13 essential SEO skills you need to succeed

What is the greatest skill in SEO?

If you believe this tweet, it’s patience.

Although patience is a great answer, I would never say there is a “greatest” SEO skill.

Why?

Because SEO requires various hard skills (things you can learn or be taught) and soft skills (how you work and interact with others) to succeed.

As I’ve always found, asking many SEO professionals one question will get a wide variety of opinions. So I asked several SEO professionals what they would consider the greatest skill in SEO.

Here’s what they told me.

1. Research and troubleshooting

Dave Davies, Lead SEO, Weights & Biases

  • “As far as greatest skills go, I have to go with the stock SEO answer: It depends. In this case, though, it really does.

If the practitioner is content-focused, then writing skills combined with strong research abilities (both SEO and subject-based) would definitely top my list. If the practitioner is a technical SEO, then the most important skills skew to technical knowledge – but even that branches out.

If they work as a contractor, then they likely need to have a broad understanding of different tech and a strong ability to research specifics and work with developers. If they’re an in-house SEO or platform-specific contractor, then they would likely need a stronger grasp of a specific stack, and possibly deployment capabilities.

The one skill that every SEO needs is research and troubleshooting capabilities. If they can’t do that, their career will be short. Thankfully, if you’re reading this, you do your research.”

2. Critical thinking

Dan Taylor, Head of Technical SEO, SALT.agency

  • “For me, one of the greater skills for SEO professionals to develop is critical thinking. The SEO ecosystem is awash with noise and claims, with varying levels of data and anecdotal evidence to support them. Far too often, much of this content and advice is taken verbatim and applied to own situations without a second thought, with the expectation that the implementation will yield the same results.

A common example in SEO happens when working with a client (and other stakeholders) on a website redesign. More often than not, the designs, and some proposed technical implementations, will be taken from other websites without considering the ‘other’ factors that go into how a website ranks. Just because eBay, the BBC, Amazon, etc. do X, doesn’t mean X will work for Bob’s Hardware or Bob’s Finance Co.

With critical thinking, SEOs should read a study online, see the inputs and outcomes, and then intentionally find other studies that contradict these results – and then form their own opinions and influence their strategies with application to the current client scenario.”

John McAlpin, Director of SEO Strategy, Cardinal Digital Marketing

  • “Most experienced SEO professionals will likely say that the most important skill is a soft skill. I’d say that’s pretty spot-on.

In my opinion, the most important SEO skill is critical thinking. Not everything in SEO is black and white. There’s always a middle ground. It takes real detective skills to find the answers.”

3. Problem-solving

Elmer Boutin, VP of Operations, WrightIMC

  • “Problem-solving and the ability to see the big picture. We often get so bogged down in the minutia of various SEO tasks that we miss the big picture of what’s going on between the website, the search engines, the potential visitors, and the business the website represents.

Taking a step back and looking at things from end to end can help us solve problems more than fretting over things like meta description length or figuring out the optimum time to release a blog post.”

Corey Morris, Chief Strategy Officer, Voltage

  • “The greatest skill in SEO is problem-solving. It rarely goes according to plan.

Adapting, finding new ways, and exploring all resources for technical, on-page, IT, UX and off-page factors are all critical to success. Using a checklist, and checking boxes, won’t get you far.”

4. Experimenting

Himani Kankaria, Founder, Missive Digital

  • “The greatest skill in SEO is experimenting. One thing that works for one business or industry is not necessarily what would work for another. You cannot judge that without testing.

Also, most of the projects have different audience buying and browsing perspectives, technologies for the website UX, content, how we build the navigation, etc. So you need to keep checking what works for your website, client, or employer because SEO is ever-evolving, and one cannot learn or unlearn new or outdated things without experimenting. Sometimes, we learn from someone else’s experiments, so experimenting is a super duper skill in SEO.”

5. Business acumen

Trond Lyngbø, Founder, Search Planet

  • “As an SEO consultant specializing in enterprise-level SEO consulting for enterprise ecommerce companies and omnichannel retailers, I value SEO strategies that are not SEO strategies for Google, but SEO for business performance results, productivity and economic growth.

A solid understanding of business, business processes, workflow automation and cross-functional alignment is worth gold in this segment.”

Connie Chen, SEO Specialist, Moving Traffic Media

  • “Commercial awareness (ROI) and soft skills because you need to be able to translate the work that you’re doing into measurable impact for your stakeholders. You must also know how to distill technical ideas into concepts that make sense to those stakeholders.”

6. Adaptability

Maria White, Head of SEO, Kurt Geiger

  • “SEO is a spectrum. As such, it is hard to dominate all skills (Technical, Data, Content, PR, Story Telling, Management and more). These skills change as Google and search evolve. Every Google algorithm shapes the way we do SEO.

Given that the only constant is change, then the best skill to succeed is the ability to adapt. Changes are the norm when working in an agency: new clients, bigger clients, various budgets, fast pace and more. If, along with that, we add constant changes to the algorithm that involves changing the way we work, then here is where only those with the ability to adapt will not only survive but they will thrive.”

Holly Miller Anderson, Lead SEO Product Manager, Under Armour

  • “The greatest skill in SEO is adaptability. SEO is a learned skill from technical to content. But adaptability is a choice.”

7. Communication

Casey Markee, Owner, Media Wyse

  • “SEO requires an ability to clearly explain concepts and objectives, usually in many different ways, to many different people. Your ability to do so, professionally and emotionlessly, is a big part of your daily success.”

8. Ability to learn

Chris Silver Smith, President, Argent Media

  • “The greatest skill in SEO is the ability to learn. One constant in SEO is change – one must learn new things and flex to adapt to new ways constantly.”

9. Persistence

Ludwig Makhyan, Co-founder, MAZELESS

  • “Persistence is the greatest skill, where you don’t get disappointed by failures and continue to learn, push to improve, engage with other teams and cooperate for the greater success of the business you represent.”

10. Cross-collaboration

Jon Clark, Managing Partner, Moving Traffic Media

  • “Cross-collaboration is an incredibly valuable skill. SEO is one of the few skills/roles that sits at the crossroads of nearly every department in an organization: design, development, content, UX, PR, marketing, engineering, quality assurance, analytics, and more.”

11. Understanding the user

Mike Grehan, SVP of Corporate Communications, NP Digital

  • “The greatest skill of an SEO is to fully understand the “information need” of an end user. They don’t start their research as a consumer or a B2C customer or B2B, or anything other than a human being trying to solve a problem. Help Google to help them – and Google will surely help you!”

12. Inquisitiveness

Mark Jackson, President and CEO, Vizion Interactive

  • “An inquisitive mind. In SEO,  you can be a technically gifted and super bright person or a content marketing expert, but if you lack an inquisitive mind, you may not be looking at a project from all the possible angles.”

13. Ability to know what matters

Olaf Kopp, Co-founder and Head of SEO, Aufgesang

  • “The greatest skill in SEO is “ranking experience.” You can do a lot in SEO. But only 20% of that ensures 80% of success. Only with enough experience in knowing which tasks are effective, in which case makes the difference between good and average SEOs.”

Joe Devita, Managing Partner, Moving Traffic Media

  • “The ability to stay focused on the optimization signals that matter rather than be distracted by all the noise.”

Richard Wesselt Shares the Seven Core Principles of Community Engagement

Home Business Magazine Online

Community engagement is one of the most important aspects of any successful organization. Experts like Richard Wesselt in Collegeville, PA, understand it allows organizations to build relationships with their customers and stakeholders and helps create a sense of community around the company or product. This article will discuss the seven core principles of community engagement. These principles will help you create a successful community engagement strategy for your business!

Careful Planning Is Required

When it comes to community engagement, planning is essential. Without a plan, it can be challenging to identify goals and objectives or to track progress. Furthermore, without a dream, it can be easy to become reactive instead of proactive, responding to crises instead of taking steps to prevent them. Planning also allows community members to have a say in how resources are used and build trust between those working together. In short, planning is key to effective community engagement.

Active Listening Is Important

To engage with a community, it is important to first listen to what they say. This involves more than just hearing the words spoken – it also means taking the time to understand the needs and wants of the community. Only then can you begin to develop a relationship and build trust. Listening also allows you to identify pain points and potential areas of improvement.

Richard Wesselt says to help you listen more effectively, there are a few tips. Create a safe and welcoming environment where people feel comfortable speaking their minds and encourage open communication by asking questions and allowing people to share their thoughts and feelings freely. Try to avoid making assumptions and instead focus on gathering information. Finally, follow up after listening sessions to show that you value the community’s input.

Respect Must Be Given

When working with a community, it is essential to remember that respect must be given to earn it. This means listening to what community members say, valuing their input, and treating them with courtesy and consideration. It also means avoiding condescension or speaking down to people. Finally, respect also means acknowledging and celebrating the diversity of the community.

Communication Must Be Open

Richard Wesselt says for community engagement to be successful, communication must be open. This means being transparent about your goals, objectives, and plans. It also means being accessible and available to answer questions and address concerns. Furthermore, open communication requires that you provide timely updates and information to the community.

Collaboration Is Crucial

Community engagement is all about working together towards a common goal. This means that collaboration is crucial. The partnership allows different stakeholders to share their expertise and ideas and help create buy-in for new initiatives. Furthermore, it can help build relationships and trust between other groups.

Negotiation Skills Are Important

In any community engagement effort, there will be times when negotiation skills are required. This is because not everyone will always agree on everything. However, it is essential to remember that compromise is vital. You can build relationships, resolve conflicts, and move forward by being willing to negotiate and find common ground.

Patience Is Essential

Working with a community can be a long-term endeavor. This is because change takes time, and it takes time to build trust and relationships. Therefore, it is essential to be patient. Rome wasn’t built in a day, and neither are strong communities. You can create a lasting bond between your organization and the community by being patient and taking the time to nurture relationships.

Why Are These Principles Important?

The seven core principles of community engagement are essential because they provide a framework for successfully engaging with a community. Following these principles, you can create a strategy tailored to your community’s needs and build relationships and trust. Furthermore, these principles can help you avoid common pitfalls and set you up for success.

How to Use These Principles

The seven core principles of community engagement can help you create a successful strategy for working with your community. However, it is essential to remember that each community is unique, and what works in one situation might not work in another. Therefore, it is crucial to tailor your approach to the specific needs and wants of the community you are working with. By doing so, you can create a truly effective plan.

Richard Wesselt says you should also keep these principles in mind as you implement your community engagement strategy. Doing so will help you stay on track and ensure that you respect the community and work collaboratively towards a common goal. Furthermore, you can ensure that your community engagement efforts are genuinely effective by regularly evaluating your progress and making adjustments as needed.

Final Thoughts

The seven core principles of community engagement can help you create a successful strategy for working with your community. However, it is essential to remember that each community is unique, and what works in one situation might not work in another. Therefore, it is crucial to tailor your approach to the specific needs and wants of the community you are working with. By doing so, you can create a truly effective plan.

Over £1,000 lost every year to unused beauty products

Reading Time: 3 mins

Beauty giant Avon have released their latest findings regarding the amount of money we lose every single year from unused beauty products we purchase. According to the research, the average woman spends £1,365 annually on skincare, makeup and toiletries.

However, most admit that around 75% of the products they purchase go partially or completely unused. Those aged 16 to 24 spend the most on cosmetic and beauty products, the study shows. In fact, the average spend for this age group is £300 per year on toiletries and fragrances, £312 on face makeup and £200 on nail products.

1 in 3 of those studied admitted to owning products over five years old, and one quarter said they have multiple products with the same function. This means thousands of pounds are left sitting in bathroom cabinets and drawers every year, unused.

As the cost of living rises rapidly, 80% of women are unwilling to give up cosmetic items to save money. However, 61% did say they are in search of cheaper alternatives. Just over half of those surveyed (52%) said value is something they look for when shopping for beauty items.

Home Business

Avon teamed up with model and author Louise Boyce, to get some top tips on how to be a savvy spender when it comes to your beauty regime. You don’t have to compromise on results in order to save money! Here are Louise’s top tips:

Use multi-functional products

With 1 in 3 of us suggesting we have multiple products with the same function, it could be a good idea to buy products with multiple benefits, instead of lots of different products.

Check your makeup bag regularly

Almost a quarter of women (22%) say they rarely finish products they own. 1 in 3 also say they have products almost half a decade old which they hang onto. Check expiration dates and have a clear out. This will help you see what you have left to work with. Although it is tempting to buy new, try to use up the products you have before buying more. It may also become a personal challenge for you and you can rediscover old favourites you may not have used in a while.

Create your own tinted moisturiser

If you aren’t a fan of full coverage foundation and want to try a tinted moisturiser, why not make your own? Instead of splashing out on yet another product, mix your foundation with your favourite moisturiser to create your very own tinted moisturiser.

Increase the lifespan of your products

If your mascara is a little dry, blast it with the hairdryer for a few seconds to warm it up and reverse the drying. Louise also suggests adding micellar water to smashed powders and eyeshadows to press them back into place.

Have a spare lippy?

If you have lots of unused lipsticks, why not use them in a different way? Doubling up your lipstick as a blusher or an eyeshadow is a great way to use up lipstick. If it’s a shade you aren’t keen on for your lips, give it a go on your cheeks, nose and chin to give yourself a natural, dewy flush.

Get a sample

Many shops offer free samples, you just have to ask! Don’t buy a full-sized version of a product you are unsure you will enjoy and use. This way, you can test the colour, texture, scent, durability and your skin’s tolerance.

Licensed healthcare providers eligible to apply for new YouTube product features

YouTube has just announced that licensed healthcare providers can now apply to make their channels eligible for new health product features – a suite of information resources released last year.

What this means. The health product features previously launched include health source information panels to help viewers identify videos from authoritative sources and health content shelves that highlight videos from these sources when you search for health topics, so people can more easily navigate and evaluate health information online.

Previously, those features have only been available to educational institutions, public health departments, hospitals, and government entities. The new guidelines will make the features available to a wider group of healthcare providers.

How to apply. Eligible healthcare providers can apply starting today using the guidelines below, taken directly from the YouTube blog announcement.

Applicants must have proof of their license, follow best practices for health information sharing as set out by the Council of Medical Specialty Societies, the National Academy of Medicine and the World Health Organization, and have a channel in good standing on YouTube. Full details on eligibility requirements are here.

All channels that apply will be reviewed against these guidelines, and the license of the applying healthcare professional will be verified. In the coming months, eligible channels that have applied through this process will be given a health source information panel that identifies them as a licensed healthcare professional and their videos will appear in relevant search results in health content shelves. Health creators in the US can apply starting October 27th at health.youtube, and we’ll continue to expand availability to other markets and additional medical specialties in the future.

Why we care. YouTube is trying to help people become more informed, engaged and empowered about their health by attempting to create a space where they can find reliable, factual, and informative content from legitimate healthcare providers.

However, not every licensed healthcare provider shares safe, proven, harmless content. Users should still do their due diligence to ensure that the content they are consuming is high quality.

Additionally, advertisers who work with licensed providers should apply for the new features today to ensure their channels have added visibility.

Dimitry Alper Shares International Logistics Trends to Look Forward to in 2022 and 2023

Home Business Magazine Online

The logistics industry is constantly changing and evolving. Experts like Dimitry Alper in Secaucus, NJ, know that as we move into the next few years, there are some exciting international logistics trends to look forward to. Here are a few trends we can expect more of in the next few years.

Cross-Border E-Commerce

Dimitry Alper says one of the biggest trends in international logistics is the continued growth of cross-border e-commerce. Cross-border e-commerce occurs when a consumer buys a product from a seller in another country. This trend has been growing steadily for a few years and shows no signs of slowing down.

There are a few reasons for this trend. First, the global market has become more accessible ― thanks to the internet. It is now easier for consumers to find products they want from sellers worldwide. Second, there are more options for international delivery now than there have ever been before. Consumers are more comfortable buying items from other countries and having items shipped to them directly. This is all thanks to services like Amazon Prime and Alibaba’s Cainiao Network.

We can expect cross-border e-commerce to grow in the next few years as more consumers learn about the benefits and as more logistics companies develop better ways to facilitate cross-border shipments.

Increased Use of Technology

Another trend we can expect to see in international logistics is the increased use of technology. This includes everything from using drones and robots for warehouse operations to using big data and analytics to improve shipping routes. The use of technology in logistics is nothing new. However, we can expect it to become even more commonplace in the next few years as companies seek ways to improve efficiency and cut costs.

Dimitry Alper says one area where we already see an increase in the use of technology is in last-mile delivery, which is the final step in getting a package from point A to point B. Companies are experimenting with drones and robots to make last-mile deliveries to save time and money. We expect companies to adopt these methods as they become more refined and less expensive in the next few years.

Sustainability Initiatives

Another trend that we are starting to see emerge in international logistics is the implementation of sustainability initiatives. More and more companies are beginning to realize that sustainability is not only good for the environment, but it is also good for business. Sustainability initiatives can help reduce costs, improve efficiency, and build goodwill with consumers. We expect to see more companies implementing sustainability initiatives in their operations in the next few years as these initiatives become more mainstream.

Some of the most common sustainability initiatives in logistics include using electric vehicles for deliveries, using green packaging materials, and working with carbon offset programs. We expect to see more companies adopting these initiatives and others in the next few years as they look for ways to reduce their environmental impacts.

Blockchain Technology

We expect to see more companies utilizing blockchain technology in their international logistics operations. Blockchain is a distributed database that allows for secure, transparent, and tamper-proof transactions. This makes it ideal for logistics, where tracking shipments and ensuring security are of the utmost importance.

We are already seeing blockchain being used in some areas of international logistics, such as in tracking food shipments. We expect this trend to continue and expand in the next few years, as more companies realize blockchain technology’s benefits.

The Rise of Electric Vehicles

Lastly, Dimitry Alper says the use of electric vehicles (EVs) is another big trend that we anticipate will significantly affect international logistics in the next few years — especially regarding last-mile delivery. EVs offer some advantages over traditional gasoline-powered vehicles, including lower operating costs, reduced emissions, and improved efficiency. As battery technology continues to evolve, EVs are becoming increasingly affordable and practical for businesses to use — even for long-distance deliveries. There are other less publicized disadvantages of EV’s such as the environmental impacts of battery production and eventual waste management of such discarded batteries, along with a power grid that is not fully capable of supporting a majority based EV infrastructure. However, these are challenges that we hope to overcome in the not too distant future.

Some experts predict EVs could make up as much as 30% of all commercial vehicles by 2030. That is why we believe that EV adoption will continue to increase in the coming years. As a result, it will significantly affect how goods are transported worldwide.

Conclusion

These are just a few trends we expect to see in international logistics in the next few years. As the world becomes increasingly connected, we can expect even more changes and innovations in how goods are transported around the globe.

Cross-border e-commerce, increased use of technology, sustainability initiatives, and the use of EVs are all trends here to stay. Moreover, these trends will only become more prevalent as time goes on. Therefore, if you are in the logistics industry, then keep these trends top of mind as you plan for the future!

Michael Baskin Discusses the Most Stunning Hawaiian Architecture That You Must Visit

Home Business Magazine Online

If you are looking for a unique and unforgettable travel destination, Michael Baskin, Maui Architect in Paia, Hi USA, says to look no further than Hawaii. The tropical paradise is home to some of the most stunning architecture in the world, from ancient temples to modern beachfront resorts. Here are some of the most amazing examples of Hawaiian architecture you must visit.

‘Iolani Palace

For several reasons, the ‘Iolani Palace is a great place to observe Hawaiian architecture. First, it is the only royal palace in the United States . Thus, it is a rare example of this type of architecture. Second, the castle was built in the 19th century, during a time when Hawaiian architecture was undergoing a renaissance. As such, it represents a pivotal moment in the evolution of this style of architecture.

Third, Michael Baskin, Maui Architect, says the palace has been meticulously restored and is now open to the public, making it one of the most accessible examples of Hawaiian architecture. Finally, the palace’s location ― in the heart of Honolulu — makes it easy to visit and explore. These factors make the Iolani Palace an ideal place to learn about and appreciate Hawaiian architecture.

Royal Mausoleum of Hawaii

The Royal Mausoleum of Hawaii is the final resting place of much Hawaiian royalty, including several kings and queens. The mausoleum is a beautiful example of Neo-Gothic architecture, with its soaring spires and elaborate stone carvings. The mausoleum is also significant for its location ― on the grounds of the historic Mauna ʻAla (Royal Hill) cemetery. This makes it one of the most atmospheric examples of Hawaiian architecture, as the graves of Hawaiian royalty surround it.

The Royal Mausoleum is open to the public, so it is simple to go and have a look. Because it is a functioning cemetery, visitors are requested to maintain the privacy of those interred there.

Hānaiakamalama

Hānaiakamalama is a historic building on the island of Oahu that has served several purposes over the years. It began life as a royal residence for Hawaiian royalty. However, it was later converted into a school for Hawaiian children. It has recently been restored and opened to the public as a museum.

Michael Baskin, Maui resident, says the building is significant for its age — dating back to 1837 ― and for its location, nestled in the foothills of the Diamond Head crater. Hānaiakamalama is notable for its architecture, which blends traditional Hawaiian elements with Western influences. The result is a truly unique building that is well worth a visit.

Doris Duke’s Shangri La

Doris Duke was an American heiress and socialite who, in the mid-20th century, built a lavish estate on the island of Oahu. The estate, which she named Shangri La, was designed to be a retreat from the outside world and showcase her Islamic art collection.

The estate is significant for its architecture, which blends traditional Islamic elements with Hawaiian influences. For example, the main house is based on a classic Moroccan palace, but it features details such as tiki torches and lauhala mats (traditional Hawaiian floor mats). This makes Shangri La one of the most exciting and exotic examples of Hawaiian architecture.

Aloha Tower

The Aloha Tower is a Honolulu landmark that was built in 1926. The tower stands ten stories tall and offers stunning views of the city and the harbor. The tower is also notable for its Art Deco design, inspired by the Eiffel Tower in Paris. At one point, the tower was the tallest building in Hawaii and remained one of the most iconic examples of Hawaiian architecture. It served as a beacon for ships entering the harbor for many years, and it is now open to the public as a museum.

The Aloha Tower is accessible to the general public, making it simple to go and see the sights. It may be somewhat congested due to its location in a popular section of downtown Honolulu, especially during peak tourist season.

Liljestrand House

The Liljestrand House is a private residence on the island of Oahu that famed architect Vladimir Ossipoff designed. The house is significant for its use of natural materials, its open-air design, and spectacular ocean views. It is considered one of Hawaii’s finest examples of mid-century modern architecture.

This house is not open to the public, but it can be admired from the street. The Liljestrand House is located in a residential neighborhood, so there is usually not too much foot traffic.

The Hawaii State Capitol Building

The Hawaii State Capitol Building is the seat of state government for the United States Territory of Hawaii. The structure, which was completed in 1969, features an innovative design. It is considered one of the most important examples of Brutalist architecture in Hawaii. Moreover, it is recognized as one of the state’s finest examples of modern architecture.

Michael Baskin, Maui architectural expert, says the Capitol Building is open to the public during regular business hours, making it simple to drop by and look around. Guided visits are also available that allow you to discover more about the history and construction of this building.

The Hawaii Theatre

The Hawaii Theatre is a Honolulu landmark that was built in 1922. The theatre is significant for its architecture, which blends Art Deco and Asian influences. It is one of the finest examples of Hawaiian architecture and has been meticulously restored to its former glory.

The theatre offers a variety of performances throughout the year, making it a great place to catch a show while you are in town. It is also possible to take tours of the theatre. These tours provide opportunities to see backstage areas and learn more about the history of this iconic building.

Final Thoughts

These are some of the most stunning examples of Hawaiian architecture on the islands, discussed by Michael Baskin. So next time you plan a trip to Hawaii, add some of these architectural wonders to your list of places to visit!

‘Ask for Henry’ – the discreet way to get a free meal at Morrison’s

Reading Time: 2 mins

Supermarket Morrison’s has teamed up with family favourite Heinz to help people cope with soaring costs during the cost-of-living crisis. The new initiative offers visitors a discreet, free lunch for those who need it. Simply ask for ‘Henry’ at a Morrison’s café and you will receive a free hot meal. No questions asked!

Inspired by the work of Henry J. Heinz, the founder of Heinz and a well-known philanthropist, the company are pledging over 160,000 meals to people across the UK from today, 26th October 2022. The offer will run until November 6th 2022.

When you ask for ‘Henry’ at one of the 400 Morrison’s cafes across the country, you will be given a free jacket potato and baked beans. The company hopes to feed children up and down the country who are on half term, as well as anyone else in need, no matter your age.

From a young age, Henry J. Heinz would make food in his family kitchen with the aid of his mother, using ingredients picked from their garden. They would then share the food with the local community. Wanting to honour his ‘good heart and kind spirit’, along with his birthday in October, the scheme was created.

Britain is a nation of baked bean lovers, with around 600 million tins of Heinz’s baked beans eating annually. This is around 1.6 million cans per day. If you need a hot, hearty meal, visit your local Morrison’s café and ask for ‘Henry’. It’s as simple as that!

Discreet

Sian Whittle, of Morrisons cafés, said:

“We know that our customers are under real financial pressure at the moment and are therefore pleased to be partnering with Heinz on its “ask for Henry” initiative to offer customers a free jacket potato topped with Beanz.”

Jojo De Noronha, president of northern Europe at Heinz, said:

“Henry brought comfort and goodness to others, not just through his food but his actions.

“We want to honour his good heart and kind spirit by doing what he did best, helping feed people in times of need – and that’s why we’re launching ‘ask for Henry’ with our partner Morrisons on October 26.”

Penalty rail fares to increase by £80

Reading Time: 2 mins

The penalty rail fares charged for travelling without a valid train ticket will increase by £80. The charge, which currently stands at £20, will increase to £100, the government has said.

The Department for Transport (DfT) has said the current fine is not seen as enough of a deterrent for passengers who try to get away without buying a rail ticket. They want to save tax payer’s money, which is currently being used to foot the bill for ticketless passengers.

The new penalty will be issued as a surcharge on top of the price of the ticket for the passenger’s journey, meaning those who do not buy a rail ticket will be charged well over £100 in total. However, the fine will be reduced to £50 if paid within 21 days of issue.

This is the first increase to penalty rail fares in almost 18 years, with the last increase being back in 2005.The laws were passed by Parliament yesterday, 26th October 2022 and will come into effect this coming January.

The change will bring the national penalty to be the same level as Transport for London and Manchester Metrolink. These companies charge £80 and £100 respectively.

It is estimated the evasion of paying correct fares for trains costs train operators an estimated £240 million annually. Saving this money could be used to modernise the railways and help to improve various aspects of people’s journeys.

After the pandemic, it is more important than ever for rail companies to be making a solid profit. This is not only due to lockdowns reducing traveller numbers. Passenger numbers have also dwindled as many people continue to work from home. As well as this, strike action has led to many disruptions this year. Transport businesses are desperate to entice customers back in.

A DfT spokesman said: “We need penalty fares to act as a proper deterrent, and we are putting in place a modern system that will help create a more sustainable railway.”

Fun ways to make money from Halloween

Reading Time: 4 mins

Spooky season is finally upon us. With children excited to dress up in their costumes and devour sweets by the bucket load, adults can often be left out of pocket. But don’t fear! Whether you are a fan of the holiday or not, there are plenty of easy ways to make money from Halloween.

Here are some scarily easy ways to earn a bit of pocket money that could serve you well over the festive season:

Get paid to scare people

Fun ways to make money from Halloween

Do you enjoy playing pranks on family and friends? Revel in the look of momentary terror/shock/horror on their faces as you spring yet another nasty surprise on them?

Well, perhaps it’s time you put that talent to good use and earned some cash while at it. The first way to make money from halloween is to scare people!

Not sure where to start? Draw inspiration from Wrinkles the Clown, a mysterious resident of Naples, Florida in the United States, who – for the fee of a few hundred dollars – will scare the heebie-jeebies out of misbehaving children. He can, of course, also be appointed to perform a range of other pranks but, so far, his most successful gigs have come from parents desperate to discipline their unruly children.

In one case, Wrinkles was caught on CCTV emerging from under the bed of a sleeping little girl. The carefully planned prank was orchestrated by the girl’s parents, who wanted to save the footage and scare her with it whenever she misbehaved.

Another famous case saw Wrinkles appear across the street from a bus stop where a naughty 12-year-old boy with a bad case of Coulrophobia waited for a ride.

Wrinkles’ pranking prowess has even resulted in a documentary about his life.

Sell terrifyingly delicious home-made treats

If you’re a whizz in the kitchen, you can harness those skills to make some unique and delicious Halloween treats.

As people are becoming more aware of their health, as well as the environmental impact of things like discarded sweet wrappers and the like, home-made sweets are making a massive come-back.

With Halloween less than two weeks away, the best way to market your products will probably be word of mouth. Do a post with beautiful photographs of the types of goodies you’ll be making on social media and ask your friends to share. Be sure to include the price, your contact details and what type of delivery methods will work best.

Earn cash as a Halloween make-up artist

Another way to make money from Halloween is to do scary hair and makeup. Halloween is the one event of the year where people really go all out with dressing up for parties. Thing is, not everyone knows how to do this well. So, if you can do a mean cat eye and whip up a glam hairdo in a matter of minutes, you may just have struck gold.

According to Bidvine, the average price hair and makeup artists charge between £60 – £130 (an average of £75) per job. Not bad!

You may, however, want to consider charging a special price for Halloween to get more people interested.

Once again, advertising your services to friends and family, as well as on your social media pages, will be the quickest way to reach a relevant target market.

Make, fix and tailor Halloween costumes

While sewing may seem like second nature to you, some people have never pushed a needle through a piece of fabric, let alone wound a bobbin!

In the run-up to Halloween, you can be sure that those with a tendency toward procrastination will be on the lookout for last-minute costumes.

Take advantage of this by offering a selection of quick-and-easy costumes that people can pre-order. You can offer them for sale or rent them out, depending on what works best for you and your client. Furthermore, you could consider charging a premium fee for custom outfits and special requests.

If you’re not that confident in your sewing skills just yet, you could always test the market by offering alterations and quick fixes for outfits that need some TLC.

Create a haunted house

Fun ways to make money from Halloween

Finally, something for those with a little extra chutzpah and panache! This is one of the most thrilling ways to make money from Halloween.

Become the talk of the town, the hero among your friends and acquaintances, the legend of Halloweens to come, by transforming your home into a truly chilling haunted house.

There are, of course, different levels of scariness when it comes to creating a haunted house. So, start by trying to determine who your target market is. If it’s for the neighbourhood kids, steer clear of anything too disturbing. If, however, your audience is made up of adults with a penchant for horror film aesthetics, you can take things up a good few notches.

Depending on how much effort and money you spent on creating the experience, you can charge an entry fee of anything between £2 and £25.
