can build collections of things like:

  • Video templates.
  • Social media templates or filters.
  • Templates for slide decks, Excel or Google Docs, etc.

Canva is often referenced as a great example of this. If we look at the search query “Google slides timeline template,” we can see another:

"Google slides timeline template"

The first result is from SlidesGo.com, which offers a bunch of templates for download:

SlidesGo.com - Templates

This page also offers some custom content “below the fold” specific to the topic:

Home Business
Tips specific to presenting timeline graphics may be more useful here.

And the domain generally ranks for a variety of different template-related keywords:

Template-related keywords

Templates related to your core topic area (or a template-focused site) with the right level of competition for your site could be an interesting approach, particularly if you can generate some copy that’s helpful and unique to the page.

3. X vs. Y

Even if you’re not an affiliate or product review site, “X vs. Y” content comparing products or software where you have a database of information is a good candidate for generating a page type programmatically.

Here is a search for a comparison of two dog brushes Hertzko vs. Furminator:

“X vs. Y” content

And Slant.co, which generates a lot of these product comparison pages, ranks first.

It also ranks for a variety of “vs.” queries around things like apps, products, and other solutions:

Slant.co "vs. queries"

What you would need to replicate these would be:

  • A spreadsheet with many data points surrounding a set of products or apps.
  • A unique blurb of “analysis” summarizing the differences and similarities between the two products or apps. (This would be very easy to set up with prompts to generate AI content.)
  • A template for the comparison pages.

Of note here also is that, according to Ahrefs, the slant.co domain has seen a steady decline in traffic since late 2020 (the site had been ranking for a very wide mix of topics).

4. Best X for Y

Similarly, if you have ratings around a specific product or type of software or app, generating pages based on the category of product / game is another approach, as we see here with the Metacritic result  for “best games for PS5”:

Metacritic

While this isn’t the top ranking, you can see they have rankings secured for a variety of similar queries just by returning an index page of games for a specific function:

Best X for Y queries

If your rating system is hard-won and valuable for searchers, these types of pages can be relatively “thin” but still valuable to searchers.

5. Database-driven pages

If you have a database or spreadsheet with information on various stores, products, etc., using that to programmatically generate pages can be highly effective, particularly in an authoritative domain.

This is another example of a highly trusted domain, the official American Kennel Club website, which has several dog breed pages with a specific template and a lot of information about those breeds populated.

In this instance, they rank first for the breed Affenpinscher:

Database-driven pages

Below, you can see the formatting they use across breed pages (with the date for weight, height, life expectancy, etc., populated on the main page and tabbed content):

Dog breed pages - additional content

Within this /dog-breeds/ section, they rank extremely high for a variety of terms:

Dog breeds - keywords

Suppose you have an authoritative domain and are looking to scale content creation.

In that case, you can pair specific data points (e.g., height or weight) with some custom content around breed characteristics to generate pages (rather than creating long-form breed guides from scratch one by one).

X is launching two new tiers of Premium subscription

Elon Musk has announced that two new tiers of X Premium subscriptions will be launching soon.

One of the options will cost less than the current $8 per month plan but will not have a reduction in ads, while the other will be more expensive and will block all ads.

The exact costs of each tier are yet to be confirmed.

Why we care. This move could potentially have a significant impact on advertisers who invest ad spend in X, depending on the uptake of the zero-ad subscription.

Why now. Since Musk took-over X last year, ad revenue has dropped 59% and the company has been eagerly exploring new ways to generate revenue.

What X is saying. Musk revealed last month that he was planning to make X a paid-for platform for all users. During a conversation with Israeli Prime Minister, Benjamin Netanyahu, he claimed this was the most effective way to tackle the issue of rampant bot activity. He said:

  • “The single most important reason that we’re moving to having a small monthly payment for use of the X system is that it’s the only way I can think of to combat vast armies of bots.”
  • “Because a bot costs a fraction of a penny, or a tenth of a penny, but if somebody even has to pay a few dollars or something, some minor amount, the effective cost of bots is very high, and then you also have to get a new payment method every time you have a new bot.”
  • “We’re actually going to come out with lower tier pricing. We want it to be just a small amount of money [and] in my view, this is actually the only defense against vast armies of bots.”

Laurastar Dry Microfine Steam (DMS) purifies textiles naturally without the use of chemical products.

What is Laurastar Dry Microfine Steam (DMS)?

The Laurastar Dry Microfine Steam (DMS) is the powerhouse method of cleaning behind IZZI Plus’ exceptional functionality. DMS purifies textiles naturally and durably without using chemical products. More than 99.999%* of bacteria, fungi and dust mites as well as odors are effectively eliminated. Laurastar DMS leaves fabrics perfectly dry, allowing little chance for microorganisms to breed. It’s an ideal and eco-responsible way to keep your children and babies’ laundry, your employees’ environment, and your own home office perfectly pure and clean. Steaming fabrics with IZZI Plus must be done at a distance of 1 inch or less.

How Does the Laurastar IZZI Plus steam work?

Laurastar steam is generated in the boiler and the steam is heated to 284°F with a pressure of 50psi. In the process of superheating, it transforms into gas/steam. Then, when the steam enters the iron, it superheats again! This is where it becomes micro-fine water molecules in a gaseous state and it can be considered ‘dry’ because it no longer contains water in liquid form. Finally, the dry steam exits through the small holes of the iron with a speed of 50 ft/s, allowing the water molecules to penetrate deep into fabrics (even the most delicate). The energy of this process kills 99.999% of germs, fungi and viruses it comes into contact with, leaving the textiles and fabrics looking fresh.

Reasons to Choose Laurastar IZZI Plus for Your Home Office and Home

Laurastar’s IZZI Plus first and foremost keeps your home and home office environment clean and pure. Heat treatment has proven to be effective in eliminating germs, particularly where it isn’t easy to use detergents such as upholstered office furniture, blankets, or bedding. Steaming is a great alternative to the use of chemicals, especially for those with sensitivities and allergies. This also reduces the need to purchase different products to clean and sanitize different surfaces. IZZI Plus handles them all. And because your home office is near your family, you’ll appreciate that you can clean without exposing your loved ones to these chemicals.

Another reason to choose Laurastar’s IZZI Plus is to reduce the chance of Coronavirus spreading in your home office and home. If you or any in-house employees contract COVID-19, your business productivity can slow to a halt, putting stress and pressure on your business. Coronavirus is one of the many viruses that IZZI Plus is successful in eliminating. You also do not want to be the one to spread the virus to anyone you do business relations with. Purifying your clothes, textiles around your home office and surfaces people may come in contact with reduces the chance this virus exists and spreads.

Additionally, IZZI Plus helps business owners make that great first impression by refreshing their fabrics. When having business meetings in-house, the last thing you wants is an unpleasant smell making an impression or distraction. Business owners will appreciate that IZZI Plus removes unwanted odors from their home office and home. The power of steam will also soften your fabrics because as it leaves the iron it penetrates effectively and uniformly. This means the fabrics of your office will be comfortable and attractive to any of your office visitors.

Laurastar’s IZZI Plus keeps your wardrobe looking fantastic and increases your clothing’s longevity. Steaming is easier on your fabric’s fibers than regular ironing, as direct heat and fiber pressure are not being used. With steaming, you won’t get the wear and tear you get with ironing your clothes. Also, steaming not only removes wrinkles but keeps your garments fresh by eliminating odor-causing bacteria. This means you don’t need to wash or dry clean your garments as often, which in turn increases their longevity. This benefit of steaming can save you money in the long run (fewer dry cleaning trips, fewer clothing purchases).
