Scammers target Turkey-Syria earthquake: How to spot a fake appeal

Reading Time: 3 mins

Scammers target Turkey-Syria Earthquake appeal: How to spot a fake appeal

Sadly, scammers will always take advantage of global events, especially when natural disaster or war has occurred. They use people’s good will to profit from heartbreak and suffering. Although it may seem a sickening thing to do for most of us, there are cruel people out there.

Currently, fraudsters are latching onto the devastation of Turkey-Syria earthquake to trick people into donating to fake appeals.

The scams often claim to be raising money for survivors and those in need, however the money is funnelled away from real charities helping people, and putting the cash into their own pockets.

The disasters have killed more than 35,000 people, with thousands of survivors left without heat, water, food, their homes and their loved ones. That is why it’s imperative to make sure you are donating to a real cause, so financial aid can be used honestly.

Here are some of the scams to look out for and how to spot a real appeal.

Twitter

Social media platforms can be used for good when raising money, as large audiences can be reached instantly. However, they can also be used to exploit tragedy, with fraudsters quick to con people.

On Twitter in particular, people are sharing images of the devastation, with links to cryptocurrency wallets. The emotive images, alongside text asking for donations, could be a trap.

According to the BBC, many of the images are not even real, with multiple images having been generated by AI, particularly pictures of firemen and other emergency service people holding young children as if they have been rescued. This AI-generated content makes it easy for people to appeal for money, without using photos directly from the event.

Some of these Twitter accounts have been spamming their pages with links to crypto wallets and PayPal. Many of the links were found to have been used on twitter during times of devastation previously, suggesting the scammers are using the same links for different world events, claiming they are for a specific cause.

PayPal

Many Twitter users are also directing people to donate to the cause directly through PayPal. Scammers are creating fake fundraising accounts with links to PayPal accounts, which often turn out to be their own personal PayPal accounts.

Some PayPal fundraisers have raised hundreds in donations already. It is key to notice whether the fundraising page themselves has donated to the cause – if so, this could be to make the account to be legitimate.

It is imperative to note that PayPal has not operated in Turkey since 2016, and any accounts claiming to be in Turkey are likely not authentic.

TikTok

Video-sharing platform TikTok is one of the most downloaded and used apps across the globe. During a TikTok Live, a real-time, live video in which content creators can interact with their followers, they can make money buy receiving gifts from viewers.

However, this is being used by con artists, who are looping videos of the devastation and news clips covering the events and asking for donations. This is just another way scammers are using emotive visual imagery to get people to hand over their money.

Some videos even consist of images from the recent earthquakes – well, so you’d believe. The BBC conducted a reverse-image search and found one of the images was first shared on Twitter in 2018.

turkey-stria earthquake donate

How to donate safely

Although there are cruel people out there trying to profit from disasters through fake relief pages and fundraisers, this shouldn’t stop you from donating to a real charity or fundraiser, should you wish to help.

It is important you look up charities before donating to them, particularly smaller or lesser-known ones. You can search the UK charity register. If you suspect a scam or uncover what you believe to be fraudulent activity, report it to Action Fraud and to the social media platform so they can remove it.

Be aware upsetting and distressing images, videos, sounds and language are used to encourage donations. Take a step back before donating and do your research. Do not rush into anything.

If you choose to donate to a charity or to the governments of the countries affected, research them directly. There are many fake social media accounts claiming to be associated with different charities and organisations – donating directly can avoid your money going into a scammers pocket.

If someone calls you asking you to donate, ask lots of questions. A genuine charity or organisation will be more than happy to answer any questions you have and take the time to go through your concerns. If a caller seems impatient and eager to get your donation, hang up. Always hang up if you are unsure.

You can find other ways to help the Turkey-Syria earthquake relief via the government website. Click here.

Get Paid For Bedtime Reading

Reading Time: 2 mins

Make money reading, Sounds like another dream job time: would you like to earn £1,000 to read for 30 minutes before bed each night?

In an attempt to find out how reading can impact sleep, experts are offering a grand to one lucky applicant. All you have to do is spend a month reading before going to bed, and then spend another month drifting off without the help of a book.

A free sleep-tracking device will be provided to track the differences to determine whether reading before bed has a positive or negative impact on sleep quality. The fully-remote job has been listed by Get Laid Beds, who are on the hunt for someone who will report to the team on how books improved or diminished their sleep.

Alongside the data gathered from the sleep tracker, the candidate will be asked to fill out a form at the end of the experiment detailing their own thoughts on how reading affected their sleep.

Sleep expert Dr Daisy Sharer says, “There is a wide held belief that switching off screens and picking up a book as we wind down before bed has a significant impact on our ability to sleep.

“This experiment wants to go slightly further to assess exactly how long someone should read before bed, what they should read as well as directly comparing what happens if we choose to do the opposite and not read at all before bed.

“The resulting data should give us a good indication of what measures, when it comes to reading, people should take if they struggle to get consistently good sleep at night.”

How to apply to make money reading

get paid to read

The candidate must be 18, be eligible to work in the UK and answer some questions about their favourite books on the Get Laid Beds application form. The application is currently open and the deadline for applications closes at midnight on 10th March, 2023.

The role will be remote and carried out at home. Candidates can choose any book from any genre and will be prompted to send through images of the books they are reading to include in the findings.

Helena Young, Marketing Executive at Get Laid Beds, comments, “We loved seeing the results from our previous survey, but we’re even more excited to put the results of the survey to the test. We want to see if reading before bed really does give us a better night’s sleep, and whether reading means we drift off quicker.”

A previous survey by Get Laid Beds has shown that reading is the most effective ritual to do before bed – over taking a walk, meditating or making yourself a cuppa – to get the best night’s sleep.

If you think this is the role for you and you dream of being able to make money reading, you can apply on the company website.

If you like this…

Then how about getting paid for your own story? MoneyMagpie are looking for people’s stories here.

How to Create Engaging Promotional Videos

Home Business Magazine Online

It’s no secret that video production is a growing industry in the marketing space. As so many new platforms arise, the need for video content is higher than ever before. In fact, recent studies indicate that 91% of businesses use video as a marketing tool — the highest figure since records began!

There are many ways you can utilise videos as part of your content marketing strategy. However, promotional videos are typically the most popular. These videos are used to promote specific things and are often seen on television or through online ads. If your promo video is successful, it can drive so many new leads to your business.

This begs the question, how do you create engaging promotional videos? It’s not as challenging as you might think, and here are some steps to follow that’ll help you get started:

Step 1: Set a goal

What’s the purpose of your promotional video? Do you want to increase sales of a specific product? Are you hoping to generate more leads? Is the aim to boost your conversion rate?

Realistically, the goal depends on the business. But, it’s crucial to figure this out as the entire production will focus on this goal.

Step 2: Grab the viewer’s attention

Once you have your goal, you can find something to grab the viewer’s attention. For example, if your aim is to sell a product, you need to make a promo video all about the benefits of that product. Make it specific to the audience; focus on the key features or elements of the product and why they will benefit from it.

The trick here is to make the viewer feel something about your product/service/brand. Conduct market research to understand the main pain points of your target audience. Shine a light on them in your promo videos and you’re bound to see more engagement as they notice you’re providing possible solutions to issues that have been on their mind for ages.

Step 3: Make things obvious

Many promotional videos fail because the company is too vague about everything. Viewers watch the short clip and have absolutely no idea what’s going on or what’s being promoted. To keep engagement alive, you must stay on track and make things glaringly obvious. Everyone should understand what’s being promoted within seconds, rather than having no idea.

Step 4: Keep it short and sweet

This sort of blends in with the previous point, but it’s important to keep your promo videos short and sweet. Obviously, the exact time will depend on what platforms you’re using. For traditional TV advertising, anywhere between 30-60 seconds is ideal — longer than this and you run the risk of losing people’s attention.

For social media promo videos, you may want to keep them as short as 15 seconds. The main thing to remember is that promotional videos shouldn’t be excessively long. People have short attention spans and your message will be ignored if it goes on for ages.

Step 5: Work with a professional video production agency

Lastly, you can guarantee an engaging video if you opt for promotional video services from a professional video production agency. They are perfectly placed to help you as you embark on this journey. Working with a professional team ensures you get excellent production that makes your videos stand out. They also know the perfect duration for promo videos based on which platforms they’ll be placed on. Effectively, you have someone guiding you through all of these five steps to make sure all of the boxes are ticked.

And there you have it; this is how you create engaging promotional videos that’ll help you reach your initial goals!

A Short Guide to Chatbot Training Dataset

Home Business Magazine Online

They say that when people want to find an easier way to do things, they can do it. The old ways of doing things are going to take more time. This is not acceptable anymore in the fast-paced world that we live in.

Businesses are always making an effort to do things that will please their customers. They need to show customers why they should be chosen over all the competition. Using chatbots can help make online customer service less tedious for employees.

What Is Chatbot Dataset?

data

The chatbot dataset is not going to be effective without Artificial Intelligence or AI. AI is becoming more advanced so it’s normal that better artificial intelligence datasets are also being created.

Chatbots are computer programs that will do the tasks of customer service representatives. They can carry on human conversations to answer people’s inquiries and concerns in a shorter amount of time.

Imagine if you have customer service representatives that will only work during office hours. They will answer your customers’ inquiries during those hours. The moment that they get out of the office, people’s questions will be ignored. This can be enough to make customers feel that the company is making them feel unimportant.

They may choose to purchase similar products from other companies instead. They may also be encouraged to try the services of your competitors. Utilizing a chatbot training dataset can help solve this problem.

Why Is Dataset Annotation Important?

Dataset annotation is considered to be a tedious process. Yet, its importance is being more felt by companies from different parts of the world. This process involves collecting all types of relevant data, annotating them, and letting machines reach their best versions. Machines that are properly trained with the right dataset can provide consistent and high-quality outputs.

AI Chatbot Training Benefits

Some business owners feel that investing in the training dataset for chatbot is going to make them lose money. This can be considered an investment because of the benefits that it can provide in the years to come.

  • 24/7 Availability – People can ask questions anytime and expect a response from your company. It is bound to make any customer feel more important, which can build a better rapport between you and the customer.
  • Customer Engagement Is Increased – Chatbots are going to answer inquiries faster than sending emails. The better the engagement, the better that customers are going to view your company.
  • Improve Marketing and Sales – Chatbots can also be used for some of the campaigns done on social media. This will help them come up with leads and seek out customers that are more likely to interact with your company.
  • Reduce Overall Costs – Maintaining your business will require a lot of hard work. It will also require a lot of money. Having an ML engineer improve chatbots will ensure that you can provide the customer service that your customers expect from you without having to increase the amount that you have to pay.

The better chatbots are trained with the use of proper dataset annotation, the more accurate they will be.

How Are Chatbots Manually Trained with a Chatbot Training Dataset?

Manually training a chatbot is like having a child. The things that the chatbot can offer will depend on the type of care that you can provide for it. You need to hire the best data annotators that can do proper training.

  1. Understand the needs of the users. What are the things that the user would like to be helped with? The clearer this is, the easier it will be to find the right type of data to use. The data will be used to manually train the chatbot.
  2. Build the horizontal coverage. This will contain the usual questions and inquiries that people might have. You will learn some of the valuable queries that people want to know about.
  3. Do some intent clustering. Some intents are already placed on your datasets. You may also have new intents that need to be placed on the dataset. The goal is to maximize the understanding of your chatbot with the given data.
  4. Start chatbot training. You will need the help of a machine learning developer for this purpose. The dataset should be improved until it reaches an accuracy of 85%. This means that it will be able to understand 85% of the data that you will feed to it.
  5. Create the chatbot. Do not be discouraged if your first chatbot is not as accurate as you want it to be. The remote machine learning developer needs to do some trial and error before you will become satisfied with how the machine will handle questions and inquiries.
  6. Continue to train the chatbot. This is going to be an ongoing process because there are always changes that you need to make. The trends are always going to change. You may come up with things that can help your customers more.

The important key to remember is to always keep the chatbot as accurate as possible. The accuracy level should not go down below 85%.

Conclusion

Consistency is always the key to training the chatbot properly. A chatbot dataset is only as good as the developer and the trainer. This is why you need to hire the right people who will provide the training that the chatbot needs.

Specialist vs. Generalist: Who Is Thriving?

Home Business Magazine Online

The world has about 3.32 billion employed people today. While we can’t say what exact positions they hold or in what capacities they work, we know one thing for sure. Some of them are generalists, and some are specialists.

Companies have different expectations of their workers. Some require laser-focused abilities in specific fields, while others prefer comprehensive knowledge and skills.

So, who wins the toss-up between specialists and generalists? Is there even a comparison? Let’s dive in.

What Does a Specialist Do?

A specialist has spent a lot of time honing their expertise in a particular field. They have usually completed advanced studies, training, and experience in their chosen area of focus. When working in a company, they are often the go-to resource for any subject that falls under their specialty.

Advantages of Being a Specialist

Specialists invest significant time, energy, and money to attain their high level of expertise. This sets them up for several advantages reserved only for professionals of their caliber.

Higher Compensation

This is possibly the most obvious perk of being a specialist in the corporate world. It often comes with significantly higher compensation than anyone with lower qualifications.

Less Competition

Fewer people have the will to take on the challenge of becoming a specialist because of the massive amount of work that goes into it. Hence, specialists are relatively few, which means fewer people compete for their positions.

Opportunities to Become a Thought Leader

Specialists are more than just trusted resources in the workplace. Their influence can go far beyond.

With their proven proficiency, they can become influencers who help shape the future of industries.

What Does a Generalist Do?

Generalists are people who have attained a broad range of knowledge and skills. They can work in several capacities within a company, handling different types of tasks from time to time. Unlike specialists, they do not restrict themselves to any single job description. They are adventurous people who like to acquire diverse experiences and collect lessons from them. Examples of a generalist would be a doctor, organic tea tree oil farmer, and veterinarian.

Advantages of Being a Generalist

Just like a specialist, a generalist also enjoys unique advantages. They may not have one single area of expertise, but their value lies in their ability to take on any task.

Career Flexibility

One of the most natural benefits of being a generalist is career flexibility. Because of their multi-competencies, these versatile experts can thrive wherever opportunities take them.

Departmental Connections

With varied capabilities, a generalist usually works with people from different departments within a company. It also means more chances to establish connections everywhere.

Upper-Management Opportunities

Upper-management positions usually call for the ability to oversee multiple areas of operations. Generalists are ideally suited to these roles as “specialists” of the generality of things.

Specialists vs. Generalists: What’s the Verdict?

Understanding the roles of specialists and generalists makes it easy to see that there’s no contest between the two. Companies need both! Specialists provide the depths that establish them as authorities in their fields. On the other hand, generalists supply the widths that allow them to stretch their clout.

With too many specialists, an organization can implode upon itself; with too many generalists, it can dilute its market influence. As always, balance makes all the crucial difference.

Make £300 before the weekend with these money making opportunities.
It is our mission to help readers make, save and manage money. That’s why we love to tell you about money-making opportunities we hear about. A good friend of MoneyMagpie sent us two opportunities to make some good money this week.
Mel is a journalist who is undertaking two investigative pieces and needs people to speak with this week. Find out more about the opportunities below.

ARE YOU STAYING WITH YOUR PARTNER FOR FINANCIAL REASONS?

Here is what Mel says:
“I’m a journalist working on a sensitive feature for a national newspaper about UK women who are staying with their partner for financial reasons. It’s not that you’re extremely unhappy or anything bad has happened, just that without any financial constraints you might have decided to part ways as you suspect you’d be happier apart and moving on to pastures new.
“I would need you to be identified for the article and to provide photographs and probably need a comment from your other half acknowledging it too. I am more than happy to read the article back to you prior to publication.
“You would be paid £300. If this is you and you’d be happy to appear in a tabloid newspaper please do email me on mel.fallowfield@btinternet.com.”

did you cheat on your partner after watching a rom-com?

Here is what Mel says:
URGENT….did you cheat on your partner after watching a rom-com?
I’m looking for a UK woman to be interviewed today (15 February 2023) about how watching a rom-com made you deeply dissatisfied with your relationship and caused you to cheat or leave. Perhaps it made you realise how stale your relationship had become, or perhaps someone cheated in a film and that made you want to do it. Perhaps you just craved more romance in your life.
It doesn’t need to be in your current relationship – could have happened in the past. If this is you and you’re happy to be appear in a tabloid newspaper with a photograph please do email me on mel.fallowfield@btinternet.com. I will read the article back prior to publication and you will be paid £200.
If either of these money-makers appeal to you, contact Mel at mel.fallowfield@btinternet.com.

Google publishes new link best practices

Google has published a new link best practices in their SEO and search developer documentation. Originally it was a document about how to create crawlable links, but the document has been to include not just how to make links crawlable but also:

  • Anchor text placements
  • How to write good anchor text
  • Internal links within your content
  • External links from other sites

The first section is very similar to the original document, which you can see on the Wayback Machine. The new document now reads, “Generally, Google can only crawl your link if it’s an <a> HTML element (also known as anchor element) with an href attribute. Most links in other formats won’t be parsed and extracted by Google’s crawlers. Google can’t reliably extract URLs from <a> elements that don’t have an href attribute or other tags that perform as links because of script events. Here are examples of links that Google can and can’t parse:”

Anchor text placement

Google said, “Anchor text (also known as link text) is the visible text of a link. This text tells people and Google something about the page you’re linking to. Place anchor text between <a> elements that Google can crawl.”

Google also provides some examples of good and bad written placement anchor text.

Writing anchor text

This is another new section where Google wrote, “Good anchor text is descriptive, reasonably concise, and relevant to the page that it’s on and to the page it links to. It provides context for the link, and sets the expectation for your readers. The better your anchor text, the easier it is for people to navigate your site and for Google to understand what the page you’re linking to is about.”

Google also provides some examples of good and bad written anchor text.

Internal links

Google notes that there is no specific number of links you need and writes, “You may usually think about linking in terms of pointing to external websites, but paying more attention to the anchor text used for internal links can help both people and Google make sense of your site more easily and find other pages on your site. Every page you care about should have a link from at least one other page on your site. Think about what other resources on your site could help your readers understand a given page on your site, and link to those pages in context.”

External links

Google talks about the trust factor of links, how sites who link to you can do so, using the nofollow for spammy links and what about paid links.

Google wrote, “Linking to other sites isn’t something to be scared of; in fact, using external links can help establish trustworthiness (for example, citing your sources). Link out to external sites when it makes sense, and provide context to your readers about what they can expect.”

Why we care

SEOs are obsessed with links, and rightfully so, they are an important ranking factor for most modern search engines. So anything Google publishes on the topic should be read by SEOs for them to make decisions about how to manage their link building and management practices.
