Amazon’s ad services revenue rises 22%, bringing in more than $10 billion in Q2

Amazon generated $10.68 billion from its ad services in the second quarter of 2023.

The figure marks a 22% increase from the same period in 2022, as the wider digital ad market begins to show signs of recovery from the economic downturn.

ad services

Why we care. Following a slump in the digital ad market amid the economic downturn, Google, Meta and Microsoft have all reported improvements in advertising revenue. However, none have achieved year-on-year percentage growth quite as strong as Amazon. The retail giant’s solid performance sends a clear message that the digital ad industry is rebounding which should offer reassurance to hesitant marketers. Restoring faith in the sector should help restore trust, leading to increased ad spend in Q3.

Leading the way with AI. Amazon partly attributed its strong performance to the introduction of more advanced machine learning models. The company explained that its new technology has been helping advertisers reach their target audiences with optimal cost-efficiency as the industry moves away from third-party cookies. Amazon reported that marketers benefited from increased click-through rates and ROAS, along with a fall in cost per impression.

What has Amazon said? Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO, described Q2 as “another strong quarter of progress”. He said:

  • “We continued lowering our cost to serve in our fulfillment network, while also providing Prime customers with the fastest delivery speeds we’ve ever recorded.”
  • “Our AWS growth stabilized as customers started shifting from cost optimization to new workload deployment, and AWS has continued to add to its meaningful leadership position in the cloud with a slew of generative AI releases that make it much easier and more cost-effective for companies to train and run models (Trainium and Inferentia chips), customize Large Language Models to build generative AI applications and agents (Bedrock), and write code much more efficiently with CodeWhisperer.”
  • “We’re continuing to see strong demand for our advertising services as the team keeps innovating for brands, including the ramp up for Thursday Night Football with the ability for advertisers to tailor their spots by audience and create interactive experiences for consumers.”
  • “We remain excited about what lies ahead for customers and the company.”

Finding the Right Side Hustle for You

Home Business Magazine Online

By Ibi Montesino, Executive Vice President, Chief of Staff at Herbalife

It should come as no surprise to anyone that millions of people are struggling to make ends meet due to the current economy. Contributing factors include inflation reaching its highest level in 40 years, accompanied by skyrocketing food and fuel costs, and rising rents. Additionally, a higher interest rate environment is causing many companies to cut costs, often through layoffs.

So, what can people to do to alleviate the financial burden?

What to Do If You Can’t Pay Your Bills

For some, this means asking others for help. In fact, according to a recent Herbalife survey of 8,500 respondents across 10 countries, including 2,000 Americans, four in 10 people have asked their loved ones for money over the past year to deal with the rising cost of living. Results show respondents are relying on others for help with essentials, including groceries (40%) and their rent or mortgage (29%).

Asking for assistance is difficult, but it is not indicative of people’s lack of effort. In fact, 56% of respondents currently have a side hustle or other form of supplemental income. Of those people with side hustles, 55% shared they started it solely to make ends meet, 40% were looking for means to deal with the rising cost of living, 38% wanted to be less reliant on a single source of income, and 36% said they started a side hustle to have a disposable income.

Side Hustles Provide Flexibility and Opportunity to Earn Extra Income

In addition to providing an additional source of income, many side hustles are flexible, allowing people to work at their own schedule. In fact, the survey results show that Americans with a source of additional income said, on average, they needed to earn about $400 more per month to live comfortably. The research also indicates that 28% of respondents with a side hustle dedicate 3–5 hours a week to their side hustle, while 24% devote 6–10 hours per week, with an average of respondents commiting about eight and a half hours per week to that side hustle.

There are many options based on interests, resources, and availability if you believe a side hustle could be beneficial to you. Some individuals care for children or animals, while others perform housekeeping, landscaping, or other handyman tasks. These types of secondary jobs can help people earn extra money, but it can be difficult to start the business and keep it running without a support system. Often times people find a passion for a side hustle, but can’t see it come to fruition.

Direct Selling Opportunities Can Ease the Financial Strain

Some individuals find direct selling, otherwise known as network marketing, to be a more suitable alternative. This is when you are an authorized representative that sells products for a company, and the big benefit is that there is often training and a support system to help you succeed.

If you’re interested in direct selling, it’s important to find an opportunity that works best for you. Here are several simple tips to help find the right network marketing company:

  • Pinpoint the ideal product or service: Finding a consumable product that sells consistently and needs replacement is a great option. Choose a product category that you’re passionate about is important because you’re more likely to dedicate time and effort to it.
  • Learn about the company: Before deciding what company to move forward with, researching their background is a must. Typically, the longer the company has been in business, the more infrastructure and experience it has in helping its distributors.
  • Determine start-up costs: Once you identify the right company for you, determine the cost of the start-up kit. It should contain everything you need to get started running your business.
  • Study the compensation plan: This shows you how the company plans to incentivize and reward your hard work. It will also give you an idea of income expectations, income frequency and how long it will take to reach your goals.
  • Confirm marketing support: Aside from your start-up kit, having access to marketing support can help you grow your business. For example, the company should help you identify the target market to understand your customers better and provide online marketing resources to help you launch effective promotions.
  • Research training opportunities: Ongoing training and opportunities to connect with people going through the same experience will help inspire you and enable you to run your business better.
  • Opportunity for growth: Ensure that the company has demonstrated continuous growth opportunities and is committed to helping you with resources and support as you strive to reach your goals.

No one can predict the future of the economy, but you can take control of your finances by generating additional income. Start by researching opportunities and select the best one for you.

11 Ways to Make Your Bedroom Feel More Cozy

Home Business Magazine Online

The bedroom is your sweet escape. Make it feel cozy. You deserve a place to relax and unwind. A restful environment will elevate your well being and help you get a good night’s sleep so that you’re ready to take on each day. Read on for 11 ways to create a comfy retreat. Integrate a couple of these enhancements and your bedroom will be feeling hygge in no time.

Add a Soft Rug

Snug as a bug in a rug. That’s how you’ll feel with a soft rug in your room. Visually, an area rug brings warmth to a room and sets a comforting scene. Especially if you have hard floors, a rug by the bed will deliver a soft surface to step onto. Try a fluffy rug or one with a soft chunky texture. Layering rugs will enhance the cozy experience even more. As rugs are experts at tying together a room, adding them will help create a harmonious-looking room.

Pick Up Some Pillows

Up your pillow game. With different sizes, shapes, colors, and textures, there’s a multitude of fun ways to decorate the bed. Experiment with prints such as stripes, chevron, or floral patterns. Variation is easy on the eye, so mix it up. If you don’t want to go crazy on colors, a tonal look can be very chic. You can vary the overall effect by using different textures and sizes. For example, nestling a smooth pillow next to a faux fur one. Your bed should look like something you want to dive into, and pillows do it best.

Light Candles

Candles are amazing in stimulating the senses. In glass jars, they look elegant even when unlit. When they are in action, they illuminate the room with a lovely flickering glow. If you love the comforting crackle of a fireplace, try candles with wood wicks. Lastly, candles come in every scent imaginable. Nostalgic scents like the ocean, pumpkin spice, or pine instantly set the mood for every season. Light them in the evening for maximum cozy vibes. Just like the wax, you’ll feel your worries melt away.

Aromatherapy

Scents have a big impact on mood, and there are other scent options besides candles. Reed diffusers fill the room with delicious scents without being overbearing. An essential oil diffuser provides aromatherapy, and some also have a humidifier function. Many find essential oils less abrasive than room sprays. Release energizing citrus to jumpstart your day or soothing lavender to help you get into sleep mode.

Cuddle Up in a Luxurious Throw

Invest in a plush throw blanket. It will add to the visual texture of the room, especially if you get a sumptuous statement fabric such as velvet or faux fur. Soft chunky knits are also irresistible. Rest in a seating area or keep on your bed for naptime. If you appreciate a vintage aesthetic, try a quilt. Their patterns are decorative and they have a folksy charm.

Hang Up Textile Wall Art

Bedroom

Personalizing the walls with art will make your bedroom feel more homey. Framed prints are always lovely, but for something different consider textile art for your walls. They add dimension to the room and create a contemporary look that’s still cozy. Macrame tapestries and woven wall hangings in natural colors make serene bedroom decorations.

Hide Your Tech Away

As you can see, textures in various forms are effective in amping the cozy factor in your bedroom. Technology and wayward wires can really kill the vibe. Plus, kinky cords look downright sloppy. If you have a computer station in the bedroom, consider wireless accessories. Use wire coverings that make wires less conspicuous. You can even find coverings that are disguised as furniture.

Integrate Wood Accents

Wood has a natural warmth to it. Adding a bookcase, headboard, or chest creates a homey ambiance. If you have a smaller budget, there are also wood-themed items that can be integrated into the room. For example, candles with bark-like coverings or tables and decorative bowls with tree-motifs. These touches will make you feel like you’re nested in a storybook woodland.

Accent a Wall with Printed Wallpaper

Four white walls can feel a little sterile. An accent wall will add depth to the room. With wallpaper growing in popularity, consider a printed wall instead of a painted one. Many current day patterns have a vintage-inspired spin, integrating mid-century or Victorian motifs. A dark accent wall will make the room feel more intimate. If that’s not your personality, you could also go for botanical prints or light, soothing colors.

Bring in Comfy Furniture

Soft, inviting furniture will create a cozy lounge experience. Place a small area rug in a section of the room and add a wide, cushy chair along with a plush throw or pillow. Make it your morning coffee spot by adding a small side table. With a buttery leather chair and a lamp, you now have a reading nook. On rainy days, this will be your favorite place to go.

Creative Lighting

If your bedroom has harsh overhead lights, it’s time to bring in soft light alternatives. Warm lighting will allow eyes to relax. Bedside lamps will do the trick. If you’re looking for something different, try a Himalayan salt lamp. They add to an organic aesthetic and give off a warm pink glow. Accent lights, such as shelf backlighting, add stylish intrigue to the room.

Your bedroom is the place to get away from the stresses of the world. Optimize your bedroom to make it a safe place to land. Try any of these comfy and cozy ideas for a bedroom you’ll love nestling into.

Meta launches new AI tool that creates music using text prompts

Meta has rolled out a new AI tool that enables marketers to create music using text prompts.

The new system, which is called AudioCraft, uses three models, AudioGen, EnCodec and MusicGen to produce high-quality, realistic sound effects, compression and generation, in addition to music.

All music used to train MusicGen is owned by Meta and is specifically licensed for this purpose, the company added.

Why we care. Background music and sound effects can help bring an advert to life, significantly enhancing engagement, making it a vital aspect of any campaign. If marketers use AI to create music, they will have access to an unlimited number of samples that can be created instantly, potentially saving them a significant amount of time. This also means that marketers will no longer need to hire and pay for musicians, saving them money.

AI boom

Cause for concern. While the thought of saving time and money will undoubtedly appeal to advertisers, there are some issues to consider before relying on AI for music and sound creation. Artists have previously accused tech giants of copyright violations when training their AI. In fact, Google was sued just last month for allegedly stealing content for AI training. If there are copyright complications, this could be seriously problematic for advertisers with financial consequences.

It’s also worth noting that if all brands were to suddenly rely on AI for music and sound creation, there is a risk that music won’t sound original, making it harder for campaigns to stand out. Issues like this can negatively impact engagement, which in turn will affect conversions.

What has Meta said? Meta posted a statement on its official blog to unveil its new technology. It read:

  • “While we’ve seen a lot of excitement around generative AI for images, video, and text, audio has seemed to lag a bit behind. There’s some work out there, but it’s highly complicated and not very open, so people aren’t able to readily play with it.”
  • “Generating high-fidelity audio of any kind requires modeling complex signals and patterns at varying scales. Music is arguably the most challenging type of audio to generate as it’s composed of local and long-range patterns, from a suite of notes to a global musical structure with multiple instruments.”
  • “Having a solid open source foundation will foster innovation and complement the way we produce and listen to audio and music in the future. With even more controls, we think MusicGen can turn into a new type of instrument — just like synthesizers when they first appeared.”

8 new Google Analytics 4 features to enhance app measurement and performance

Google Analytics 4 has unveiled eight new features to improve app campaign measurement and performance.

The additional AI-powered insights have been set up to give marketers a better understanding of how users behave across both web and app – all in one place.

Why we care. The more insights you have into who your target audience is, the more effectively you can optimize campaigns and ensure content is as engaging as possible. The better a campaign can connect with its target audience, the more conversions a brand will likely see, leading to a higher ROI.

What are the new features? Google has spent the last few months working on new GA4 tools to give marketers improved audience insights. Here are eight new features that are available to use right now:

App Store
  1. New unnotified users suggested audience – This feature enables brands to engage more easily with existing app users who may not have yet been reached via push notifications. Considering only 37% of customers enable push notifications, this tool could prove particularly useful for improving reach.
  2. Seamlessly re-use app and web audiences – Once you have created an audience in GA4, this feature will ensure only relevant app users will be targeted for your app campaigns.
  3. Access  GA4 Audience Builder in Google Ads – You will be able to build audiences directly in GA4 in the coming weeks, which will simplify the setting up and managing campaigns process.
  4. Additional performance uplift – This tool automatically optimizes App campaign performance. In order to get started, ensure you activate Google signals in your linked GA4 property.
  5. Comprehensive web-to-app conversion measurement – Google’s new privacy-safe URL parameter enables better iOS app conversion measurement for web campaigns which deep link users into an app.
  6. Integrations with SKAdNetwork – You can configure your SKAdNetwork conversion value schema using this tool for improved in-app event measurement and optimization.
  7. On-device conversion measurement – GA4 has rolled out additional support for more types of consented user sign-ins, such as phone numbers. This solution works without any user-identifying information ever leaving a user’s device or being disclosed to external parties, including Google.
  8. Geo-based conversion lift measurement – This tool, which is currently available in beta, gives marketers the ability to run controlled experiments to more accurately understand the causal, incremental effects of your iOS App campaigns.

  • “Many businesses are seeing performance success with using Google Analytics 4, particularly on iOS. After implementing and beginning to bid on Google Analytics 4 events, Revolut saw a 12.5% increase in additional first-opens and achieved a 11.2% decrease in its CPI.”

Best Practices for On-Page SEO

Home Business Magazine Online

Search Engine Optimization (SEO) has become an essential tool in many digital marketing campaigns today. It’s something you should definitely consider utilizing as well. On-page SEO plays a significant role in this process. This technique involves optimizing individual web pages to improve their ranking and attract more relevant traffic from search engines.

This post will explore some of the best practices for on-page SEO. The information provided will help you improve your website’s performance and aid in your company’s SEO efforts, so read on.

Understand the Importance of Category Pages

One important aspect of on-page SEO is the optimization of category pages. Although these pages are often overlooked, they play a vital role in helping search engines understand the structure and organization of your website. By properly optimizing your category pages, you can improve the relevance and visibility of your website’s content.

To optimize your business site’s category pages, start by making sure each page has a clear and descriptive title tag and meta description. These elements help search engines understand the content and purpose of the page. You must also check if the content on each category page is well-organized and easy to navigate. Use headings and subheadings to break up the content and make it more readable.

Another important measure is to include internal links on your category pages. By adding links to related content, you can help search engines understand the relationship between different pages on your website. This will help enhance the relevance and authority of your category pages.

Leverage the Power of Merchant Center

Another essential tool for on-page SEO is Google’s Merchant Center. This platform allows you to upload and manage product information for your online store. Using this tool can help you guarantee that your product information is accurate and updated, ultimately improving your website’s visibility in search results.

To get started with Merchant Center, you must create an account and verify your company website first. Once done, you can begin uploading your product data. Be sure to include detailed information about each product, including its title, description, price, and so on. This information will be used by Google to display your products in relevant search results.

In addition to uploading product data, you can use Merchant Center to manage your product feeds and track the performance of your products in search results. This can help you determine areas for improvement and make data-driven decisions concerning your online store’s performance.

Optimize Your Content

One of the most important aspects of on-page SEO is optimizing your website’s content. This includes both the text on your web pages and any images or videos you include.

Start by performing keyword research to identify different words and phrases your target audience utilize when looking up information on the web. Take note of keyword search volume and other important parameters.

Next, use these target keywords into your content seamlessly and meaningfully. Avoid keyword stuffing or other manipulative tactics, as these can hurt your website’s search engine ranking performance.

Besides using keywords, ensure that your website content is easy to read and well-written. Utilize short paragraphs and sentences. Break up longer sections with subheadings or bullet points to promote better content readability. This will make your content more accessible to readers and search engine crawlers.

Finally, it’s important to ensure that your content is valuable and relevant to your target audience. This means providing helpful information that helps readers solve problems or learn something new. When you craft and share high-quality content that meets the needs of your audience, you can improve engagement and drive more relevant traffic to your website.

Use Descriptive URLs

Using descriptive URLs is an effective strategy that can significantly enhance your company’s on-page SEO tactics. A good URL should accurately reflect the page’s content and be easy for users to comprehend.

To create descriptive URLs, use short, meaningful words separated by hyphens. Avoid using long numbers or special characters strings, as these can be difficult for users to read and remember. You can also include relevant keywords in your URLs whenever possible.

Utilizing descriptive URLs improves the user experience as well as helps search engines understand the content of each page on your website too. If you use clear and meaningful URLs, you can improve the relevance and visibility of your web pages in search results pages.

Wrapping Up

In conclusion, on-page SEO is essential to optimizing your website for search engines. By following best practices such as optimizing category pages, using Merchant Center, creating high-quality content, and using descriptive URLs, you can improve your website’s visibility and performance in search results.

Make Money Today … Transcribing

Transcription Jobs

Working as a transcriptionist can be a great way to earn some extra money from home, so as long as you can type, you won’t need much training.

The plus points are that the jobs generally use entirely web-based software – so there’s no need to download anything – and it should be compatible with all modern laptops.

WHAT IS TRANSCRIBING?

Transcribing is the typing up of audio conversations so that they can be logged and used digitally. All kinds of audio needs transcribing into text, from the more formal ones such as HR disciplinary meetings, interviews from the national press, as well as other noteworthy events or interviews. But there’s also some really interesting content like audio books, discussions of entertainment or academic content as well as business meetings and focus groups.

HOW IT WORKS

transcribing

After an initial training phase, jobs come in on a dashboard and you have to claim a job to start work. You can only claim one job at any one time, and the jobs either need to be typed from scratch or you edit an auto-transcript.

All jobs are paid by the audio minute in US $, generally from $0.30-$1, though can range far above that.

Value is based on difficulty of audio. Scratch jobs generally pay much higher per minute, but they are significantly very difficult to do: once you use auto-transcript work, you may not want to focus on scratch jobs.

The subjects of jobs vary widely, with a lot of business meetings, marketing focus groups, some media interviews (including nationals), and entertainment & education themes also feature very regularly.

Jobs are often sorted by accent, with US accents being the majority of work, however this sometimes means that UK accents can attract a premium and a UK transcriber can find these easier than the majority working the site. So, for example, you may choose to specialise in UK accents and Irish and Scottish ones in particular because of this marginal premium.

The ‘piece rate’ of a job can vary though. It’s not clear why it might vary, but you will see the cost of jobs going up and down. Often when there are only a few jobs on the site, their value can drop, and at peak points there can be over 1000 jobs to pick from, normally in the low 100s.

HOW TO GET IN

We spoke to transcriber Dan Phillips, who advises: “There is a brief test on grammar and then a training period where you complete some past videos. These are then graded out of 5 on various metrics. You need to achieve on all metrics to pass into the main job site.

Your work will be graded randomly, though I found it tended to be highly regular and then drop off. Again you need to maintain 4.5 on accuracy metrics. Feedback tended to be pretty good where you didn’t get things right. All these quality controls are done by other transcribers.”

TOP TIPS

transcribing

Dan Phillips provided some good advice for getting into transcribing: “Audio from one interview is often split into several jobs sections, so get one done and try to nab the other ones, as that will reduce your need for background info research.

If you have a subject specialism in real life, try to find clips that reflect that. So, if you know about football, or US Sport in particular, that will help target that niche. Initially at least, only pick clips that have two people in an interview situation. Focus groups tend to be very difficult to differentiate as you don’t know how many people are in the room.”

Phillips does say that “Transcribing can be a good way to earn smaller amounts such as £50 a week, but it can be harder to earn over £100 without significant time investment or loss of sleep.

Lower paying jobs do have far clearer audio. I tend to go for around $0.45-60 a minute stuff. Higher ones can be very hard, unless they’re UK accents. Also, the software can speed up and slow down audio if you want to go double-time or slow things down.

As a UK national, you might find (for example) Australian clips easier to transcribe than US clips (this seems to be quite common), but if you know nothing about Australia, Aboriginal place names can be difficult to identify at first.”

where to start

One transcription company (not affiliated with this site: just for example purposes) is Rev, where you can ‘favourite’ different clients, and they often regularly post, which helps you narrow down your favourite accents or topic when there’s a deluge of work. Subsequently if you then get good ratings (4.8+), alongside other metrics for meeting deadlines, you can be promoted to Rev+ where you get first pick of the jobs, where the best work is available

It’s worth noting that these companies take their clients’ confidentiality very seriously ,and will ban for life those who breach it and publish gossip from clips on the web. So although you might be tempted to share something salacious you’ve been privy to, just don’t do it!

Creating the Perfect TikTok Video

Home Business Magazine Online

Creating the perfect TikTok video should be easy, shouldn’t it? People have gone viral from their beds. No make up, no ring light, no editing, nothing. TikTok is a place that embraces the “authentic” content, i.e., rough, straightforward, unpolished, but that isn’t your only option.

That can be a perfect TikTok video, and it might even be your calling card when it comes to your content style, but there is a lot more that you can do with your TikTok content. There are a lot of options that will help you to stand out in the TikTok content market. If you’re looking to give your TikTok content a little something more, take a look at our guide to creating the perfect TikTok for some tips.

How to start

How you start all depends on the purpose of the TikTok video. What the small influencer trying to up their subscriber count is doing is going to be different from the brand looking to market their company. Even within that, the person trying to be funny is going to be different from the glamourous lifestyle blogger.

So, think about who you want to be and who you want to appeal to and then plan accordingly. Is this a one-man team? Do you want to get your costume on and make a full production of it? Or are you happy letting your post-production editing do the heavy lifting of making your point?

As for the practical, there are a few different ways you can go about making your video. You can capture straight from the TikTok app by simply pointing your camera and pressing the big button at the bottom. There are filters to choose from and a simple editing process built into the app. Additionally, you can shoot your film straight from your camera phone and edit it in whatever app you prefer and then upload it to TikTok.

Our one tip would be to get a tripod at the very least. A ring light will do wonders for your skin but if your camera is shaky, every commenter is going to bring it up.

What to add

Once you have your raw footage, you can add whatever you like to it. Maybe you want to play with the graphics or add a fun filter. Maybe you want your TikTok video to be taken seriously as a source of information so you can add screenshots and explanatory captions, etc.

Part of the editing process is doing all the little things that have made TikTok the more accessible place it is proud to be, like closed captions, links, hashtags, etc. Some of these things can be automated for you, but if you’re taking TikTok seriously, you should double check the subtitles or add them yourself. Closed captions often get things wrong so you sound like you’re going really in depth about a potato for example. You will confuse people who rely on them, defeating the purpose.

Then again you might also give someone a laugh. You can find out how to add captions on TikTok here.

Dos and don’ts

  • Do edit out the Millennial Pause. Simply because you don’t want to hear about it in the commons. Apparently, it’s not cool to make sure the camera’s recording before you start speaking.
  • Don’t forget that TikTok is all about entertainment first. You can be educational, serious, or marketing, as long as you are entertaining in some way to the viewer, you will be watched.
  • Do get straight to the point. Even skits that meander to the punchline of their jokes are failing on TikTok. On the other hand, crowd work from professional standups is the thing that is going viral on TikTok. That’s because TikTok users have no time to waste. Get to the point and get there fast.
  • Don’t forget that the ears are more sensitive than the eyes, which means that what your user is hearing is more important than what they’re seeing. Avoid the sarcastic, “I can’t quite hear the music over the speech” comments by being aware of some basic sound mixing.
  • Do give credit to anyone who helped make your TikTok. That includes anyone whose TikTok you’re jumping off from. If you were inspired, want to elaborate on a point, or are responding, credit the creator.

Tips from the pros

If we’re honest, content on TikTok is so varied that the best piece of advice that the pros can give is to be yourself. The one thing all the biggest TikTokers have in common is a personality that shines through their editing, whether they’re in bed calling out class issues or putting on skits pretending to be a family of people with tiny hands.

The biggest tip is to simply be brave. If you have an idea, film it, and see where it takes you.

Social Learning Platforms Are the Future of Developing Talent

Social learning platforms use social learning technology to drive employee engagement further.

Social learning platforms that allow employees to leverage the power of group learning as they grow professionally are the future of enterprise learning. These tools allow employees to develop relevant learning in real-time, decentralize knowledge by making it available to everyone, and make learning more engaging by utilizing the technology employees have come to familiarize themselves with.

A recent survey from Brandon Hall Group reveals that 73% of companies expect to increase their focus on social learning, and over 60% hope employees will interact with learning resources daily.

Why social learning platforms are the future of continued education

I was drawn to social learning out of personal frustration. In high school — and even into college — I was the student who never understood why we were studying the Pythagorean theorem or memorizing the periodic table instead of learning real-world skills that businesses need now.

Like almost everyone entering the workforce, I found I was still unprepared for everyday workplace challenges. But when I was able to meet with company executives for more intimate one-on-one meetings in coffee shops, I learned more from them than I did in my formal education. That’s when I started thinking about the concept of social learning.

Social learning platforms offer this new future of continued education for three reasons, beginning with the development of relevant learning. It takes universities years to incorporate formal curricula, and corporate education takes six-to-twelve months to turn out online modules.

In today’s world, you can’t afford to be that slow. You need relevant learning content that addresses what’s happening now. I call this the Happening-Capture-Deliver ratio — the time between when something happens and when content captures that and delivers it to the right audience. With social learning, that ratio is instant because people share information in real-time.

Another reason why social learning platforms are the future of continued education is their ability to decentralize knowledge. With our world moving faster and faster, we cannot allow knowledge to remain the property of central institutions like universities. Through social learning, we decentralize information by learning from each other.

In addition, social learning platforms make knowledge available to everyone. Unfortunately, most university degrees are only available to the people who can afford them or are willing to take on a lifetime of debt. According to data insights on debt incurred from seeking higher education, even two decades after borrowing money to attend college, the average graduate still owes around $20,000. This should not be the norm.

Finally, social learning utilizes advances at the forefront of consumer technology. Many companies offer learning on woefully outdated customer relationship management (CRM) platforms employing 20 or 30-year-old technology.

Recent statistics reveal that Americans spend, on average, 5.4 hours on their phones each day. People aren’t assigned to spend time on social media or even offered incentives; they do it because it offers them a chance to connect with others and engage with the world around them.

Social learning platforms incorporate the elements people love about consumer technology — such as personalization, discussion forums, video-sharing, gamification, and AI recommendation engines — and use them to engage employees in enterprise learning.

Social learning platforms leverage human connection to keep employees engaged

Social media platforms are the future of learning because they get employees excited about sharing their expertise and learning with their colleagues. When Cisco adopted social learning, for example, the company reported 98% employee adoption after one year, and its employees generated 80% of the platform’s content through social interaction.

Social learning platforms engage employees with the interactive tools so popular on social media. Discussions, comments, and polls offer people a voice, while feeds and notifications keep them involved in real-time conversations. These platforms provide spaces where employees connect, share knowledge, and become engaged in their work. They answer questions from coworkers who need help and collaborate with colleagues with similar career goals. The more people who engage on the platform, the more valuable the platform becomes.

Social learning platforms deliver relevant learning

Social learning platforms empower organizations to make learning relevant. For example, leadership is able to better curate the content their employees learn by choosing specific modules or lessons that address the challenges they are facing at the moment. They may also create their own instruction that is relevant to their specific organization.

Additionally, social learning focuses on the needs of individual learners by engaging employees with content, tools, and resources based on the goals they list in their profiles. Everyone encounters a highly personal learning path because the platforms’ AI algorithms recommend learning opportunities specific to each user’s profile and past interaction with the content.

Relevant social learning proves remarkably effective. For example, when Comcast employed social learning on guided sales training, their retail specialists achieved a 40% increase in productivity and a 60% increase in sales.

Social learning platforms keep learning convenient

Today’s employees are extremely busy, but the “bite-sized” content on social learning platforms is powerful, concise, and easy to digest. This format allows employees to tackle training at their own pace.

Social learning platforms are also mobile-friendly and easy to use on any device. Instead of being restricted to learning at their desks, employees can access information anytime and anywhere.

Social learning platforms offer the world an entirely different way to learn and approach the process of credentialing. These platforms provide higher engagement with content, and real-time application of workplace knowledge compared to the learning management systems businesses have used for the past 50 years, leading to increased adoption by employees as a result. All we have to do is shift the ways we’ve historically approached learning to better reflect how we naturally consume content today.
