In most cases (not all) you won’t actually get paid, but will get to enjoy free meals in restaurants, stays in hotels, and drinks in bars.

2. Make money tutoring

If you and your partner share the same skills or passions, how about teaching them to others and charging for your services?

Do you play a musical instrument? Or speak another language? Perhaps your talent lies in writing or pottery?

Whatever your skill is, you can make money from it by tutoring people or groups and charging by the hour. And if two of you take on different students or even siblings, you can make double the cash.

One option could be to set up a small tutoring business, allowing you to work together on marketing and admin whilst taking on clients either separately or together.

Read our article to find out how to make as much as £80 an hour tutoring.

3. Make money renting

Business people holding model house and keys

Do you and your partner have a spare room? If you do, why not turn it into a money-spinner by renting it out?

Going for short-term lets means you choose who stays and for how long, or if you want a longer-term flat or housemate you can go down the route of offering longer tenancies. Whatever you choose, this is a really is a good way to make money quite literally on your doorstep.

You can advertise your room for free on Easyroommate, Spareroom or Gumtree, or pay an estate agent to take care of everything for youTake a look at our full article on renting out your room here.

Alternatively, if you’re in a desirable location why not consider renting out your space on Airbnb? Read our advice on renting to tourists here.

Keep in mind that if you like your privacy and can’t bear the idea of sharing your bathroom and/or kitchen with a stranger, this is probably not for you. However, there are many other ways to make money from renting without compromising on your privacy.

4. Make money setting up a B&B

Bed and breakfast tray

Do you fancy the ultimate work-from-home job? Are you living in a popular area? Enjoy meeting lots of new people?

If yes, you might consider running a B&B. It’s a long term money-making scheme for those who are willing to make a real commitment and you need to be very well-prepared before you go into it – but get it right and you could be onto a serious earner.

You could make anything from a few hundred to a few thousand quid a month, depending on where you live and how many rooms you have.

It might seem like the dream, but running a B&B is hard work. It’ll take a lot of effort initially to get things going, so do consider it fully before you make any decisions. Doing it as a team will make it much easier, though! Take a look at our article on how to run a B&B here.

5. House-swapping for a free holiday or house-sitting

Couples house swapping

If you’re a couple wanting to explore the country (or world) together, house-swapping might be the thing for you – it’s a great way to get a cheap holiday or sustain longer-term travelling, whilst keeping your accommodation comfortable.

The major selling point of house-swapping is that the person you’re swapping with could live anywhere in the world, so while they’re heading to your pad in London or Edinburgh or Slough you could be flying out to their home in Australia, France, Italy, or the US.

Learn how to have a house swap holiday here.

If you want to make money, you could try house-sitting with your partner instead.

It isn’t a big money-maker- the pay is minimal and the work’s unlikely to be regular – but it’s a good way to earn a bit of money on the side and possibly have some fun whilst you’re at it.

Not all house-sitting agencies pay, so for regular work register with a reputable agency like Trustedhousesitters

6. Make money looking after pets

Couple with small Dog

If you’re an animal-loving couple, pet-sitting can be an easy and fun way to make money – especially if you aren’t in a position to have pets of your own.

Pet-sitters look after people’s animals while they’re away from home. You will probably have to visit the house a couple of times a day, typically for between 30 minutes to an hour at a time, so you and your partner can alternate on shifts.

Pet-sitters usually charge per pet, per hour, but weekly rates or discounts for multiple pets can be put in place. Rates tend to range from around £6 per visit up to £15. If you can organise to look after multiple pets at different addresses throughout the day, you could start to earn good money regularly.

By simply signing up to a pet-sitting website, you can advertise your services to thousands of pet-owners a month. If you’re in the UK, why not try Pawshake, DogBuddy, or Barking Mad?

With furry friends just waiting for some love and attention, this is probably one of the most fun ideas for couples to make money together.

Take a look at our full guide to making money from pet sitting here.

7. Make money answering the phone

Mature man using mobile phone

Did you know you can make money answering phones?

You can – options include taking customer orders, forwarding calls to business lines or taking messages, or organising appointments. Think of this as similar to the work that a Virtual Assistant (VA) might undertake.

If you’re going to be at home all day and able to take calls, then you’re well suited – but if you have to be out and about a lot, it’s not going to work for you. You need to be there to answer the calls that your clients can’t.

As a couple you can take it in turns to answer the phone and even give each other shifts so one person can pop out while the other stays in.

There’s an issue if you have small children or a dog, as you’ll need absolute silence when answering calls or you may seem unprofessional.

This money-maker is particularly well suited to retried couples who have a lot of spare time and not many commitments.

Having said that, you may still have more flexibility than you would in most full-time receptionist jobs. When the phone isn’t ringing, you’ll have time to get on with household chores or other projects.

8. Set up your own cleaning business

Couple cleaning kitchen together

Ever thought about becoming a cleaning double act?

People always need things cleaned and it can be a good way of making money in your spare time if you have flexible working hours or can give up weekends.

Setting up your own business as a cleaner can be a good extra revenue source, but with hard, high standards and a bit of luck you could see it become a full-time business.

You can both ask family and friends if they need a cleaner first. This way, you’ll both get a feel for the job and the standards people generally expect. (Spoiler alert: people usually have much higher standards of cleanliness if they are paying for it.) It will also help you with a recommendation or reference when you advertise to the public.

People tend to want their houses cleaned whilst they are working, so if you and your partner are available during office hours it will be handy and the most effective way to get lots of work. Consider cleaning offices as well as private homes.

9. Make money ironing

Woman ironing in the living room/lounge

Do you and your partner spend lots of time in front of the telly?

If yes, why not start an ironing business from the comfort of your own home.

With two of you a big load can be done in half the time, and it can be a good money-maker (remember you’ll need two ironing boards and two irons).

There’s an extremely high demand for efficient and quality ironing services, so you will need to be able to iron to a high standard and have the essentials: a good iron and ironing board. You might also want to consider how you’ll keep garments in good shape when they’re returned to the customer: maybe consider plastic or reusable suit bags to banish crumples.

Click here for more tips on how to make money by running an ironing business.

10. Collecting/making and selling

Couple searching for records to add to their collection

At MoneyMagpie we’ve come up with loads of things you can collect and later sell on at a profit.

Items that you can collect to make money include antiques, clothes, Disney DVDsvintage computers, comics, piggy banks, phones and loads more.

Whatever it is you want to collect, two people are definitely better than one when it comes to finding those rare collectibles that are hard to get hold of.

If collecting isn’t your thing but making or baking is, one partner can do all the handy work while the other markets and sells. One of you could be baking cakes or making jewellery, whilst the other is responsible for making sure the product reaches the right customers.

Bonus: Start a joint blog or youtube channel

Couple using laptop together

We don’t include this among our main suggestions of ideas for couples to make money together, because it could take a while for a blog or YouTube channel to be lucrative.

But nonetheless, if you and your partner are great story-tellers who live an interesting life, pursue an unusual hobby or travel a lot, why not start telling other people about it online?

The benefits of blogging or vlogging as a couple are endless, as each of you can take responsibility for different aspects of the content, cutting the time you spend updating it in half.

Elizabeth and Raj from Awesome Wave are a great example of a couple who are making a name for themselves as collaborative travel bloggers.

Jack Morris from DoYouTravel and Lauren Bullen from Gypsea Lust, on the other hand, each run their own hugely successful blogs, but still get to travel and pursue their photography/writing/exploring hobbies together. With millions of followers each, Morris and Bullen have been paid up to £7,000 per sponsored Instagram post, which just shows you what can happen if you’ve got an eye for visuals and the drive stick to it.

What is ChatGPT and why SEOs should care

Interest in AI technology and, more specifically, OpenAI’s ChatGPT product has skyrocketed in recent weeks.

People are looking for information about both topics.

ChatGPT and AI search terms via Google Trends

Thousands are writing about ChatGPT across the web…

ChatGPT - Google search
Source: Google Search

…and talking about it in various communities.

And as you can tell from the graphs, all of this happened quickly.

Whether your Twitter and LinkedIn feeds have been inundated with threads and posts about ChatGPT (like mine) or you’re just stumbling on the topic, you may want answers to two questions before investing your time and energy into learning ChatGPT:

  • Is ChatGPT specifically likely to be an enduring product?
  • What does it actually do and what can you personally use it for?

In this article, I’ll help you answer these questions by telling you:

What is ChatGPT?

ChatGPT is an AI-powered chatbot created by OpenAI that can be accessed at https://chat.openai.com/.

What is ChatGPT?

As of this writing, ChatGPT offers a free version of the tool that users can access, but there have been indications that they will be charging $42/month for a pro version. OpenAI has also indicated that they’ll make an API for the tool available soon.

The interface is simple, with an empty dialog to enter a prompt. The tool can perform various tasks and return text in response. Some examples of tasks ChatGPT can execute include:

  • Answering questions.
  • Writing things like ads, emails, paragraphs, whole blog posts, or even college papers.
  • Writing, commenting or marking up code.
  • Changing the formatting on a block of text for you.
ChatGPT tasks

ChatGPT launched in late November 2022, on the heels of AI Content Generator Jasper.ai receiving $125 million in funding at a $1.5 billion valuation earlier the same month. The tool reached a million users in less than a week.

But each session has a specific cost associated with it:

In the interest of helping fund those costs (and further growth) Microsoft invested $10 billion in OpenAI at a $29 billion valuation. A move which, combined with ChatGPT’s growth and word of mouth, might be fueling Google’s reported concerns about ChatGPT as a possible threat.

OpenAI has also indicated that there will be a “professional” version of the tool and Greg Brockman the President & Co-Founder of OpenAI shared a link to a Google Form to get on the waitlist:

Some users have reported seeing an option to upgrade to a $42 free version when logged into their account.

Even with the Microsoft investment, ChatGPT has continued to experience outages and even had to limit new users on the platform:

ChatGPT at capacity

And ChatGPT is starting to face criticisms over the accuracy of some of the output of the tool, while also staring down competition from rivals (which one would have to assume will only increase and intensify in the wake of the platform’s early success).

Now that you know what ChatGPT is, it’s also helpful to understand a bit more about how it works and who built it (and what their goals and motivations may be).

How does it work and how was it trained?

If you’re an SEO looking for ways to leverage AI in your everyday work, you don’t need to know how to build your own chatbot.

That said, when using tools like ChatGPT, you will want to know where the information it generates comes from, how it determines what to return as an answer, and how that might change over time.

That way you can understand what level of trust to put in the output of ChatGPT chats, how to better craft your prompts, and what tasks you may want to use it for (or not use it for).

Before you start to use ChatGPT for anything, I’d strongly recommend you check out OpenAI’s own blog post about ChatGPT. There they have a nice graphic explaining how it works, along with a more in-depth explanation.

How does ChatGPT work?

AssemblyAI also has a detailed third-party breakdown of how ChatGPT works, some of its strengths and weaknesses, and a number of additional sources if you’re looking to dive deeper.

One of the most important things to remember about how ChatGPT works is its limitations. In OpenAI’s own words:

“ChatGPT sometimes writes plausible-sounding but incorrect or nonsensical answers. Fixing this issue is challenging, as: (1) during RL training, there’s currently no source of truth; (2) training the model to be more cautious causes it to decline questions that it can answer correctly; and (3) supervised training misleads the model because the ideal answer depends on what the model knows, rather than what the human demonstrator knows.”

Another that’s important to highlight:

“While we’ve made efforts to make the model refuse inappropriate requests, it will sometimes respond to harmful instructions or exhibit biased behavior. We’re using the Moderation API to warn or block certain types of unsafe content, but we expect it to have some false negatives and positives for now. We’re eager to collect user feedback to aid our ongoing work to improve this system.”

As many people know, the ChatGPT was fine-tuned on a GPT model which finished training in early 2022 – meaning it won’t have knowledge of more current events.

It is also trained on a “vast amount” of text from the web, so of course answers can be incorrect. From ChatGPT’s own FAQs:

Can I trust that the AI is telling me the truth?

ChatGPT is not connected to the internet, and it can occasionally produce incorrect answers. It has limited knowledge of the world and events after 2021 and may also occasionally produce harmful instructions or biased content.

We’d recommend checking whether responses from the model are accurate or not. If you find an answer is incorrect, please provide that feedback by using the “Thumbs Down” button.”

Who built ChatGPT?

Similarly, understanding who built the application and why is an important background if you hope to use it in your day-to-day work.

Again, ChatGPT is an OpenAI product. Here’s some background on the company and their stated goals:

  • OpenAI has a non-profit parent organization (OpenAI Inc.) and a for-profit corporation called OpenAI LP (which has a “capped profit” model with a 100x profit cap, at which point the rest of the money flows up to the non-profit entity).
  • The biggest investor is Microsoft. OpenAI employees also own equity.
  • Former Y Combinator President Sam Altman is the CEO of OpenAI and was one of the original founders (along with prominent Silicon Valley personalities such as Elon Musk, Jessica Livingston, Reid Hoffman, Peter Thiel, and others). Many people ask about Musk’s involvement in the company and ChatGPT. He stepped down as a board member in 2018 and wouldn’t have had any meaningful involvement in the development of ChatGPT (which obviously didn’t launch until November 2022).

Notable elements here if you’re interested in ChatGPT either as an SEO or as a viable alternative to Google are obviously:

  • Microsoft’s involvement (with Microsoft Bing being the number 2 search engine – a distant second behind Google).
  • ChatGPT obviously isn’t designed to specifically be either an SEO or a content tool (unlike tools like Jasper.ai, Copy.ai and other competitors – many of which are built on top of the GPT-3 framework).

Why should SEOs care about ChatGPT?

While it’s possible that ChatGPT or another AI-powered chatbot could become a viable alternative to Google and traditional search, that’s likely at least far enough away that most SEOs won’t be primarily concerned with the tool for that reason. So why should SEOs care?

ChatGPT has a variety of functionality that can be helpful for SEOs. Additionally, given the platform’s ability to generate AI content, it’s important to understand both what the tool is capable of on that front, and how Google talks and thinks about AI content generally.

What follows are ChatGPT’s use cases for SEO.

AI content generation

By far the “buzziest” early 2023 SEO topic has been AI content broadly, and ChatGPT has been at the center of that discussion since it launched.

From creating blog posts whole cloth to selecting images, generating meta descriptions or rewriting content, there are a number of specific functions ChatGPT can serve when it comes to content creation generally and SEO-focused content creation specifically.

Create a ~1,000 word blog post about grooming a Bernedoodle

But, of course, an important concern here is how Google thinks about AI content in general.

SEOs need to identify the specific instances where ChatGPT can make them more efficient or enhance their content. At the same time, it’s crucial to understand the potential risks to rankings and organic traffic when using ChatGPT-generated content in different ways (particularly if you’re relying on content created by writers you don’t have a relationship with).

Keyword research and organization

Similarly, there are a number of specific tasks ChatGPT can execute related to keyword research and optimization, such as:

  • Suggestions for keywords to target or blog topics.
  • Keyword clustering or categorization.
Keyword clusters

A key consideration for SEOs is how this relates to your current and optimal processes for these tasks.

ChatGPT isn’t designed to be an “SEO tool,” so won’t have the emphasis on search volume, competition, or relevance and co-occurrence that more focused keyword research or organization tools will.

Code generation and technical SEO

ChatGPT is helping people generate code and build things, and it’s no different for specific technical SEO tasks.

Depending on the prompts, ChatGPT can help with things like schema markups, robots.txt directives, redirect codes, and building widgets and free tools to promote via link outreach, among others.

JSON FAQ schema markup

As with any type of content creation, you must QA the code that ChatGPT generates. Your site’s template, hosting environment, CMS, and more can break if the code ChatGPT generates is incorrect.

ChatGPT can generate lists of outreach targets, emails, free tool ideas, and more that may assist with link building work.

ChatGPT resources list

Here again (you may be sensing a theme) two things to keep in mind:

  • Since ChatGPT was not built to be a link building tool, it may not prioritize opportunities or generate ideas that will specifically help with SEO success.
  • GPT-3 is trained on old data, so the information you’re getting may be wrong or outdated.

How to think about ChatGPT as an SEO

Ultimately, given its early functionality and reception along with OpenAI’s founding team and investors (and level of investment), ChatGPT is likely to have longevity as a tool.

It’s highly useful, with a high potential for getting folks who misuse it into trouble.

I would encourage SEOs to become familiar with ChatGPT (and tools like it) and get used to carefully checking its output.

Twitter has launched a Search Keyword Ads beta test to all advertisers

Twitter just launched a beta program that’s available to all advertisers called Search Keyword Ads. The announcement was made on Twitter.

How it works. Twitter says “Now advertisers can bid to insert Promoted Tweets solely among specific search results, reaching people with high real-time intent & improving ad relevance.”

“Search Keywords Ads differ from other Twitter Keywords campaigns in that they only reach people who are searching for targeted terms when they are searching, offering a stronger signal of intent.”

Why we care. If you’re one of the remaining few advertisers left on Twitter, give Search Keyword Ads a try. The new ads can be an effective way for marketers to reach their target audience at the right time and with the right message, potentially leading to better conversion rates and ROI.

Additionally, this feature provides more specific targeting options to reach audiences, it can help to improve the effectiveness of campaigns and lower the cost of reaching targeted audiences.

Make money from police auctions in 4 easy steps

Reading Time: 5 mins

There are plenty of great bargains awaiting you at police auctions.

Anyone can attend a police or government-run auction where you can snatch up great deals on things like bikes, laptops and trainers (often paying less than half their market price).

Police auction off property that has been seized or handed in. When they are unable to find the original owner, you can bid for these products at bargain basement prices (it’s not uncommon to see £300 bikes go for around £20). You can then keep these goods or sell them on for profit.

It can be a creative and fun way to earn some extra cash.

Here is your step-by-step guide of how to make a profit from government and police auctions.

  1. Find out what’s on offer
  2. Find an auction
  3. Be careful
  4. Sell off the goods

Step one: Find out what’s on offer

Make money from police auctions in 4 easy steps

There are several different auction organisers that deal with different types of goods. Before you turn up to your closest auction, check that they are selling things you are interested in buying.

  • Government Surplus Auctions: For overstock stationery, ex-MOD and council vehicles, redundant hardware and school equipment, service machinery, etc.
  • Police Auctions: Sales of confiscated and stolen/recovered/unclaimed personal possessions looking for new homes. Bicycles, household items, jewellery, business equipment – and of course, a great many mobile phones.
  • HM Customs Auctions: Sales of seized and impounded articles from the effects of drug traffickers and racketeers.
  • Property Auctions: Government bodies, local authorities, receivers, executors, banks and building societies who have made repossessions, and many others, may sell property at auction. In some areas, prices can start from just a few thousand pounds.

Step two: Find police auctions

Make money from police auctions in 4 easy steps

Police auctions – Bumblebee Auctions

Police auctions are a great place to start. Check out Bumblebee Auctions, which is worth checking for updates on a regular basis. The site disposes of unclaimed stolen property; it’s a bit like a cheaper version of eBay, with buyers bidding until a deadline.

There are plenty of bargains – bicycles, in particular, go very cheaply. There are lots of electrical items that sell for much less than they’re worth, as well as tools and jewellery.

You can also sometimes pick up cars at Bumblebee Auctions – they tend to be in fairly poor condition but are often really cheap, so if you fancy putting in some work and cleaning a vehicle up, you could make a real profit.

There are basic descriptions of all items, including notes on condition. The current highest bid will be shown when you click on the item, so you can see how much it’s going for and decide whether you want to start bidding on it.

Items usually need to be collected from the police station’s property office. Smaller items can be delivered but the postage and packaging charges are pretty high (often around £10-£15), so you’re usually better off collecting them yourself from the station at no cost.

You can do a product search by town, so you can only see items that are accessible to you. To start bidding you need to set up an e-money account with Nochex, which is the only payment system Bumblebee Auctions accept. Once you’ve done this you can register online and get started.

If you’re successful in your bid you’ll need to give the station notice of when you will be picking the item up (usually 48 hours) so they can get the item ready for collection.

Other police auctions

Not all police forces are signed up to the Bumblebee Auctions site, but will dispose of property through traditional auction houses. Auction-Detective.com is also a useful site for finding current police auctions and it often has a selection of goods.

Other government auctions

Field Textiles sells off army surplus for the Ministry of Defence (MoD). The prices are not particularly cheap, but the range of items available is quite amazing. The things on offer can include anything from army towels and mess tins to uniforms and camping equipment.

The MoD also uses online retailers such as Mod Sales, Genuine Army Surplus and British Military Surplus to liquidate surplus army clothing and equipment, ranging from combat boots and camo-pattern jackets to ceremonial tunics and sporrans.

The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) holds regular auctions at locations in different parts of Great Britain, selling personalised registrations.

Step three: Be careful

Make money from police auctions in 4 easy steps

Government and police auctions aren’t secret, so don’t waste your money on sites that want you to pay for information that you can get elsewhere for free. Police auctions are organised by each individual local police force, so contact your local station or check their website for information on where their next auction is going to be held. Some cursory web searches will also reveal civilian auction houses that receive items from various government services.

Do yourself a favour: check the retail price for any item you bid on and verify its condition. Most auctioneers will have viewings of all listed items shortly before they are sold. Faulty, damaged, or malfunctioning items will not always be listed as such, so inspect items carefully before placing a bid. You also need to know how much the item would cost as new to make sure you get a good price. If you’re selling it on, you need to be able to make a profit.

Also take into consideration that the amount of your winning bid will not necessarily be the same as the price you pay at checkout. Most auction houses charge a buyer’s premium – money redeemed by the auctioneer on top of the sale price. Premiums are subject to VAT, as are all purchases categorised as trades or business sales. Be sure you’re aware of all the numbers before the hammer falls, since they could add up to an additional 30% on the final price of any item.

Step four: Sell off the goods

The most popular online auction house is eBay, however Loot is another website worth researching. The site eBid boasts that they do not charge a listing or final fee, so this is a great site to start auctioning off your goods and retaining more of your final profit.

If you’ve bagged yourself a cheap car and you want to sell it on, at Best Car Buyer you can attain a free estimation of your car’s value just by entering the car’s registration number and mileage.

If you were lucky enough to find antiques or art pieces then auctioning your merchandise at Ewbank Auctions can be a good starting place.

See our guide to selling items on eBay for more information.

How much can you make?

It’s difficult to predict or even estimate exactly how much can be made, however police auctions offer the best money-making opportunities, with bikes worth over £100 regularly selling for £20 to £30.

Also note that many police auctions will list jewellery as ‘yellow’ or ‘silver-coloured’ because its substance is unknown. If you acquire some metallurgical knowledge or bring a jeweller with you to pre-auction viewings, you could make a big markup on resale.

It’s a tougher challenge to make a profit with the army surplus and personalised number plates as the prices are higher, however with a bit of research some speciality websites can be found.

Have you picked up a bargain at a police auction? Tell us about it in the comment section below.

Make Money from your Cat!

Reading Time: 5 mins

Make money from your cat.

THROW YOURSELF INTO A PILE OF CATS

We’ve advertised many dream jobs on here, but this is one we know millions will scramble for as a side hustle: cat-sitting! We actually know quite a few people who do this, and it fits in around their jobs.

ENTRUST YOUR CAT TO A QUALIFIED CARER

Conversely, you may also need to have someone look after your cat while you’re at work or on holiday, and there are a good few cat guardian clubs out there such as Pawshake, Rover.com and Cat In A Flat. You may want to sign up to work for one of those businesses, or just to set yourself up as a cat-sitter. According to our recent research, you could earn up to £2350 a year.

Angie Rance, based in London, has been a cat-sitter for a couple of years. Angie works with catinaflat.com but has also picked up a few people via word of mouth, and says she can make about £20 a day. If she has the time or is required to do this five times every week, that’s £100 a week, although she tends to make more like a couple of hundred a month due to her availability.

Angie says, “Cat feeding for me has provided a wonderful supplementary income (which, after switching to being self-employed, is very helpful) but also a chance to meet neighbours, explore new bits of the neighbourhood…and best of all to hang out with friendly animals.

It’s also great for making sure you go for a walk every day!”

So there are several places to start there with your plans to become a cat-sitter. It can fit around your job and lifestyle, and you get to meet lots of wonderful felines!

OTHER WAYS TO MAKE MONEY FROM YOUR CAT

Help pet companies with market research

Just like every other industry, pet-focused companies need to know as much as possible about their target market to deliver good products.

Of course, since your cat’s ability to provide feedback is limited, you can step in and be their voice. An easy way of doing this is filling in paid online surveys focused specifically on cat products.

The best way to go about this is to sign up for survey sites, such as Swagbucks, LifePoints and Nielsen Panel. The money isn’t enough to live on and it won’t provide you with a steady income, but paid surveys are a great way to make some cash with very little effort. You could make in excess of £50 a month without doing much at all.

Make your cat Insta-famous!

make money from your cat

If you have a cat – or cats – you probably have albums-worth of pictures or videos of them doing cute or funny things at home or when you’re out and about.

People love cute cats, especially when they are doing something funny or memorable. Their demand for new pictures and videos online will never be satiated, so you might as well give the people what they want and get paid for it.

While there is no cut-and-dry method for turning your cat into an internet celebrity, but here are some ideas that might help:

  • Give your cat a memorable nickname, like the dear-departed Grumpy Cat
  • Observe their behaviour and document them doing things they love.
  • Create social media accounts dedicated to your cat. It might be good to focus only on Instagram or Facebook to start off with.
  • Use hashtags to help broaden your audience.
  • Take good quality photos and videos.
  • Post regularly to create consistency.
  • Focus on something original or specific about your cat.

While you won’t get any money from your new endeavour initially, you could develop a following over time. Eventually your cat could hit the big time, and advertisers may pay you to show their products and services to your audience.

In time you could be raking in the pounds. Grumpy Cat, for example, before his passing, earned over $100 million. Not too bad for a sour-puss!

Another way to get your cat Insta-Famous is to jump onto trends. Search data can be used to determine how much interest is in a trend, which can be a factor in how profitable it is.

Share your knowledge with others

If you’ve had cats for a long time and enjoy reading articles and studies about their behaviour, breeds, etc. why not share your knowledge with others? They may find it useful and, in time, this could earn you some money.

You can achieve this by setting up a blog and writing regular posts about interesting cat-related topics. As more and more people start reading your blog, you could approach cat product companies to partner with you. They could buy advertising on your site or sponsor some of your social media posts.

In time, your blog could even lead you to an eBook or a full-blown book deal!

Finally, you could offer to do talks at local events, schools and community organisations for a small fee.  Who knows, you might even get the chance to share your cat knowledge on world stages one day.

Sell photos of your cat to stock photo galleries

You can also make money by selling them to stock galleries and other online resources. Believe it or not, people really need these to help draw people to their articles, products or website with your adorable cat’s pictures. It’s a nice way to make some money from things you enjoy.

While you probably won’t make buckets full of cash, it could provide you with a welcome little windfall every once in a while. And your fluffy friends will live on forever in the work of others.

Read more about selling your photos online.

Include other people’s cats in activities you’d do with yours

make money from your cat

Some pet owners love their animals but aren’t able to do these things for one reason or another. But they will pay someone else to do it for them.

Cash in on this by offering your services as:

  • Pet taxi service on days you’ll be taking your own cat to the parlour
  • A pet-sitter (especially if your furry/feathery friend enjoys company)

Read more about making money with other people’s pets.

Bonus: Save money by entering cats into shows and competitions

Finally, you will notice that many cat-related competitions don’t really offer prize money. However, in many cases, once you enter your little friend, you could be in the running to win pet food for a year or something similar.

Many companies regularly run competitions like these, where all you have to do is simply upload a photo and to join.

Remember to also keep an eye out for cat shows in your local area too if your furry one is particularly bonny!

US Justice Department sues Google again, aims to dismantle its ad division

The U.S. Justice Department has just filed its second antitrust lawsuit against Google, signaling that the government is continuing to pursue cases against tech firms. This new lawsuit, which aims to make Google divest parts of its online advertising business, is the first against the company filed under the Biden Administration.

The Department’s previous lawsuit, filed in October 2020 under the Trump Administration, accused Google of using its alleged monopoly power to eliminate competition for internet search through exclusionary agreements. That case is expected to go to trial in September.

Google also faces additional antitrust lawsuits from several state attorneys general, including one focused on its advertising business led by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton. California, Colorado, Connecticut, New Jersey, New York, Rhode Island, Tennessee, and Virginia joined the DOJ in this lawsuit. Google’s advertising business has drawn criticism for its market positioning, as it operates on multiple sides of the market, giving it unique insight and potential leverage. Google denies that it dominates the online advertising market and points to the market share of competitors like Facebook.

Google’s response. Google responded by saying “Government shouldn’t pick winners and losers in a competitive industry.” In their post, they continued “Today’s lawsuit from the Department of Justice attempts to pick winners and losers in the highly competitive advertising technology sector. It largely duplicates an unfounded lawsuit by the Texas Attorney General, much of which was recently dismissed by a federal court. DOJ is doubling down on a flawed argument that would slow innovation, raise advertising fees and make it harder for thousands of small businesses and publishers to grow. We’ve already responded in detail to many similar claims made in the complaint led by the Texas Attorney General.”

Not new. In July, Google offered to split the part of its business that auctions and places ads on websites and apps into a separate company under the Alphabet umbrella in an effort to fend off a lawsuit from the US Department of Justice.

The Justice Department didn’t comment on the offer, and it was unclear if they would accept anything less than an asset sale. The company also faced a similar ad-tech investigation in the European Union, where they offered to allow competitors to broker the sale of ads directly on YouTube.

Google- too big to fail. Is Google too big to fail? Unclear. The term “too big to fail” is typically used to describe a company or institution that is so large and interconnected in the economy that its failure would cause significant harm to the overall financial system. Google is certainly a large and influential company, but it’s not clear if it would qualify as “too big to fail.”

The company’s revenue and market share in the technology industry are significant, but there are also many other companies and competitors in the field gaining market share. Additionally, Google is not a financial institution, so it does not pose the same risks to the financial system that a bank or insurer might.

It is however, one of the most powerful companies in the world with a wide range of products and services that people use on a daily basis and it has a huge impact on the economy and the industry.

A good time for competition. Competition in the advertising market is generally considered to be a good thing for a number of reasons, including:

  • Innovation
  • Lower Prices
  • Better Quality
  • Consumer Choice
  • Fairness

In the case of this recent lawsuit, that competition could be popping up just in time, giving room for more emerging platforms to swoop in and take market share.

Microsoft has significantly improved its ad platform in recent years. To compete with Google, they have committed to doubling the size of its ad platform to $20 billion.

Formerly known as Bing Ads, Microsoft Ads has a significant market share and offers many similar features and capabilities as Google, making it one of their biggest competitors.

  • Reach: Microsoft Ads has a reach of around 157 million unique visitors in the US and over 500 million worldwide, which is a considerable audience for advertisers.
  • Demographics: Microsoft Ads tends to have a different demographic than Google Ads, which means that it could be a good option for reaching a different audience.
  • Cost: Microsoft Ads tends to have lower costs per click than Google Ads, which can be beneficial for advertisers with limited budgets.
  • Integration: Microsoft Ads is integrated with other Microsoft products, such as LinkedIn, Xbox and Skype, which can offer advertisers unique targeting opportunities.
  • Performance: Microsoft Ads has been reported to have better conversion rates and more effective targeting capabilities than Google Ads.

Diversity. Not just for the workplace. Diversity in ad platforms not only keeps your company out of the eye of the DOJ, but for advertisers it could mean decreasing your risk of exposure.

Like stocks, keeping your ad spend in a diverse number of ad platforms not only ensures that those ads will be seen by more users, but will also protect you in the case of lawsuits, algorithm changes, and competition from other new-to-market platforms. Search Engine Land’s SMX Next is a great resource for exploring those emerging ad platforms.

TikTok and other emerging platforms. In 2022, Google and Facebook’s market share in the advertising market dropped below 50% for the first time since 2014, standing at 48.4%. By 2023, it is expected to drop to 44.9%. This is due to the growing influence of other digital platforms such as Amazon, TikTok, and streaming services like Netflix, as people are spending less time on Google and Facebook.

The update of iOS14 in 2021, which required apps to ask users if they wanted to be tracked, also affected Facebook and other platforms, while Google was not affected as it relies on customer intent revealed by search terms.

Additionally, TikTok’s hold on the digital ad market more than doubled in 2022, while Amazon gained market share due to its ad business being able to target users by their purchases and browsing history. Amazon accounted for 11.7% of US digital ad spending last year and is expected to grow to 12.4% in 2023. Other retailers like Walmart, eBay, Etsy, and Instacart also have digital ad businesses that are based on consumer data, known as retail media networks, and they combined took 1.4% of digital ad dollars spent in the US last year.

Layoffs, reselling plans, and dashboard outages. This week alone has been tough for Google. Yesterday, an outage caused the Ads dashboard and multiple other tools like Editor and Search 360 to be down for most users. This outage is the first of its kind this year, but 2022 was littered with multiple issues causing advertisers to grow frustrated with the platform.

Last week Google also announced plans to layoff 12,000 workers, or 6% of its workforce. After that announcement they confirmed a strategy to reduce expenses by using its network of approved resellers for advertising services, which positions the company as a software-as-a-service (SaaS) provider, making it more appealing to investors.

Why we care. If the DOJ is successful in the lawsuits, it could result in significant changes to the online advertising market, which could impact how advertisers reach their audiences and allocate their ad budgets.

Lawsuits could also stifle innovation and limit the development of new technologies, features and products that could benefit advertisers, not only for Google, but for all ad platforms that may be hesitant to develop new products and services.

Additionally, if Google is forced to divest parts of its advertising business, it could potentially lead to higher costs for advertisers, as they may have to pay more to reach the same audiences or use more expensive ad platforms.

Should advertisers be worried. Probably not. At least not yet. Google and other tech companies have faced legal challenges and regulatory scrutiny in the past regarding their advertising practices. It is always possible for new lawsuits to be filed in the future, but it’s too soon to tell what will come of the most recent troubles, and it is difficult to say if there is a reason for advertisers to be worried at the moment.

11 Facts That Prove Running a Home Business Is Now the New Norm

Home Business Magazine Online

The traditional 9–5 job is quickly becoming a relic of the past, as more and more people are embracing home businesses to make a living. Running a home business is now the new norm, with more people than ever before launching their own businesses, freelancing, and working from home. Technological advances make this trend possible. They enable people to work remotely and make a living from the comfort of their own homes.

In this article, we explore eleven facts that demonstrate how running a home business is now the new norm. We will dive into the digital economy, the rise of self-employment, the advantages of working from home, the growing appetite for freelancing and side hustles, and for home offices and remote working. By the time you finish reading this article, you will have an in-depth understanding of why running a home business is now the norm.

The Rise of the Digital Economy

The digital economy is now a major force in Ireland, with the Technology Ireland IBEC 2021 Report revealing that it accounted for about 13% of Ireland’s GDP. Advances in technology drive this growth, with the internet enabling businesses to access new markets, automate processes, and reduce their overheads. This enables more and more people to set up their own businesses and work from home, creating a new wave of self-employed people and home-based businesses.

Self-Employment and Home-Based Businesses on the Rise

Self-employment in the UK has steadily increased since the late 2000s. Moreover, it continues to rise. According to the ONS, there were 4.96 million self-employed people in the UK in 2019, accounting for 15.1% of the UK’s workforce. This is a significant increase from 2014, when there were just 4.3 million self-employed people in the UK, accounting for 13.7% of the workforce. The increasing popularity of home-based businesses drives this trend, with more and more people launching their own businesses and freelancing.

The Benefits of Working from Home

Working from home has a number of advantages, both for individuals and businesses. It allows people to work flexibly and avoid the costs and stresses associated with commuting. It also enables them to create their own working environment and set their own hours, allowing them to be more productive and better manage their work-life balance.

Working from home also eliminates the need for expensive office space, enabling businesses to reduce their overheads and become more profitable. What’s more, it also allows people to experience a better work-life balance, as they can work from home and still have time for their families.

Many of the benefits of working from home and trends in home working are featured in this infographic from Corcoran’s of Ireland:

The Growing Popularity of Freelancing and Side Hustles

More and more people are now turning to freelancing and side hustles to supplement their incomes. This is largely thanks to the internet, which enables people to connect with clients and customers from all over the world.

This growth is being driven by the increasing popularity of gig economy jobs, such as Uber and Deliveroo, as well as the growing number of people launching their own businesses and freelancing. What’s more, advances in technology have also enabled people to work remotely and access new markets.

Home Offices and Remote Working Are Now Commonplace

Home offices and remote working are now commonplace, with more and more businesses allowing their employees to work from home. According to the ONS, over half of all employees in the UK worked from home in 2020. In addition, this number is expected to rise. This trend is driven by the increased use of technology, which has enabled businesses to reduce their overheads and increase their productivity by allowing their employees to work from home.

Remote working has also enabled businesses to access new markets, as they can now employ people from anywhere in the world.

Flexible Working and Virtual Offices Are Increasingly Popular

Flexible working and virtual offices are becoming increasingly popular. More businesses take advantage of the cost savings and increased efficiency they offer. Flexible working allows employees to work from home or wherever they choose and set their own hours, while virtual offices allow businesses to use technology to create an office environment without needing to rent physical office space.

This has enabled businesses to become more flexible and reduce their overheads. In addition, it is becoming an increasingly popular option for home businesses. What’s more, it has also enabled businesses to access new markets, as they can now employ remote workers from any location.

Independent Contractors and Solopreneurs Are Thriving

Independent contractors and solopreneurs are now becoming more and more common. This trend is being driven by the increasing popularity of freelancing and side hustles, as well as the rise of the gig economy and the growing number of people setting up their own businesses. This is being made possible by advances in technology, which have enabled people to access new markets, automate processes, and reduce their overheads.

Online Businesses and Remote Working Are on the Rise

Online businesses and remote working are becoming increasingly popular, with the number of people working remotely in Ireland rising in recent years. The rise of the digital economy drives this trend, as well as advances in technology, which have enabled more and more businesses to move online and allow their employees to work remotely. Remote working has enabled businesses to access new markets and reduce their overheads. Moreover, it is becoming a popular option for businesses of all sizes.

Home-Based Careers and Freelance Economies Are Growing

Home-based careers and freelance economies continue to grow rapidly. This is thanks to the increased use of technology and the internet. The freelance economy in the UK estimates to be worth £125 billion a year. In addition, this number is only set to rise as more people turn to freelancing and side hustles to make their livings.

The increasing popularity of the gig economy and the increasing number of people setting up their own businesses both drive this trend. Technology makes it easier than ever before for these businesses to succeed. They are able to access new markets, automate processes, and reduce their overheads.

The Gig Economy and Homepreneurship Are Booming

The gig economy and homepreneurship are both booming, with the number of people working in the gig economy in the UK estimated to be around 4.4 million. What drives this trend are increasing popularity of online platforms such as Uber and Deliveroo, as well as the rising number of people launching their own businesses and freelancing.

The gig economy and homepreneurship offer people the chances to make a living from the comfort of their own homes. Moreover, this trend is only set to continue as more and more people realise the potential of these opportunities.

Technology Making Home Business Easier and More Lucrative

Technology makes running a home business easier and more lucrative than ever before. With the help of technology, businesses can now access a global market, automate processes, and reduce their overheads. This has enabled more and more people to set up their own businesses and make a living from the comfort of their own homes. What’s more, technology has also enabled businesses to become more efficient. They can access new markets and automate processes with the help of automated systems and software.

Conclusion

The evidence is clear: Home businesses are now the new norm. Thanks to advances in technology and automation, self-employment and home-based businesses are both on the rise. More and more people turn to freelancing and side hustles to make livings. Home offices and remote working are also becoming increasingly popular, enabling businesses to reduce their overheads and increase their productivity. With the help of technology, running a home business is now easier and more lucrative than ever before. This makes them attractive options for anyone looking to make a living from his or her own home.

Those who are looking to take advantage of this should take the time to research the various opportunities available and find one that suits their needs and lifestyle. With a bit of hard work and dedication, it is now possible to achieve success with a home business and turn it into a profitable venture.

So why wait? Now is the perfect time to start your own home business and take advantage of the opportunities available.
