OpenAI launches ChatGPT iOS app

ChatGPT is now available as an iOS app. The app is free and offers all the features you’ll find on the web version.

Why we care. ChatGPT has become an essential and popular tool for several SEOs, search marketers and content creators. Now you can use it whenever and wherever you want, all while maintaining your history. Plus, the app interface seems a bit more user-friendly than using ChatGPT on a mobile browser.

Plus. You’ll need to subscribe to ChatGPT Plus to get access to its GPT-4 model, as well as the other Plus features.

Voice input. The app also uses OpenAI’s speech-recognition system, called Whisper, to enable voice input. Early reports indicated this feature to be a bit buggy.

U.S. only for now. The app will roll out to U.S. users first, then expand to more countries in the coming weeks.

YouTube to offer unskippable 30-second ads on connected TV

Non-skippable ads are coming to YouTube Select on connected TV. This means that viewers will see one 30-second ad instead of two consecutive 15-second ads.

Why we care. YouTube was the most popular U.S. video streaming platform in April and watch time increased, according to Nielsen. It remains to be seen whether a non-skippable 30-second format provides a good advertising ROI.

What YouTube said. YouTube explained in a blog post:

“We know that running longer-form creative on the big screen aligns with your objectives, and allows for richer storytelling. YouTube Select is now landing over 70% of impressions on the TV screen, so we’re making it easier for you to use existing assets in front of the most-streamed content.”

YouTube Select is the top 5% of the most-viewed and most-engaging content.

U.S. first. YouTube’s new ad type will initially be available only in the U.S., with plans to expand availability internationally later this year.

Pause Ads. YouTube also announced it will be testing “Pause experiences” on CTV. This experimental feature will allow viewers to pause videos, to potentially help drive awareness or an action – perhaps via a QR code.

Nearly 30% of Instacart’s revenue is from advertising

Instacart made $740 million in ad revenue in 2022, a 30% increase over 2021.

Surging ad business. The Information reported:

“The grocery-delivery firm’s ad revenue totaled about $740 million last year, up 30% from 2021, according to a person familiar with the matter. That’s a striking increase, given that the digital ad market was largely stagnant last year. Nearly 30% of Instacart’s 2022 revenue came from selling advertising rather than actually delivering groceries.”

Ads accounted for about 20% of Instacart’s $1.5 annual revenue in 2021 – about $300 million – according to a June 2021 Insider report.

For comparison. Advertising accounted for about 10% of Amazon’s revenue in 2022, according to The Information. Meanwhile, Amazon made $37.7 billion in revenue through advertising last year.

Why we care. Instacart remains a viable alternative for brands to promote products directly to consumers. And the company has updated its platform to attract more advertisers.

The bigger picture. In 2022, Google and Meta’s advertising market share dropped below 50%. This trend is expected to continue in 2023, in part, due to the rise of emerging ad platforms like Instacart.

The rise of retail media networks. Retail media search spend is forecast to be near $30 billion this year – and RMN digital ad revenue is expected to hit $45 billion. Dig deeper in U.S. paid search spend forecast to hit $110 billion in 2023.

Keeps Your Office Air Healthy

Employee health, as well as your own health, is extremely important in making your business run efficiently. It’s also important to acknowledge that some individuals experience respiratory conditions or have weakened immune systems. When someone gets sick and needs to take time off from work, this is an obvious loss of productivity. So to decrease the chances of this happening, improving the quality of air in your office by removing airborne viruses is to some extent controllable with a powerful air purifier.

The Atem X is successful at removing a number of viruses and bacteria. It independently tested a removal rate of 99.99% for viruses such as the human coronavirus (HCoV-229E), responsible for the common cold, the influenza A virus (H1N1), responsible for the seasonal flu, and the enterovirus 71 (EV71), responsible for hand, foot and mouth disease. The Atem X is also highly effective in the removal of bacteria, allergens and mold spores. It tested to show to remove 99.94% of E. coli and 99.92% of white staphylococcus. The fungus Aspergillus niger was removed at a rate of 99.94%. These are all viruses and bacteria which could put your business productivity at a standstill, especially for small businesses with only a few employees. It’s always best to be proactive in attending to these potential losses.

The Atem X is Energy Efficient and Smart-censor Operated

As a business owner, you probably have your finances locked in and might be curious about the extra energy such a powerful air purifier would cost you. You’ll be happy to know that Atem X uses an ultra-energy efficient fan, filter and advanced control technology to clean more air with less energy. Air quality sensors monitor room air quality throughout the day, adjusting fan speed and purification to the necessary level, saving energy when air cleaning isn’t necessary. This means it keeps the costs of pristine, purified air low, without compromising effectiveness. If you also like to turn off Wifi at night, Atem X allows you to set a time window in which you’d want to disable all radio frequency activity. You can then set the time when the Wi-Fi connection should automatically resume.

Atem X is Energy-star qualified, which means it has the “trusted, government-backed symbol for energy efficiency helping to save money and protect the environment through energy-efficient products and practices”.

Smart Filters of the Atem X

Another important factor in running an air purification system is knowing how often you will have to change its filter. With the Atem X, you’ll always know when it needs to be changed. Its smart filters with RFID technology track exactly how much air pollution they have captured. In return, its air filter indicator tells you exactly when the filters need to be replaced. Atem X’s smart filters provide up to 36 months of filter life and track the actual amount of air pollution filtered. This is a very generous filter life and you’ll appreciate not having to remember to change the filter every 6 months.

Make £25 an Hour as a Virtual Assistant

It’s International Virtual Assistant Day!

The coronavirus pandemic triggered massive changes in the working landscape. Not only are more jobs being carried out remotely now, but more work is being outsourced as well. For many businesses, hiring freelancers and independent contractors for specific jobs, rather than keeping a larger number of employees on the payroll is more effective and cost-efficient. In particular, this has lead to an increasing demand for virtual assistants.

What is a virtual assistant?

What is a virtual assistant?

Virtual assistants (VA) are essentially freelancers who work in an administrative role for a company or client remotely. They hire out their administrative or creative assistance to various clients and businesses and assist with their needs from home. It’s a win-win situation for both employer and employee. From a business perspective, outsourcing work to virtual assistants means they don’t have to provide a VA with office space, utilities and tools, or contribute any other additional benefits. While some of the key benefits for virtual assistants include the freedom to choose who they work with, the ability to work more flexible hours, and the potential to earn over £200 a day. Plus, you can do it all from home without the commute. What’s not to like?

What’s involved?

Working as a virtual assistant can involve a wide range of tasks. It’ll largely depend on who you’re working for and what they need, but it can involve anything from simply answering phones and sending emails, to book-keeping, business planning and desktop publishing. Got any niche skills? Great. The more specialised your skills are, the more you’ll be able to charge. For example, if you’ve had five years’ experience working in the marketing industry and have extensive knowledge of Microsoft Publisher, you can advertise yourself as a virtual assistant specialising in marketing and desktop publishing.

Do i need qualifications?

Although technically no formal training or qualifications are necessary to be a virtual assistant, most clients will look for a background or relevant experience in secretarial or administration work. If you don’t have this though, don’t panic! For one thing, you’ll have plenty of transferrable skills from other roles such as problem solving, team work, and written communication skills. As well as this though, the increasing demand for virtual assistants means they’re needed in additional roles such as social media, content management, writing blogs, and internet marketing. In these instances, experience in the specific role is more relevant than general administrational experience.

What do i need to get set up?

To get started as a virtual assistant you can actually keep costs incredibly low. Although there are a few things you’ll need, it’s likely that you already have them. At a minimum you’ll need a broadband internet connection, a separate phone line, a computer with all the necessary software, and office stationery. Plus, while you’ll already be paying utility bills you can claim some tax back on them if you’re working from home.

Steps to become a virtual assistant

STEP 1: Sort your skills

Virtual assistants are hired for a range of skills and expertise. Before you get started, decide what your unique selling points are and how you’ll market yourself.

Here’s a few pointers to get your brainstorming started:

  • Do you have any niche skills?
  • Do you have any professional training or qualifications in a particular area?
  • Is there an area of work that you’d like to learn, or focus more on?

Bear in mind that this is an industry that’s continuously moving forward and developing so you need to keep your skills and knowledge up to date as software and programmes change.

STEP 2: Get started

Register your business

The first thing to do to get started is to register your business with your company name. Think carefully about what name you choose, as it’s the first impression a potential client will have of you. One popular option is to just operate under your own name.

Once you’ve chosen a name for your virtual assistant business, you should check it’s not yet used by somebody else. You can check this with the National Business Register. Plus, you also need to check your business name isn’t trademarked. If it is it can cause you serious legal trouble down the line, so best to find out before!

Finally, you’ll need to register yourself as self-employed with HM Revenue & Customs which is free, but if you don’t get it done within three months of working for yourself you could be caught with a fine. Once you’ve registered, they’ll send you all the relevant information you’ll need about national insurance and tax.

Business Insurance and Tax

As a virtual assistant you’ll need to consider an upgrading your insurance policy, as working from home may affect your cover. The Society of Virtual Assistants has a very useful article here on what type of insurance cover you need and why you need it.

When you first start up as a virtual assistant, you probably won’t have to pay VAT as you’re allowed a £85,000 turnover before you have to pay it. However, if your taxable turnover is over £85,000 then you’ll have to contact HMRC to register for VAT. This’ll also mean you’ll have to comply with the governments recent changes to Making Tax Digital.

Financing and Start-up costs

Initial financing and start-up costs usually prevent you from making a profit immediately. Be prepared for this, and check out Should You Go Into Debt to Start a Business for more information.

How to find work as a virtual assistant

STEP 3: Finding work as a VA

Sign up to a VA agency

Signing up to an agency can be a good starting point to get work and find clients. However, be wary and avoid agencies that will charge you to work for them. Once you’ve paid them it’ll be doubtful if you ever hear from them again. Similarly, avoid anything advertising ‘get rich quick’ or ‘make up to £1000 a day’. Anything too good to be true on the job market always is.

One of the best websites to check out is the Society of Virtual Assistants. It’s a free service and they have loads of useful information for virtual assistants. You can choose from two different types of membership: approved and standard.

  • The standard membership is designed to support those looking into becoming a virtual assistant. It includes some useful tools. You’ll get access to the forum where you can post your queries, the society blog and other resources.
  • The approved membership is for businesses. You’ll have to agree to a code of conduct, and have professional quality website and email, which will be checked. Once you’ve been verified, you’ll be added to the searchable database. They’ll also provide you with access to the ‘jobs available’ part of the forum, which will then hopefully lead on to paid work.

Advertising your business

When you first set up any business it’s hard work making your services known and sourcing clients. Our article Finding Freelance Clients has some useful hints on how to advertise and find yourself clients.

To get your initial clients, you need to know what kind of people you want to offer your VA services to. Make a list of your key skills, what you’re accomplished in, and what you enjoy. Then think about what type of companies would need your services. What kind of companies might need you to sort out their emails or phone lines? What companies might need virtual help with their customer service?

Consider what you can offer to improve their productivity, what the benefits of your service will be to the company and what makes you stand out from the crowd.

Your advertising medium will depend on your target audience. Ask yourself:

  • What literature do these companies read/use?
  • Where do these companies network?
  • What form of media is this company likely to come into contact with most often?

Also, creating your own website is a good way to sell yourself as a virtual assistant. A website is a useful place for you to build an online CV, showcase experience and endorsements, and use it to promote your services. There are plenty of free tools that make it easy enough. How to Set Up a Website For Your Freelance Business is full of all the information you need to get started.

STEP 4: Increase your skills, increase your pay

Virtual assistants can make more money by increasing the skills they offer. Things like book-keeping, web-management and copy-editing are popular ways to increase your attractiveness to prospective clients. Essentially, the more you can do, the more you’re able to offer a prospective client and this boosts your chances of getting work. A variety of work is the beauty of being a virtual assistant and the more things you can do, the more you can charge.

How much does a virtual assistant make?

How much does a virtual assistant earn?

According to Glassdoor, the average annual salary of a virtual assistant is just under £30,000. Plus, an annual survey conducted by Society of Virtual Assistant, found that the average hourly rate for a VA in the UK is £27. These figures may help you with a rough idea, but obviously it largely depends on what skills and experience you can bring to a role.

There are a few important things you need to take into account when setting your rates. Firstly, you want to decide whether you’re going to charge based on a day-rate, or by the hour. Be wary about charging by the hour though, as you can end up working a lot of un-billable hours when researching and carrying out your own admin tasks, that essentially leave you earning less than you could with a day-rate.

However, as a self-employed person you also need to take into account a lack of:

  • Holiday pay
  • Sick pay
  • Maternity leave
  • Guaranteed hours
  • Pension contributions
  • Job security; and
  • Provided office stationery and utilities

You’ll need to calculate the fact that you’re missing out on these benefits into your pricing. Realistically, an additional minimum of 25% should be added on to your price to ensure your expenses and tax are covered. For example, if you were thinking of charging £20 an hour, then this should change to £25.

New Google AI tools will let advertisers generate media assets

Advertisers and YouTube creators may benefit from new AI solutions Google is reportedly working on.

Google Ads. Generative AI tools, powered by PaLM 2, will help advertisers create media assets, CNBC reported, based on internal Google documents. Unfortunately, that’s as much detail as we know for now.

We’ve previously reported that generative AI is coming to Google Ads. However, that seemed more about “remixing” existing assets into ads, whereas this report is more about Google actually generating those assets.

YouTube. According to CNBC:

Google has also been testing PaLM 2 for YouTube youth content for things like titles, and descriptions. For creators, the company has been using the technology to experiment with the idea of providing five video ideas based on topics that appear relevant.

Why we care. Amazon and Meta are also testing generative AI for advertisers or will be soon. Google’s integration of generative AI will be worth testing to see if it helps improve performance – especially with conversion rates down and CPLs up.

Will we learn more this Tuesday? This year’s Google Marketing Live takes place May 23. We expect it to be heavy on AI announcements. Could these – or other AI solutions – be officially announced next week? We’ll be watching and reporting on all the news from the event.

OVO and Good Energy customers to be refunded

Customers overcharged by providers OVO and Good Energy are to be refunded.

Are you an OVO or Good Energy customer? Then you may be owed a refund.

Energy regulator Ofgem found these firms were overcharging households for energy use – and have been ordered to refund customers. The firms must pay a total of £4 million, with around £2.7 million of this being split between 18,000 households.

OVO customers will receive an average repayment of £181 and Good Energy will refund £109 to affected homes.

Ofgem found the suppliers had charged customers totals above the energy price caps set in place to protect people from energy companies charging too much. As customers had been charged above these rates, the regulator has now ordered these firms to return people’s money to them.

Customers affected will be refunded automatically. It is important to note that even if you are an OVO or Good Energy customer, you may not have been impacted.

But what about the other £1.25 million owed? Well, it will be paid by Good Energy directly to Ofgem. It will go into the regulator’s voluntary redress fund, which aims to help those in vulnerable positions across the UK.

Not the first time

Shockingly, it is the second time in just a few days that Ofgem have come down on Good Energy for failures in following policy. This week, Good Energy, E.ON Next and Octopus Energy were ordered to pay a staggering total of £8 million. This is due to either delaying or failing to make compensation payments to customers.

According to Ofgem, the three firms had either missed or “unduly delayed” compensation payments. These are due “if a supplier does not provide a final bill within six weeks when a customer switches to another provider”.

The energy price caps are put in place to protect customers from unmanageable prices. It is set by Ofgem and outlines the maximum suppliers can charge for gas and electricity, per unit. The next price cap announcement is due on 25th May.

Overall, providers failing to adjust tariffs in line with new price caps resulted in Good Energy was found to have overcharged nearly 7,000 customers a total of £391,650 between January 2019 and October 2022.

Almost 11,000 OVO Energy customers were overcharged £1,492,917 between October 2022 and March 2023.

Dan Norton, deputy director of retail at Ofgem said:

“It is totally unacceptable that Good Energy and Ovo Energy customers were overcharged, particularly at a time that is already so challenging and stressful for consumers across the UK.”
