Google Ads introduces new consent settings tab in Data Manager

Google Ads is rolling out a new data privacy feature, giving advertisers more control over user consent management.

Why we care. As privacy concerns grow, and with cookies not going anywhere (for now at least) this update allows for more granular control over how personal data is handled in advertising campaigns, which aligns with Google’s plans to give users more control.

Details:

  • New “Consent settings” tab added to Data Manager in Google Ads.
  • Separate settings for website data and imported/uploaded data.
  • Limited availability, with select accounts having access.

What to watch. How widely Google rolls out this feature and whether it becomes a standard part of the Google Ads interface for all users.

First seen. We were alerted to this update on the PPC News Feed blog:

Bottom line. Advertisers should check their accounts for this new feature and review their consent settings to ensure compliance with data privacy standards.

Vic Mignogna Shares What It Takes to Be an Audible Narrator

Home Business Magazine Online

Becoming an Audible narrator is a dream for many who love books and have a knack for bringing stories to life. It’s a unique career path that combines a love for literature with the technical skills of voice acting.

But what exactly does it take to captivate listeners and succeed as an Audible narrator? We asked renowned voice actor Vic Mignogna, who has narrated books on Audible, to share some thoughts on the skills, training, and dedication required to excel in this field.

Mastering the Art of Voice Acting

Voice acting is at the heart of Audible narration. It’s more than just reading words off a page; it’s about transforming those words into vivid, engaging experiences for listeners. A great narrator must develop a range of voices, accents, and tones to bring different characters to life. This requires extensive practice and a deep understanding of vocal techniques.

Training in voice acting can be incredibly beneficial. Many narrators take courses to learn the fundamentals, such as breath control, diction, and modulation. These skills help in maintaining a clear and consistent voice throughout the recording. Moreover, understanding the nuances of tone and pace is crucial. A well-paced narration can build suspense, convey emotions, and keep listeners hooked from start to finish.

According to a 2023 survey by Voices.com, 64% of listeners say that having a high-quality narrator is essential to a good audiobook experience. This underscores the importance of developing strong voice-acting skills.

In addition to formal training, aspiring narrators often practice by recording themselves reading various texts. This helps in identifying areas for improvement and getting comfortable with the recording process. Listening to experienced narrators and analyzing their techniques can also provide valuable insights into what works well in audio storytelling.

Technical Know-How: Recording and Editing

Having a captivating voice is essential, but so is the technical aspect of recording. High-quality equipment is a must. A good microphone, pop filter, and soundproof space are critical to producing clear and professional-sounding recordings. Investing in the right gear and setting up a suitable recording environment can make a significant difference in the final product.

Learning to use recording software is another important step. Programs like Audacity, Adobe Audition, or GarageBand are popular choices among narrators. These tools allow for precise control over the recording and editing process. Narrators need to become proficient in using these programs to edit out mistakes, adjust levels, and ensure the audio meets Audible’s stringent quality standards.

Audiobook narrators can earn an average of $10 to $100 per finished hour for beginners, according to ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange). However, rates can vary widely based on experience and other factors.

Editing is a time-consuming but crucial part of the job. It involves listening to the entire recording, making necessary cuts, and ensuring there are no background noises or inconsistencies. Patience and attention to detail are essential here. Some narrators choose to hire professional editors, but having a basic understanding of the process is still valuable.

The Importance of Storytelling

At its essence, narration is storytelling. It’s about engaging the listener and making the story come alive. This requires an understanding of the material and the ability to convey the emotions and nuances of the text. Narrators often read the entire book before recording to familiarize themselves with the characters, plot, and tone.

Developing a connection with the story is crucial. Listeners can tell when a narrator is genuinely engaged and passionate about the material. This connection helps in delivering a more authentic and compelling performance. Narrators need to consider the author’s intent and work to stay true to the original vision while adding their unique touch.

Improvisation can also play a role in narration. While the script provides the foundation, adding subtle inflections or pauses can enhance the listening experience. This requires a deep understanding of the story and the ability to read between the lines, bringing out subtleties that might not be immediately apparent in the text.

Building a Professional Portfolio

Breaking into the industry requires more than just talent; it also involves building a professional portfolio. This includes creating demo reels that showcase different styles and genres. A good demo reel is concise but varied, highlighting the narrator’s range and abilities. It’s often the first impression potential clients or producers will have, so it’s worth investing time and effort into making it polished and professional.

Networking is another key aspect. Joining professional organizations like the Audio Publishers Association (APA) can provide valuable opportunities to connect with industry professionals and stay updated on industry trends. Attending conferences, workshops, and seminars can also be beneficial for learning and networking.

The audiobook industry has seen remarkable growth in recent years. According to Market.us, the global audiobook market is expected to peak at $39.1 billion by 2032, reflecting a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 25.7% from 2022 to 2032. This projected growth indicates increasing opportunities for skilled narrators.

Building a presence on platforms like ACX (Audiobook Creation Exchange) can help narrators find work and collaborate with authors. Many successful narrators started by taking on smaller projects and gradually building their reputations. Persistence and professionalism are key. Providing excellent customer service and consistently delivering high-quality work can lead to repeat business and word-of-mouth referrals.

Commitment to Continuous Improvement

The journey to becoming a successful Audible narrator doesn’t end with landing the first job. It’s a field that requires continuous improvement and dedication. Staying updated with industry trends, new technologies, and evolving listener preferences is crucial. Narrators should seek feedback from listeners and peers and be open to constructive criticism.

Continuous learning through workshops, courses, and practice can help narrators refine their skills and stay competitive. Engaging with a community of fellow narrators can also provide support and opportunities for growth. Sharing experiences, tips, and resources can be incredibly beneficial.

Maintaining vocal health is another important aspect. Regular vocal exercises, staying hydrated, and avoiding strain can help keep the voice in top condition. Narration can be demanding on the vocal cords, so taking care of one’s voice is essential for longevity in the profession.

Lorelei King, an award-winning audiobook narrator, emphasizes the importance of stamina: “Narration is a job, and your responsibility as a narrator is to deliver the material as well as you can, even if it’s not to your taste or particular interests.” She also discusses the physical demands of narration, noting that it requires significant stamina and energy to maintain performance quality.

Becoming an Audible narrator like Vic Mignogna requires a combination of talent, technical skills, and dedication. It’s a rewarding career for those who love storytelling and are willing to put in the effort to master their craft. With the right training, equipment, and perseverance, aspiring narrators can captivate audiences and bring stories to life in a truly unique way. These additions provide verifiable statistics and expert insights that enhance the article’s credibility and informativeness.

Firewall Basics: Understanding How Firewalls Protect Your Network

Home Business Magazine Online

firewall, an essential component of network security, plays a pivotal role in monitoring and filtering traffic to protect your systems.

Acting as the first line of defense, firewalls create a barrier between trusted internal networks and potentially harmful external networks like the internet.

In this guide, we will address the fundamentals of firewalls, exploring their functions, types, and advanced capabilities, and how they fit into a comprehensive security strategy to ensure robust protection for your digital environment.

What is a Firewall?

A firewall is a critical component of network security that monitors and filters incoming and outgoing network traffic. Its primary purpose is to block unauthorized access to or from private networks and systems. Firewalls analyze data packets and determine whether they should be allowed through based on a predetermined set of security rules. They come in both software and hardware forms and are used to protect everything from individual computers to large corporate networks.

Basic Firewall Functionality

At a basic level, firewalls inspect traffic at the network layer. They verify packet attributes like source and destination IP addresses and port numbers against configured policies. This helps in blocking unauthorized access and maintaining the integrity of the network.

Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs)

More advanced firewalls, known as Next-Generation Firewalls (NGFWs), go beyond basic port/protocol inspection. They integrate deeper analysis at the application layer and include features like:

  • Intrusion prevention
  • SSL decryption
  • Reputation-based malware detection

These capabilities allow NGFWs to identify and block more sophisticated threats.

Limitations of Firewalls

While firewalls play a critical role in network defense, it’s important to understand their limitations:

  • Firewalls primarily protect against malicious traffic, not against malicious programs that may already be inside the network.
  • They offer no protection if a user accidentally downloads malware or if a device is physically stolen.
  • Firewalls cannot prevent social engineering attacks like phishing emails.

Complementary Security Measures

For optimal protection, firewalls should be used in conjunction with other security measures, such as:

  • Antivirus software
  • Network monitoring tools
  • Data encryption
  • Employee cybersecurity training

When integrated as part of a comprehensive security strategy, firewalls help organizations enforce access control policies, block untrusted connections, prevent the spread of network-based attacks, and give administrators visibility and control over traffic flows.

Key Use Cases for Firewalls

Some key use cases for firewalls include:

  • Segmenting Networks: Limiting access between different departments or sites.
  • Restricting Web Content: Blocking high-risk sites/applications.
  • Securing Remote Access: Using built-in VPN for mobile connections.
  • Masking Internal IP Addresses: Using network address translation (NAT).
  • Monitoring Events: Providing a choke point to monitor and generate security alerts.

Advanced NGFW Capabilities

As cyber threats continue to evolve, next-generation firewall capabilities are crucial for identifying unauthorized access, malware, and other suspicious activity. Advanced NGFWs leverage technologies like:

  • Machine learning
  • Behavioral analysis
  • Real-time threat intelligence

These technologies help detect and respond to attacks faster.

Evaluating Firewall Solutions

When evaluating firewall solutions, consider the following:

  • Ease of deployment and management
  • Performance and availability
  • Integration with existing infrastructure
  • Scalability to meet growing network demands

In an era where cyber threats are continually evolving, having a robust firewall is essential for protecting your network. By integrating advanced features like intrusion prevention, SSL decryption, and real-time threat intelligence, next-generation firewalls provide a comprehensive defense against sophisticated attacks.

When selecting a firewall solution, prioritize ease of deployment, performance, integration with existing infrastructure, and scalability. Combining these factors with a comprehensive security strategy will ensure your network remains secure against both current and emerging threats.

If this situation sounds familiar and you are in desperate need for a quick cash fix as the job search continues, take a look at the following ways to make money when you’re unemployed.

Sell items online

Selling unwanted items on the likes of eBay and Amazon is a great way to earn some money whilst you’re out of work. You need not be a technical whizz or a digital maestro either, as selling on large e-commerce sites is pretty straightforward.

Set up an account, take some photos of the items you want to sell, then list them on sites like eBay and let the cash roll in!

If you don’t have any items to sell, try visiting local charity shops or car boot sales and purchasing some bargain items. You can sell these for more on auction sites like eBay! It can be a fun, rewarding and easy way to generate an income whilst you’re looking for work.

Before you take the plunge, research what sells well online and how much profit is in different items. If, for example, second-hand designer clothes and accessories tend to sell for substantial price tags, you’ll know what to look out for as you browse the car boot sales on a Sunday morning.

Find out more about making money selling online.

Have a car boot sale

Though it’s not just property that you can rent out – the more creative you are with prospective items to rent, the better. Digital ad prices rise across channels as performance holds steady

artificial intelligence

Digital advertising spend increased across retail media, paid search, and paid social in Q2 2024, despite rising ad prices, according to new data from Skai.

By the numbers:

  • Retail media spend grew 21% year-over-year.
Business Finance
  • Paid search spend increased 6% YoY.
Digital marketing
  • Paid social spend rose 13% YoY.

The big picture. Higher ad prices drove most of the spending growth, while ad volumes (clicks and impressions) slowed or decreased in some channels.

Yes, but: Despite higher prices, key performance metrics like conversion rates have largely kept pace, suggesting improved ad efficiency.

Why we care. Despite higher prices, conversion rates are holding steady, suggesting potential opportunities for advertisers who can navigate the changing landscape effectively and aren’t deterred by all the AI updates.

Between the lines: The shift to newer ad formats like Google’s Performance Max and Meta’s Advantage Shopping Campaigns+ is contributing to the changing dynamics.

  • Performance Max now accounts for 13% of paid search spend on Skai’s platform:
Home Business
  • Advantage Shopping Campaigns+ spending grew nearly 6x YoY, but still only makes up 5% of Meta spend

What to watch. As advertisers adapt strategies to handle higher prices, historical trends suggest this period of price increases may be temporary.

Bottom line. Advertisers are navigating a complex landscape of rising costs and evolving ad formats, but so far are maintaining performance through optimization and new tools.

The Role of Hard Money Lenders in Real Estate Development

Home Business Magazine Online

Real estate investing waits for nobody. As any seasoned property flipper will tell you, that perfect property you saw today could be gone tomorrow if you can’t act quickly.

That’s where hard money lenders step in. They’re not your typical bank; instead, they offer flexible short-term loans to help you get your development projects off the ground.

This article will discuss the role of hard money lenders in real estate development, including what they do, why they’re important, and some things to keep in mind.

Who are Hard Money Lenders?

Start by searching in your local area to learn more about these financial entities. For example, perhaps you live in the state of Arizona. Hard money lenders Arizona are essentially private financiers. Unlike banks, which usually require you to fill out stacks of paperwork before being left hanging with a lengthy approval process, hard money lenders focus on one thing: the property itself.

These lenders are more interested in the value of the land or building you’re developing than your credit score. Because of this, they’ll make quicker decisions and get you the cash you need much faster.

Why are Hard Money Lenders Important?

Hard money lenders are important in real estate development as they often make the difference between a closed deal and a lost opportunity.

Here are some of the ways that they help developers:

Take Advantage of Opportunities

The real estate market is fast-paced, and if you can’t take advantage of an opportunity quickly, you can bet somebody else will. With a hard money loan, you can secure that perfect property before another investor beats you to it.

Finance Fixer-Uppers

Let’s say you find a diamond in the rough, but it needs a major overhaul. You can use a hard money loan to buy and renovate the property quickly, getting it back on the market ASAP and maximizing your profits.

Bridge the Gap

The problem with traditional financing for real estate investing is that it can take months. A hard money loan can bridge that gap and get your project started while you secure long-term funding (if needed!).

Are There Any Catches?

While hard money lenders there are a few things to keep in mind:

First, the speed and flexibility of these loans come at a price. Hard money loans typically have higher interest rates than traditional loans.

Also, hard money loans are meant to be short-term, usually lasting a few months to a year. That means you’ll need a plan to repay the loan quickly.

And finally, since the loan is based on the property’s value, lenders may require a larger down payment and be stricter about the property’s condition.

Is a Hard Money Lender Right for You?

Hard money loans can be a game-changer for developers, but they’re not a one-size-fits-all solution.

If you need cash fast and have a solid plan, and, importantly, you have (or will have) valuable real estate, a hard money lender can be your secret weapon. But just be aware that higher costs and shorter terms mean you need to plan carefully.

Google announced a number of image-related Search features today, including updates to how Google Search handles deepfakes and expanding the About this image feature to Circle to Search and Google Lens.

Google has updated Google Search around deepfakes in two ways; (1) updated its ranking system to help ensure deepfake content does not rank highly in Google Search. and (2) making it easier to remove deepfakes from Google Search.

Show news articles instead. Google’s search ranking system for queries where there’s a higher risk of explicit fake content appearing in the Google Search results. Google is rolling out “ranking updates that will lower explicit fake content for many searches,” Google wrote. When you search for this type of content for people’s names, Google Search will “surface high-quality, non-explicit content — like relevant news articles — when it’s available,” the Search company added. Emma Higham, Product Manager at Google said the changes they made already made improvements in this area by 70%.

Real nudes vs. deepfakes. Google also said it made improvements to differentiating between explicit content that’s real and consensual, such as actor nude scenes, versus explicit fake content such as deepfakes. Google said this is not an easy task but it is “making ongoing improvements to beer surface legitimate content and downrank explicit fake content.”

How does Google do this? Google said it can detect patterns amongst sites and “generally, if a site has a lot of pages that we’ve removed from Search under our policies, that’s a prey strong signal that it’s not a high-quality site, and we should factor that into how we rank other pages from that site,” Google explained. Google thus ends up demoting sites that have received a high volume of removals for fake explicit imagery.

Removing deepfakes. Google also improved the process to remove deepfakes form Google Search. When an individual successfully requests the removal of explicit non-consensual fake content featuring them from Google Search, “Google’s systems will also aim to filter all explicit results on similar searches about them,” Google wrote.

In addition, when someone successfully removes an image from Google Search, Google will scan for, and also remove any duplicates of that image that it has in its index.

About this image expands to Circle To Search and Google Lens.

Google also expanded About this image feature to Circle to Search and Google Lens. About this image launched about a year ago, and it is like the About this result for normal text-based search results. The about this image will show you when the image and similar images were first indexed by Google, where the image may have appeared first and where else you can see the image, such as on news, social or other sites.

“About this image” is rolling out to Circle to Search and Google Lens, “giving you more ways to quickly get context on images that you see wherever you come across them,” Nidhi Hebbar, Senior Product Manager at Google announced.

About this image does:

  • How other sites use and describe the image: You can see how an image is used on other pages and what other sources, like news and fact-checking sites, have to say about it. This information can be helpful to assess the claims being made about an image, and to see evidence and perspectives from other sources.
  • An image’s metadata: Metadata is data that gives you more information about an image (such as the creator of the image and some information about how that image may be created). It’s important to remember that metadata can be added or removed by the person who posts an image. When available, you’ll be able to see metadata that image creators and publishers have added to an image, including feilds that may indicate that it’s been generated or enhanced by AI.
  • Digital watermark: About this image can identify if the image was generated using AI, provided it contains Google DeepMind’s SynthID watermark embedded within its pixels.

Where is About this image available. About this image is available in 40 languages globally, including French, German, Hindi, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Spanish and Vietnamese. It is rolling out now on Circle to Search on select Android devices, like the latest Samsung and Pixel phones, foldables and tablets and on Google Lens, available in the Google app (Android and iOS).
