Uber ads are coming, and they’re already raising privacy concerns

Ubers’ new journey ads will be shown in the Uber app at least three times during the riders’ journey. The new feature will let brands place ads using data drawn from riders’ travel history and their precise geographic destinations, according to Uber. In an example from The Wall Street Journal, if a user books an Uber to a specific retailer, cinema or airport, for example, a company could buy ads centered on that location.

How the new ads will work. Though not available globally yet, Uber is testing the ads with a few brands at launch. The new product will also let brands sponsor an entire trip, starting with when a rider first calls a car. The ad spots will be sold on a per-trip basis instead of digital advertising’s common pricing by consumer impression, let brands show a user different ads at three points in the user’s trip: while waiting for a car, while riding in the car and upon reaching the destination.

The rider can also conduct transactions, such as clicking the ad to buy a product without leaving the Uber app, said Mark Grether, general manager of Uber Advertising. Separate pilot programs in the U.S. and India will also include ads on in-car tablets, he said.

Privacy concerns. It’s not news to anyone that the US has been facing abortion rights issues. With Uber’s new ad targeting products based on riders’ trip history, we have to wonder what this means for sensitive situations such as a rider who has taken a trip to an abortion provider.

Although this does raise concerns, platforms such as Google, Meta, and Simpli.fi have been tracking users’ locations for many years. The FTC even sued data broker Kachava Inc. this past August claiming that the broker was selling data that tracks people at sensitive locations such as reproductive clinics and places of worship.

According to The Wall Street Journal article, Uber’s advertising policy forbids targeting users by factors such as race, religion or sexual orientation, and it also prohibits basing ad targeting on certain types of destinations, including government buildings, hospitals and reproductive-health centers.

What Uber says. An Uber spokeswoman said the company doesn’t share individual users’ data with advertisers. The data it does share is aggregated information or data related to ad-campaign performance, she said. Users can opt-out of targeted ads on the Uber app at any time, said Grether.

Why we care. Additional ad platforms and placements are usually good news for advertisers and brands. Ad space is expensive and competitive, so when a new player enters the chat, brands typically win, at least for a little while.

Prime Minister Liz Truss has stepped down as the leader of the Conservative Party and consequently, resigned from her position as UK prime minister. She announced her resignation in a statement outside Downing Street this afternoon, 20th October 2022.

In her statement, she told viewers she could not deliver on the mandate on which she was elected as the Tory leader just weeks ago. She told reporters she had notified His Majesty King Charles of her decision.

The unprecedented chaos seen within the government in recent weeks has led to this very moment. In the 45 days since winning her campaign for prime minister, beating rival Rishi Sunak, there have been moments which will be remembered for many years to come, going down in history as one of the most uncertain periods seen in parliament.

“I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability,” she said as the opening line of her statement. Truss has seen turmoil since the mini-budget announced last month, which rocked markets and caused uproar amongst the public. Her resignation from office makes her the shortest serving prime minister the UK has ever seen.

It seems her fate may have been sealed since the mini-budget, after asking Kwasi Kwarteng to step down as chancellor, closely followed by the foreign secretary stepping down on Wednesday.

Today, Liz Truss met with 1922 Committee chairman Sir Graham Brady to discuss her decision, A Conservative leadership election will be completed within the coming week, she announced. She will remain as prime minister until a successor has been chosen. The chosen prime minister will be the third of the year.

Labour leader Keir Starmer has called for an immediate general election after Liz Truss’ resignation announcement today. “The Conservative Party has shown it no longer has a mandate to govern,” he said. “We must have a chance at a fresh start. We need a general election – now,” he continued.

Liz Truss’ full resignation speech confirming her departure from office:

“I came into office at a time of great economic and international instability. Families and businesses were worried about how to pay their bills. Putin’s illegal war in Ukraine threatens the security of our whole continent. And our country has been held back for too long by low economic growth.

“I was elected by the Conservative party with a mandate to change this. We delivered on energy bills and on cutting national insurance. And we set out a vision for a low tax high growth economy that would take advantage of the freedoms of Brexit.

“I recognise though, given the situation, I cannot deliver the mandate on which I was elected by the Conservative Party. I have therefore spoken to His Majesty the King to notify him that I am resigning as leader of the Conservative Party.

“This morning I met the chairman of the 1922 Committee, Sir Graham Brady. We’ve agreed that there will be a leadership election to be completed within the next week.

“This will ensure that we remain on a path to deliver our fiscal plans and maintain our country’s economic stability and national security. I will remain as prime minister until a successor has been chosen. Thank you.”

So how do we save money and run our homes cost-effectively, ask the experts at Which? who have done the research on dozens of websites to see where to get the best bargains.

Danielle Richardson, Which? Money Expert, says, “As autumn begins, many of us will be scrolling through online shops for winter wardrobe essentials, or even making a head start on Christmas shopping. No matter what you are in the market for, there are ways to keep costs down and earn money as you shop.

“It’s always worth checking a few retailers to make sure you have the best price, as well as searching for discount codes – you can often sign up to retailers’ mailing lists for exclusive offers. You could also see if the item you want to buy is available second-hand- it will often be the fraction of the price of buying brand new.”

Some ways you can look to save money on everyday things:

SPEND TIME BEFORE YOU SPEND MONEY

Before you spend, check multiple shops and sites such as Google Shopping, PriceRunner, PriceSpy, and, for Amazon products, CamelCamelCamel. First of all, narrow down the item or model you’re searching for, and hone your search on those sites. The more specific you are, the more eagle-eyed you’ll be when a bargain pops up.

Check the sales sections too, as you can see whether the retailer has an app or scheme you can sign up to, with many offering early access to sales, or specific sales stock deals: Zara does this, for example.

DISCOUNT CODES & MAILING LISTS

On the subject of sales codes, make sure to check the terms and conditions using browser extensions like and VoucherCodes DealFinder, which automatically search for relevant vouchers which you can add to your shop and get discounted at checkout.

Sign up to retailers’ mailing lists for exclusive discounts like introductory offers and personalised codes – these are usually set to appear in your inbox once you start filling up your shopping cart. Tip: you could create a secondary email account to deal with these emails, and unsubscribe when you’re done.

CREDIT AND DEBIT CARDS

Cashback credit or debit cards usually offer between 0.25 and 5 per cent on purchases: American Express Platinum Cashback and Platinum Cashback Everyday credit cards offer the highest cashback rates at the moment, and the Lloyds Bank Cashback Credit Card and Santander All-in-One Credit Card do charge a small fee (£3) so make sure you’re aware of those small costs as they mount up: and always pay your credit card off in full every month to avoid high interest charges.

Chase have a current account offering 1 per cent cashback for the first 12 months. It is also worth checking for offers with your existing card providers – you might be eligible for special rewards.

GO SECOND-HAND

Buying second-hand can afford you pre-used clothing, laptops, games consoles, furniture and home products. Some sellers are getting rid of brand new unwanted gifts, so It is worth looking on online marketplaces like eBay and Amazon Refurbished, or apps such as Depop and Vinted. You can also sell your old clothes online to make up for the cost of buying new ones.

RETURNS

The Consumer Contracts Regulations give you 14 days to choose whether you want a full purchase price refund but be aware that you may not get delivery charges refunded, and returns may not be free. Return policies can change too, by adding fees where previously there weren’t any. If an item is faulty or not as described though, under the Consumer Rights Act, you are legally entitled to a full refund within 30 days of receipt, including delivery or return costs.

DISPLAY ITEM DISCOUNTS

Which? found big brands including Birkenstock, Adidas and Timberland were getting rid of display or slightly damaged items for big discounts that may suit customers. Office Offcuts sells ‘end of line, ex-display and last pairs of shoes’, and Schuh Imperfects says shoes may have ‘scuffs, discoloration, and other individual quirks’.

You can also buy ex-display furnishings, even kitchens and bathrooms for massive discounts if they’re not up to the shop’s sales standards. In the case of larger items, make sure to check them out in person before you buy, because the sellers are not necessarily going to list every defect in exact detail: but it might pass muster if you see it with your own eyes.

SPEND AND SAVE

Furthermore, cashback is available on purchases from sites such as and TopCashback. Retailers may offer cashback as a fixed amount or a percentage of the purchase, but you will need to use the link on the individual cashback site for your purchase to count.
