This week, frozen supermarket giant Iceland are offering customers the chance to buy ready meals for just 1p. Yes, you read that correctly – 1p. People can buy up to three frozen meals per shop, in a bid by Iceland to help the public cut the cost of their food bill. 

Shoppers can access the offer online only. You can put three meals in your virtual shopping trolley. However, it is only available on orders with a value of £25 and up. This offer ends tomorrow, November 4th 2022, so be sure to snap it up quick! 

However, there are worries people will spend more than they usually would in order to get this online offer. Although 1p for a meal is an excellent deal, it is only worth it if you are likely to do an online grocery shop on the Iceland website anyway. 

To redeem the offer, simply enter the code READY1P at checkout. 

There are plenty of delicious options to choose from to warm you up. From hearty toad-in-the-hole to mouth-watering lasagne, there is bound to be something that tickles your fancy. You can also get your hands on favourites such as macaroni cheese, sweet and sour chicken with rice and minced beef hotpot, all for just a single penny.

Get a free coffee with a myWaitrose card

Supermarket Waitrose is bringing back its free coffee offer this month for those with a myWaitrose card. The offer was previously halted during the early days of the Coronavirus pandemic in 2020, much to the dismay of customers. 

As customers tighten their belts during the cost-of-living crisis, Waitrose is hoping to lure back in regulars by offering free coffee once again. Cheaper supermarket rivals are causing profits to wane. The benefit is being restored to those with a myWaitrose loyalty card. It is free to sign up to the loyalty scheme and become a cardholder. 

First introduced almost a decade ago in 2013, the widespread popularity of the free coffee amongst students and non-paying visitors to the store mean the supermarket had to change the rules. In 2017, Waitrose announced customers would have to make a purchase to get a free drink. 

How to redeem your free coffee

Under the new version of the offer from Waitrose, those with a myWaitrose card can claim their free hot drink when they make a purchase. You must also bring your own cup, and can claim one hot drink per day. If you don’t bring your own cup, you may be charged £4 for a Waitrose reusable cup. 

You can choose from a selection of different drinks, with Waitrose claiming the free coffee is now a higher quality grade than previous, upgrading to premium coffee beans.  

A new partnership

The chain has announced they will partner with Caffè Nero for the scheme. 

As part of the perk coming back to Waitrose, myWaitrose cardholders will be able to get 20% off Caffè Nero’s ‘Coffee at Home’ range in store and on the Waitrose website. This discount will be automatically applied when you scan your loyalty card. 

Charlotte Di Cello, commercial director at Waitrose, said: “Our customers loved the myWaitrose free coffee offer, so we’re really excited to bring it back, with premium beans from the Nero Roasting Company.” 

Will Stratton-Morris, chief executive of Caffè Nero UK, said it “feels like a natural collaboration”, with customers of each company getting mutual discounts and benefits. 

What is the minimum spend?

There is no minimum spend on what you must purchase to redeem your free coffee or tea. 

You can choose from lattes, americanos, cappuccinos and breakfast teas. You will need to pay for any other drinks, for example juices or smoothies, however you can choose from a range of milk and dairy alternatives for no added cost. 

Previously, the offer included a free newspaper for any £10 spend for loyalty card holders. However, this has remained scrapped, with no plans to re-instate this perk. 

When can I redeem the offer?

The offer relaunches on 7th November in all 331 Waitrose stores across the UK, however, this does not include garages or service stations.

Snap partners with Amazon for new AR shopping experience

Amazon is now offering Snapchat users the ability to digitally try on eyewear in categories like sunglasses, reading glasses, or seasonal glasses from a number of popular brands including Maui Jim, Persol, Oakley, Ray-Ban, Costa Del Mar and others.

Snap’s AR shopping investments. Snap has been investing heavily in AR shopping this year, including upgrades to allow brands and retailers the ability to change product information and pricing in real-time, access to better analytics, and the ability to easily create new shopping lenses.

Other brands following suit. Snap’s other brand partnerships include  MAC Cosmetics, Ulta Beauty, American Eagle, Puma, Chanel, Walmart, LVMH, eyewear brands Goodr and Zenni Optical, and Disguise.

Snap says that over the last year, its 250 million users engaged with its AR lenses over 5 billion times.

How it works. Snap’s self-service platform has a Lens Web Builder that allows brands to create shopping Lenses in a matter of minutes. This April, Snap announced it would begin offering retailers access to a new AR image-processing technology in its 3D asset manager that makes it easier and faster to build AR shopping experiences. The process uses AI and the brand’s own photography to turn standard photos into AR assets, Snap explained at the time.

Access the new Amazon Lenses. To access the new Amazon AR shopping feature, Snapchat users can find the new Lenses on the @amazonfashion public profile on the Snapchat app, through Snap’s Lens Explorer, through the new “Dress-Up” tab featuring AR shopping experiences, and through the Snap Camera Lens Carousel.

When users discover a pair of glasses they like, they can tap on a link at the bottom of the screen to make a purchase. This directs them to the Amazon app on their phone to checkout. 

Why we care. Brands and advertisers promoting products can create Snap Lenses quickly and easily to let users try on products and purchase straight from the app. Snap isn’t reported to take a cut of the sale, so brands can test the platform without paying a percentage of sales.

The Media Rating Council (MRC), has just given Facebook’s parent company Meta accreditation for their brand-safety efforts on Facebook In-Stream Video and Instant Articles in desktop, mobile web and mobile in-app. 

This accreditation is of Meta’s Partner Monetization Policies, Content Monetization Policies and associated content-level brand safety and suitability controls for the placements mentioned above.

What is the MRC. Meta says “The MRC is a nonprofit industry organization whose goal is to ensure metrics and measurement across the media industry are valid, reliable and effective. The MRC also works with the Global Alliance for Responsible Media (GARM) in developing MRC’s industry standards around brand safety and suitability, which aim to ensure harmful content is not monetized.”

MRC requirements. Meta says they conducted in-depth preparation prior to the external audit, during which they provided data and evidence for the auditors to test their systems and conduct their assessment. Meta says that through the external audit, they demonstrated to the MRC that their processes and systems meet its rigorous requirements across several areas, including:

  • Enforcement of Content and Partner Monetization Policies through machine learning and human review
  • Quality assurance of business partners and performance measurement
  • The controls made available to advertisers on the platforms
  • Brand safety reporting and disclosures

Testing further brand suitability. Meta also announced in March that they were testing a content-based inventory filter for Facebook Feed and Instagram Feed. “We will continue to iterate on the brand safety and suitability solutions we make available to businesses and plan to extend the MRC audit to the content-based inventory filter controls for Feed once they are generally available,” Meta says.

Why we care. Normally Meta wouldn’t be at the top of my mind when I think of brand safety. But I think it deserves a little credit. In addition to the numerous safety measures implemented, they also reinstated their political ad restrictions for the week leading up to the general election, just like they did in 2020.

Meta seems to be working hard to regain its reputation. This is more than I can say for some other brands in the news this week. Meta may not be the most popular ad platform for advertisers anymore, but it’s climbing the ranks again as far as giving marketers more control over their brand safety options.
