Amazon’s ad services revenue rises 26%, bringing in more than $12 billion in Q3

Amazon generated $12.06 billion from its advertising services in the third quarter of 2023.

The figure marks a 26.3% increase from the same period in 2022 – a result significantly better than forecasts predicted by Wall Street.

advertising services

Why we care. Amazon’s exceptional performance serves as a powerful signal that the digital advertising industry is experiencing a robust resurgence following on from the economic downturn. This promising trend should instill confidence among cautious marketers, ultimately rekindling their trust in the sector. As trust is rebuilt, experts anticipate a surge in ad spend during the all important holiday season in Q4.

Exceeding expectations. Financial analysts had predicted that ad revenue would generate $11.6 billion in Q3 – which would have marked a 21% year-on-year increase. However, Amazon’s ad sales surpassed this by $460 million. The segment includes:

  • Sales of advertising services to sellers
  • Vendors
  • Publishers
  • Authors
  • Third parties through programs like sponsored ads, display ads and video advertising.

Ad partners. In the third quarter of this year, Amazon teamed up with a number of publishers and brands to serve ads on their apps and websites for products that are sold via Amazon in the US, including:

  • BuzzFeed
  • Hearst Newspapers
  • Pinterest, Raptive
  • Ziff Davis’ Lifehacker
  • Mashable

The retail giant suggested these collaborations played an important role in its success in Q3.

Leveraging AI. Amazon also attributed its successful third quarter to rolling out new AI capabilities for brands and advertisers. In India, Amazon introduced a generative AI digital assistant to assist small businesses in setting up an online store, offering support with registration, listing, and advertising.

Other AI announcements included Amazon’s Supply Chain, a fully automated service for sellers to efficiently transport products from manufacturers to customers.

What has Amazon said? Andy Jassy, Amazon CEO, described Q3 as another “strong quarter”. He said:

  • “We had a strong third quarter as our cost to serve and speed of delivery in our Stores business took another step forward, our AWS growth continued to stabilize, our Advertising revenue grew robustly, and overall operating income and free cash flow rose significantly.”
  • “The benefits of moving from a single national fulfillment network in the U.S. to eight distinct regions are exceeding our optimistic expectations, and perhaps most importantly, putting us on pace to deliver the fastest delivery speeds for Prime customers in our 29-year history.”
  • “The AWS team continues to innovate and deliver at a rapid clip, particularly in generative AI, where the combination of our custom AI chips, Amazon Bedrock being the easiest and most flexible way to build and deploy generative AI applications, and our coding companion (CodeWhisperer) allowing enterprises to have the equivalent of an experienced engineer who understands all of their proprietary code is driving momentum with customers, including:
    • Adidas
    • Booking.com
    • GoDaddy
    • LexisNexis, Merck
    • Royal Philips
    • United Airlines.”

Sell Cassette Tapes

Have you ever considered that you can even sell cassette tapes? It’s approaching that time, when you are probably thinking about sorting your house out. Getting rid of the old and bringing in the new. But before you throw all your unwanted items in the bin, why not take a minute to see if anything’s worth a little money.

Here at MoneyMagpie, we’ve previously shared with you our tips on how to make money selling your own VHS tapes. Now we want to share with you how to make money sell your old cassettes tapes.

Cassette tapes have been considered outdated for a number of years due to the emergence of streaming and the introduction of the CD. But in recent years there has been a resurgence in the number of cassettes sold. Research from the BPI showed that in 2020, 157,000 cassettes had been sold in the UK, in 2021 this number rose to 185,000 a growth of 19%. So, instead of throwing out that dusty pile of tapes, why not see if they’re worth anything?

What to do with old cassette tapes

Who buys old cassette tapes

Making Money from old Casettes

Living in the digital age makes us often forget about the humble cassette tape. However, there are lots of online options when it comes to where to sell cassette tapes but remember sometimes selling in person can be just as effective.

eBay

eBay is the biggest online auction site so it’s a good place to start when selling your old cassette tapes. From Bjork to 2Pac to the Spice Girls, if you can name it, it’s probably on there. Take some time to peruse the site and price your tapes accordingly. You can sell them as singles or job lots but either way you’re going to cash in on your junk.

Amazon

Amazon lets you list what you want on your own store so it could be the perfect place to sell your collection, but it is worth taking into account the selling fees they charge for using their site.

Local record stores

If you do your research, you might find a local record store that’s willing to take your old cassettes off your hands. You might not get as much as if you sell online but you don’t have to worry about posting them out and you’ll get your money there and then.

Car boot sales and vintage fairs

We all love a good car boot sale, so why not find out where your local one is and get yourself a table. You might meet a local music lover who wants to buy your tapes or who could point you in the direction of a fanatic. It’s amazing what networking can do when it comes to selling.

Should I invest?

make money from old casettes

It’s clear to see that Cassettes are making a comeback with more people buying nostalgia due to the pandemic. As well as younger people buying limited releases from their favourite artists.  So, should you invest?

If you love the nostalgia and still have a tape player that works – why not? It’s another way of supporting your favourite artists and lets you have a physical copy of their music instead of constant streaming. If you choose to invest in limited release cassettes and sell them in the future, you might make your money back and then some.

But like all investments, there is an element of risk, and we can’t predict how long the cassette market will keep growing.

Top of the charts – the most valuable cassettes for sale

selling old casettes

  1. Xero – Xero.

This title might not be known to many, but it was the first self-released and self-titled album by the band that would go on to be known as Linkin Park. There’s are not many copies around justifying its whopping $4,500 price tag.

  1. The Artist (Formerly Known As Prince) – The Versace Experience – Prelude 2 Gold

Created exclusively for the attendees of Paris Fashion Week in 1995, this cassette sold for $4,117. This very limited release also states its “4 promotional use only – not 4 sale” – but for that price why wouldn’t you sell?

  1. Various – United Diaries 1979-87

This 32-tape collection – complete with suitcase comprises all of United Diaries works from 1979-87. It’s pretty experimental music so you might not have heard of Steven Stapleton, Nurse With Wound and similar artists that were involved in its creation. It is in the top 100 list multiple times with the most it has been sold for being $2,300.

  1. Throbbing Gristle – 24 Hours

Originally limited to 50 copies this was a 26-tape collection with matching suitcase for storage. Released in 1980, each of the 50 sets was personalised to the buyer and dated, sent out with hand-made collages each one was completely unique. Initially retailing for £77 in the UK, it recently sold for £2,200 – so maybe check your attic for it.

  1. Various – De La Viande Pour Le Disco

Selling for $1,818 this French cassette is not widely known on the UK market, so you probably don’t have this one lying around in the loft.

So maybe it’s time to dig around your attic and price up your old cassette collection – you might be sitting on a gold mine.

The principles remain the same whether you’re keen on starting a small-scale boutique or a large-scale glass manufacturing company. Let’s navigate this path together to turn your business concept into a thriving reality.

Research Your Market

The first step in starting a glass business is thoroughly researching your market. This involves understanding your target customers and their needs and how to meet them through your products or services.

Conducting market research also helps you identify any potential competition and what differentiates your business from theirs. It’s crucial to have a clear understanding of the demand for glass products in your area, as well as any potential growth opportunities. This information will help you shape your business strategy and make informed decisions.

Develop a Business Plan

A solid business plan is the backbone of any successful venture. It serves as a roadmap for your business, outlining your goals, strategies, and financial projections. Your business plan should include a thorough market analysis, unique selling proposition, and target customers.

It should also detail your business’s organizational structure, marketing and sales plans, and financial projections for the next 3-5 years. A well-crafted business plan helps you stay focused and is a useful tool when seeking funding from potential investors or financial institutions.

Select the Right Location

Choosing the right location for your glass business can make all the difference in its success. Depending on your target market and business model, you may need a storefront or a workshop to operate from.

When considering locations, it’s essential to keep in mind factors such as foot traffic, accessibility, and proximity to potential customers, as well as code compliance if you’re renting. A well-chosen location can attract more customers and help your business thrive.

Tips in Setting Up Your Lawn Care Business Venture

Home Business Magazine Online

Starting a lawn care business can be a rewarding endeavor for those who have a knack for outdoor work and appreciate the aesthetic satisfaction a well-groomed lawn can offer. Like any business venture, setting up a lawn care company requires careful planning and strategy.

This guide provides essential tips to effectively establish your lawn care business, covering aspects from initial planning and financial considerations to marketing strategies.

Planning Your Business Model

The first step in setting up your lawn care business is to determine the type of services you will offer and how you will structure your company. Will you specialize in mowing and trimming, or will you also provide landscaping and garden maintenance services?

Will you operate as an independent contractor, a sole proprietorship, or a limited liability corporation (LLC)? These are crucial decisions that will affect your operational and legal matters, so it is vital to research and consult with professionals before making a decision.

Financial Considerations

Starting any business requires an initial investment, and lawn care companies are no exception. From purchasing equipment and supplies to marketing expenses, you must clearly understand the financial requirements to start your business.

Creating a detailed budget plan and considering alternative funding options such as business loans or partnerships is advisable. Additionally, setting competitive prices for your services while considering the costs involved to ensure profitability is essential.

Obtaining Necessary Permits and Licenses

Before starting operations, you must obtain any necessary permits and licenses from your state or local government. These may include general business licenses, zoning permits, and pesticide application certifications. Failing to comply with these legal requirements can result in hefty fines or even the closure of your business.

Investing in Quality Equipment

A successful lawn care company needs reliable, efficient equipment to provide high-quality services. Invest in quality equipment such as mowers, trimmers, leaf blowers, and other essential tools that are suited for the types of services you offer. Regular maintenance and repairs are also crucial to ensure your equipment’s longevity and avoid disruptions in your business operations. It’s best to talk to professionals to learn more about the equipment you need.

Marketing Strategies

To grow your lawn care business, you need effective marketing strategies to attract and retain new customers. Consider creating a strong online presence through social media platforms or a website.

Additionally, word-of-mouth advertising can be powerful, so provide exceptional services to encourage referrals from satisfied customers.

Expanding Your Services

As your business grows, you may consider expanding your services to accommodate a larger market and increase revenue. This could include offering additional landscaping or pest control services.

However, planning and researching carefully before diversifying your offerings is essential to ensure they align with your business model and target market. Expanding your services can bring you many benefits, but it can also be a challenging process, so take your time and make informed decisions.

Continuously Improve and Adapt

The lawn care industry continually evolves, with new technologies and techniques emerging. You must continuously improve your services and adapt to changing market trends to stay competitive.

Consider attending workshops or training programs to enhance your skills and keep up-to-date with industry developments. Ask around or research online about seminars and workshops relevant to your business.

Additionally, listen to feedback from satisfied and dissatisfied customers to improve your services continually.

Conclusion

In conclusion, setting up a lawn care business requires careful planning and consideration of various factors to ensure its success. By following these tips and continuously investing in your business’s growth, you can establish a thriving lawn care company that provides quality services and generates substantial profits.

Pros and Cons of Hiring Long Distance Movers

Home Business Magazine Online

When it comes time to make an out-of-state move, many people consider hiring long-distance movers to handle the logistics. Movers based in major metropolitan areas like Chicago, New York, and Los Angeles are often an attractive option, given their experience with long-haul routes crossing multiple state lines. However, there are also some potential drawbacks to hiring movers located far away from your destination. This article will examine the key pros and cons of using long-distance movers from large cities for relocations, providing an overview of what to expect so you can make an informed decision. We’ll look at the benefits these big city movers can offer, weighing them against some of the disadvantages. Tips on evaluating potential movers are also included to help find a reliable long-distance company that best fits your moving needs.

Pros of Using Long Distance Movers from Large Cities

Experience with Long-Haul Logistics

One major advantage of using long distance movers is their extensive experience in managing long-haul relocations across multiple states. Movers in metropolitan hubs regularly transport entire households over 500+ miles, crossing state lines and navigating complex routes. They have optimized logistics for these long trips, from planning efficient loading/unloading to coordinating food and rest stops for drivers. Their familiarity with executing long distance moves saves clients time and headaches.

Knowledge of Regulations for Cross-State Transportation

Movers based in cities also frequently stay up-to-date on the regulations for legally transporting rental trucks and moving equipment across state lines. Regulations can vary for vehicle inspections, insurance, special permissions, etc. Professional movers know how to navigate these rules and secure any necessary permits so your interstate move stays compliant.

Access to National Rental Networks

Big city moving companies have connections with national equipment rental companies like U-Haul, Penske, and Budget. This allows them to reserve a large fleet of trucks, trailers, and other moving rentals ahead of time to meet demand during busy moving seasons. Even for last-minute long-distance moves, they can pull from these rental networks to secure trucks and ensure your move isn’t delayed.

Vetted for Licensing and Background Checks

Reputable moving companies from major cities undergo licensing and approval processes mandated in their state. This typically includes criminal background checks for employees and meeting insurance coverage minimums. While requirements vary by state, passing these screenings provides some assurance of professional conduct and accountability.

Large Fleet Size for Busy Seasons

Movers based in population hubs maintain a large fleet of trucks, equipment, and moving crews to take on heightened demand during peak moving weeks in the summer and spring. Even for challenging dates like June 30th or July 4th weekend, an established city mover has the staff and vehicles available to complete moves without excessive delays.

Route Optimization Knowledge

After years of transporting belongings cross-country from a central hub, long distance movers gain intel on optimizing national routes. They know the quickest highways and can avoid congestion around cities. Their familiarity with the fastest routes across the U.S. ultimately saves days of travel time for customers.

Cons of Using Long Distance Movers from Large Cities

While using long distance movers from major cities has many advantages, there are also some potential drawbacks to consider:

Higher Costs

The largest downside is often the higher cost compared to hiring local movers within your home state. Long-haul transport racks up more mileage, fuel charges, and equipment fees that get passed onto the customer. Extra insurance, permits, and accommodations for long-haul moves also drive up the price. However, reputable long distance movers are transparent about all costs up front.

Communication Issues

Coordinating with a mover located states away can present some communication challenges. It may be harder to get quick answers to questions or last-minute changes via phone/email. Scheduled move dates also need to be set further in advance. However, movers are used to managing these logistics challenges that come with long distance relocations.

Unfamiliar with Local Details

Movers based in other major cities may be less familiar with the local roads, regulations, and traffic patterns around your neighborhood. This could mean more time is needed for loading, unloading, and navigating to your home. However, saving days of drive time across the country often offset this.

Exposure to Delays

Inclement weather, traffic jams, and potential truck breakdowns become more likely to impact a move as the distance traveled increases. There is a higher chance of delays from unforeseen issues. However, experienced long-haul movers plan extra time allowances and backup options in case delays occur en route.

Overall, the pros of hiring long distance movers outlined earlier — like logistics expertise, equipment access, and route knowledge — provide significant benefits that often outweigh these disadvantages for interstate moves. Their specialized services are what you need to make a cross-country relocation go smoothly.

Tips for Evaluating and Choosing a Mover

When evaluating long distance moving companies, especially last-minute movers, look for red flags like exceptionally low estimates or lack of a USDOT number. Check ratings and reviews on sites like Yelp. Request and contact references who had similar long-haul moves. Get binding estimates in writing from multiple companies before booking, so there are no surprises later. Following these tips helps avoid scams and vet professional interstate movers that best fit your relocation needs.

Long distance movers from large cities offer logistics experience and equipment access that outweigh the higher costs. However, careful vetting is still essential to avoid scams and find the best fit. Planning ahead, budgeting extra time/money, and doing thorough research enables a smooth interstate move. While not ideal for local relocations, or complex out-of-state moves, hiring professional movers based in a major metro area can provide the expertise and resources to get your belongings delivered safely door-to-door.

Survey: Only 26% of SMBs are using AI for marketing

Small and medium-sized businesses (SMBs) have been slow to adopt AI technology. While 74% of SMBs are not using AI, 44% of those hope to start using it within the next year, a survey has found.

Why we care. Marketers have felt overwhelmed by AI and all the changes we’ve seen in the past year. SMBs that can unearth the potential of AI tools and harness its power can reap the benefits (e.g., saving time and money). But it’s a steep learning curve and SMBs typically are time-strapped.

By the numbers. Larger SMBs (with over 50 employees) are more likely to be using AI, according to a report from Constant Contact:

  • 40% of SMBs with 50+ employees use AI.
  • 30% of SMBs with 10-49 employees use AI.
  • 12% of SMBs with 1-9 employees use AI.

How SMBs use AI. So how are those 26% of SMBs that have adopted AI using it most in marketing?

  • 52% for social media.
  • 44% for content creation (writing and images).
  • 41% for email campaigns.

Benefits for SMBs using AI. Ninety-one percent of SMBs that use AI said it has helped their business be more successful, according to the survey.

  • 72% of marketers said using AI helped them save more than 25 minutes per week.

SMBs also expect to save money as a result of using AI for marketing, with 72% saying it will save them up to $5,000 per year:

Home Business

Barriers to entry. Many surveys have shown the biggest barrier to implementing AI is a lack of training and education. This is also true among SMBs:

  • 80% of SMBs have a beginner- or intermediate-level understanding of using AI for marketing.

The biggest concerns preventing SMBs from using AI include data security, costs and the time needed to learn how to use and implement it.

Google AR beauty ads now let brands promote lip, eye products

Google is expanding its AR Beauty ads to let brands showcase lip and eye products, with plans to soon add foundation.

This augmented reality experience for cosmetic products (lipstick and eyeshadow) was initially launched in 2020.

Why we care. Beauty brands may want to experiment with Google’s virtual try-on experience to see whether the AR Beauty ads help increase product purchases.

New beauty features for shoppers. In addition to bringing its AR beauty features to mobile browsers, Google also announced new ways for shoppers to shop:

  • Hair color. Consumers can now try out different at-home hair colors from the L’Oreal suite of brands using Google’s AR technology. The platform will soon be adding more brands to its roster, including Splat and Revlon.
  • Foundation. Google will soon roll out the ability for consumers to virtually try on different shades of foundation to help them decide their best match before making a purchase. Shoppers will just need to search for a foundation type or name, select the product that they are interested in and tap “try on”.

How it works. The new try-on experience will replace the ad product image in eligible Shopping ads. It will feature alongside relevant product information to help beauty brands showcase their products in a more interactive way to capture demand.
