OpenAI announced that its highly-anticipated paid version of ChatGPT has launched. Called ChatGPT Plus, it will only be available for people who live in the U.S.
Despite earlier pricing rumors reported in the media, ChatGPT Plus won’t cost $42 a month. It will cost $20 per month.
People who have been on the waitlist for the paid version should expect an invite “over the coming weeks.” The company also said it plans to “soon” offer the service in additional countries.
What you get for $20 a month. OpenAI said the paid version will offer three benefits over the free version:
General access to ChatGPT, even during peak times
Faster response times
Priority access to new features and improvements
Why we care. ChatGPT is a technology that has several use cases in search marketing, whether it’s for SEO or PPC. So if you’ve found yourself unable to use ChatGPT because the service was at capacity, now you have the cure – and it will cost you $20 a month.
As reported earlier, we are now learning more about Microsoft’s plans to incorporate ChatGPT into Bing Search. Reed Albergotti said that it is not just ChatGPT from OpenAI that is being added to Bing Search but a faster and richer version named GPT-4.
The report. The report says, “The most interesting improvement in the latest version described by sources is GPT-4’s speed. Right now, it can take a while — sometimes minutes in my experience — for ChatGPT to answer.”
Currently, ChatGPT, which runs off GPT-3.5, feels slow and can take minutes to output the result. The replies generated through GPT-4 reportedly “sound more human and are more detailed,” the report says.
GPT-4. GPT-4, which stands for Generative Pre-trained Transformer 4, is a neural network created by OpenAI. It is the next version of GPT-3.5, which is currently used by ChatGPT.
As a reminder, OpenAI introduced ChatGPT in November 2022. It is built on OpenAI’s GPT-3.5 family of large language models, and is fine-tuned with both supervised and reinforcement learning techniques.

Google in trouble? As I said before, I don’t think Google is in trouble despite reports of “code red” at Google over the AI based Chatbot. Google has advanced AI and machine learning that can likely do exactly what ChatGPT does already or better. In fact, Google is rumored to have started on its own version named Apprentice Bard.
Why we care. Any new search feature, especially a chatbot, can change searcher behavior. Understanding searcher behavior, and showing up in the places that people are searching, is important to drive awareness, traffic and business for you and your clients.
This is very new but there has been a lot of interest in this type of AI by search engines and marketers alike. I am sure we all will be carefully watching this space to make sure we smartly leverage it for clients and stakeholders.

OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, today released an AI Text Classifier that might be able to help you determine whether the text you’re reading was written by AI or a human.
But there’s a but.
OpenAI notes it’s “impossible to reliably detect all AI-written text” and it has “not thoroughly assessed the effectiveness of the classifier in detecting content written in collaboration with human authors.”
Why we care. There are already a variety of AI content detectors. If these tools are able to do a fairly effective job of identifying AI-generated text, it’s safe to assume search engines can. Think: Google’s helpful content system.
Also, if you are publishing content, it may be smart of you to run any content submitted by your agency or freelance writers through these tools. We’re entering a new era – and you don’t want to publish anything that could potentially get your site flagged as publishing automatically generated content, which is against Google’s guidelines. We have already started using tools like this for all contributed content here at Search Engine Land.
What is the AI Text Classifier? OpenAI calls its new tool a “fine-tuned GPT model that predicts how likely it is that a piece of text was generated by AI from a variety of sources, such as ChatGPT.”
It has some limitations – most notably the results may be inaccurate. OpenAI primarily trained the tool on English content written by adults so it’s entirely likely there will be false positives. Also, as OpenAI pointed out, it’s easy to edit AI-generated text to pass as human-generated. As noted in its FAQ section:
“The results may help, but should not be the sole piece of evidence, when deciding whether a document was generated with AI. The model is trained on human-written text from a variety of sources, which may not be representative of all kinds of human-written text.”
The results of the classifier. After you paste your text into tool (Open AI says you need a minimum of 1,000 characters, which is roughly 150-250 words) the AI Text Classifier will evaluate whether the text was generated using AI. You will see one of five labels:
Very unlikely.
Unlikely.
Unclear if it is.

We have reached the finish line – the seemingly longest month on record has finally ended. January is no more!
However, as we head into February, there are a few events and changes you may need to be aware of. These could impact your finances and the wider economy. It’s good to stay up to date to ensure you don’t face any nasty shocks during the coming weeks.
Here are six financial changes happening in February.
At the end of February, energy regulator Ofgem will announce the new energy price cap. This will be announced on February 27th, and will apply between April and June of this year. Although nothing is yet confirmed, Ofgem’s Chief Executive Jonathan Brearley has suggested the price cap may drop below £3,000.
If the energy cap does fall below this amount, customers would only save a small amount of money due to the current energy price guarantee set by the Government. Although the price cap will be below £3,000 annually for the average household, your energy bills will ultimately depend on your usage.
Water bill rises
Nothing has been confirmed as of yet, however in 2022, Water UK announced how much water bills could rise this month. Of course, the amount your bill will rise by (or reduce by, in some areas!), will depend on your geographical location, how much you currently pay and your usage.
Different locations across the UK are under different water companies, with each company responsible for setting bill prices in their area.
Passport renewal fees
From the beginning of February, passport renewal fees are going to increase – by a whopping 9%! The Home Office has said new fees will help the system meet its costs through those who use it.
From Thursday, 2nd February 2023, it will now cost £82.50 to renew an adult’s passport, up from £75.50. The cost of a new passport for a child will also increase by just under a fiver to £53.50.
Applying for a new passport via the Post Office will also increase in price. An adult will now be shelling out £93, an £8 increase from the previous £85. Children’s passport applications will also rise from £58.50 to £64.
In terms of overseas standard paper applications, the cost for adults will increase from £95.50 to £104.50. Applications for children will also increase, from £65.50 to £71.50.
Bank of England’s quarterly meeting
The Bank of England’s Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meets every quarter to decide if interest rates should increase. The next meeting will take place in just two days’ time, on February 2nd.
If interest rates should increase again, the cost of borrowing will become more expensive. This includes loans, credit cards and mortgage repayments even more costly.
This could be good news, however, for those with savings. Savings rates will get a boost as banks continue to offer the highest interest rates seen in years.
Changes to Universal Credit
If you are in receipt of Universal Credit, an important change is being put into place. Around 120,000 people on UC will be impacted as a result of this, so make sure to take note!
The Administrative Earnings Threshold (AET) is increasing. This means people have to earn more to be exempt from the requirements of looking for or preparing for work.
Previously, households on UC had to earn the equivalent of 12 hours pay a week (at the National Living Wage). This meant they did not have to meet certain requirements, including looking for work.
Now, the threshold has increased from 12 hours to 15 hours, meaning 120,000 more people will be pushed into earning more in order to be exempt from requirements.
Household support
The final of the financial changes happening this month is the deadline for the Household Support Fund. The Household Support Fund was launched in October 2022 in order to help the most vulnerable of Brits through the cost-of-living crisis, especially during the winter months.
Struggling households are eligible for extra financial support through the scheme, however, some deadlines are approaching, with eligible households encouraged to act fast.
Each council has a different deadline, so make sure to contact your local authority if you are unsure. However, all councils have until March 31st 2023 to give out this financial support.

We generally use SEO tools for one of the following tasks:

But, of course, there are hundreds of tools to choose from. I’m not going to pretend that the list below is fully exhaustive.
I’ve only included tools I use myself and only those that would apply to most people. That said, they’re tools that have proven themselves invaluable to my regular routine.
So what are they?
The usual suspects
You can probably guess what my list of usual suspects is now. But let’s cover them anyway.
Semrush
Why does Semrush make this list?
Semrush is a solid all-in-one toolset covering multiple areas of SEO, SEM and SMM and generally does them well.
Some of the key tools within the suite I use regularly are:
Audit: There are definitely more sophisticated technical audit tools out there, but the Semrush tool runs regularly and gives you a quick-and-easy place to monitor for spikes and drops in errors, etc.
Rank checking: Their rank-checking tool is excellent. You can select the location your rankings are checked from (or multiple) and monitor them daily. For those with large numbers of terms, they’re also presented in an easily digested and filterable way.
Social poster: Semrush has a solid social monitoring and posting tool. You can keep track of your progress against competitors and monitor RSS feeds to quickly and easily get post ideas. It’s not as robust a social tool as some dedicated ones are, but it’s solid and good enough for many use cases.
You’re probably familiar with much of what it does and if not, I’d suggest a trial.
Semrush is generally pretty affordable for the variety of purposes it serves (though it can get pricey if you need to add users, white label reports, or use add-ons). And since it’s generally well known, knowing how to use it is a marketable skill.
Screaming Frog
Hands down, this is the best value tool on the market.
Screaming Frog, for the three of you who might not know, is a crawler.
Give it a website or a list of URLs and configure how you want it to crawl (depth, user agents, paths, etc.), info on the data you want to collect, plus a bit of time, and it’ll return an audit of the site with various visualizations and filters.
There’s a free version that’s good for up to 500 URLs, though it has limited customizations. For a paid version, you’ll have to pony up a “whopping” $210/year. As I said, best value tool on the market.
It’s good for:
Customized crawling.
Looking for specific text or HTML on pages.
Easily export issues to send to devs.
Creates XML sitemaps.
Great visualizations.
And I don’t have to dive into the remainder of my usual suspects as you hopefully use them already:
It’s like Search Console, but with far more details and information, making it the unsung hero of SEO tools.
The unusual suspects
Technical SEO tools
Jet Octopus is another technical SEO suite. (And no, I don’t know where these companies get their names.)
The interface includes screens like:
It’s similar to Semrush but with different filtering options and of course, a different crawler. As you can see above, Jet Octopus lets you easily group issues into the sections of the site you’ll find them in, like a combination of Semrush and Bing Webmaster Tools.
I also find it gives me a different way of looking at a site structure, though I wouldn’t give up Semrush for it, making it one to add to the mix if you have the budget and need to make sure you have an easy-to-use different way of looking at things.
And some additional unusual suspects for technical SEO:
Merkle: Various free SEO tools covering everything from schema to prerendering.
Structured Data Testing Tool: For testing your schema.
Mobile Moxie: Free and paid tools for testing your mobile SEO.
Uptime Robot: For making sure your site(s) are up.
Content tools
But all the technical SEO in the world won’t get your ranking without great content. So let’s look at some unusual suspects on the content side:
A huge favorite content-related SEO tool of mine is the shockingly inexpensive Infranodus (though it arguably isn’t a content tool, it’s what I use it most for).
Within Infranodus, you’ll find an array of tools for a whopping €9/month (about the same in USD).
My most commonly used tools help me dig into the concepts included in the top Google results, and how the concepts connect to various pages within a list.
In short, you can enter a query and it will produce an interactive mapping of how the terms in the results connect to each other, which I find helps me not only better understand how Google might see a concept, but a user as well.

Link-related tools
Of course, I have tools I use for keeping an eye on links and competitors’ links.
My favorite tools in this category are:
Ahrefs
While technically Ahrefs is a suite of tools one might compare to Semrush, it’s in links that I find it really shines.
I find it catches new backlinks faster than other tools, and generally has a more robust database.
So when I’m keeping my eye on new links, looking for gaps in link profiles, or just researching competitors, this is my first (though not only) stop.
Majestic
I haven’t used Majestic in a few years, but I wanted to include it in the list as it’s a solid backlink tool worth your consideration.
At one point, I hit a threshold and had too many tools, so I made a “one in, one out” policy to keep it under control.
I had a lot of duplication in the link category so I had to get rid of some tools. But for those who don’t have this problem, Majestic is a solid option to consider (and might even be worth revisiting myself).
Search Console
I hope I don’t have to tell you why Search Console is an important tool for monitoring your backlinks, but here it is summed up in a Stable Diffusion-generated image.

Some AI tools
Of course, we can’t forget about AI. There are all sorts of AI-driven tools and I’m not going to tell you which is best as I haven’t tested them all and am far from deciding which one(s) I’ll land on yet (though Jasper has taken an early lead).
That said, you can access some of the core tech for free!
While there’s been a lot of hype around ChatGPT, I still prefer accessing the technology (GPT-3) in the OpenAI playground. It’s the same technology with (IMO) better flexibility and interface.
Simply sign up for an OpenAI account, and then you can access the API to perform all sorts of NLP-related tasks, or just play around in their playground.
It can be used for:
Content outlines.
Writing ecommerce data en masse.
Powering chatbots (though there are many pre-boxed solutions for that as well).
Translation.
And so much more, including full content creation. (Use at your own risk!)
AI tools for image generation are also popular nowadays. I’ve used text-to-image generators for:
It lets you connect with your Google Analytics (only Universal Analytics for now, as most people don’t have over a year of data in GA4, which is required for decent forecasting).
You can even choose a specific segment of your analytics (organic, for example) and forecast the next few months to give you something like:
It’s nice to be able to know in advance what things are going to look like in the future.
