Google admits to paying Apple 36% of Safari revenue – after witness lets figure slip

Google CEO Sundar Pichai has confirmed that the company pays Apple 36% of its Safari search revenue.

The search engine shares this revenue, which is reportedly worth $18 billion, in exchange for default status on all of Apple’s devices.

Pichai made the admission while being cross-examined at the Epic Games antitrust trial, after a Google witness at the federal antirust trial let the statistic slip.

Google’s lead lawyer John Schmidtlein “visibly cringed”  when the exact percentage of ad revenue paid to Apple was revealed – a figure that had previously been a closely-guarded secret, reports Bloomberg.

Why we care.
Google argues in the antitrust trial that it’s the best search engine due to superior quality, not anti-competitive practices. Yet, the question arises: if Google is truly the best, why spend billions to maintain default status? The answer could be pivotal in determining the case’s outcome.

What happened? Google’s final witness at the federal antitrust trial, Kevin Murphy –  an expert economist and semi-retired University of Chicago professor, accidentally disclosed how much Google pays Apple while being questioned on the stand. The number was supposed to remain confidential as both Google and Apple had objected to details of their agreement being shred with the public. Google argued that making this information public “would unreasonably undermine Google’s competitive standing in relation to both competitors and other counterparties.”

Why this matters to Google. The DOJ argues that Google’s agreement with Apple shows it’s unlawfully keeping control over search and advertising. If the DOJ wins its case, a court order could stop Google’s unfair practices, possibly leading to the company’s breakup.

5 Tips for Mothers in Small Business to Beat Burnout

Home Business Magazine Online

Laetitia Andrac

As I write this article, it is Perinatal Mental Health Week. According to PANDA, 1 in 5 mothers experience perinatal anxiety and/or depression. Based on my own experience of being a mother of two little girls and running a thriving business, and the experiences of hundreds of my clients, mothers who are small business owners suffer from it even more. With the specter of burnout looming over 48.5% of mothers according to Ohio State University, it becomes imperative to explore strategies that not only mitigate burnout but also align with a framework that fosters growth and connection.

Let’s delve into five tips for mothers in small business to beat burnout, that is inspired by my LIGHT framework, which is detailed in my #1 best-selling book: Light It, How to Trust your Intuition and Build a Thriving Business.

As I know we always retain more information with a story, let me take you through the story of a fictitious mum and business owner, Bryony, while sharing the 5 tips.

1. Lean into Your Purpose and Vision:

Story: Byrony, a small-business owner, initially started her venture when she was pregnant with her firstborn, about three years ago, to spend more quality time with her family and have a positive impact on the environment. But found herself caught in the grind of twelve-hour workdays, seven days a week and not getting outside at all.

Tip: We know the large majority of small business owners end up working more than 50 hours a week. So it is time to go back to why you started your business: Was it flexibility? Was it to be present for your children? Lean into the reason you started your business. Commit and share it with your partner, your family, your team, and your clients. Reconnecting with your initial purpose provides clarity and motivation but also clearer boundaries around your work schedule.

2. Illuminate Your Priorities:

Story: Bryony lost sight of her family-centric and positive environmental vision amid the pressures of entrepreneurship. She is stuck in the hamster wheel doing everything, but at the same time, she feels like nothing is done properly.

Tip: We know the power of putting a destination in the GPS and following the route. So it is time to apply it in business to beat burnout. I call this creating your ‘illumination map’, a tool I share in my book that helped hundreds of mothers in business: what are the essential business activities to get to your purpose and vision? Focus on what truly matters to avoid burnout. Evaluate tasks, determining what must be done, and what can be deleted, automated, delayed, or delegated.

Business People

3. Gather Resources Within and with Others:

Story: Bryony is working on her own at her kitchen table and she is craving to surround herself with like-minded people who understand her vision, her passion, and her reality as a mum in business. She keeps doubting herself and her strengths as she is struggling to get clients for her business.

Tip: So it is time to pause and write down all the strengths you have, and all that you know! It is what I call gather within. At the same time, we know it takes a village to raise a child, so let’s apply the same principle to business. Take time to gather with others by seeking help and forming a supportive network. It’s okay to lean on others.

4. Honour the Journey and Make Space:

Story: Bryony is feeling impatient in her business, and that’s why she is working so hard. She heard so many stories of overnight success yet it is not what she is experiencing. So she works harder and harder every day.

Tip: If you don’t want to burn out and want to stay inspired, engage in morning rituals, and walk in nature. It is essential to create space away from the business. Did you know that Bill Gates would go into the woods often to find inspiration? When we slow down, we accelerate. So honor your current phase and understand that being, not just doing, is crucial for avoiding burnout.

Laetitia Andrac

5. Transform the Way:

Story: Bryony is feeling guilty because she is missing out on so many special moments with her family, kids, and friends.

Tip: Embrace a new way of doing business that aligns with your purpose. Establish boundaries, like setting specific times for work and family, to ensure a harmonious coexistence.

In conclusion, the LIGHT framework serves as a beacon for female entrepreneurs, particularly mothers in small businesses, to navigate the challenges of burnout.

How Background Checks Enhance Workplace Security

Home Business Magazine Online

In today’s rapidly evolving world, the great concern for businesses and employers is ensuring workplace safety. This very important duty necessitates the carefully planned use of a multifaceted instrument known as the background check. Background checks are meticulous investigations. They are not merely desirable but are also indispensable. They serve as the front line in the relentless pursuit of security within the workplace. In this comprehensive guide, we shall explore the intricate landscape of background checks, highlighting their purposes, the several types at one’s disposal, and the benefits they offer to employers and companies.

Diverse Background Check Types

The landscape of background checks is characterized by a fascinating diversity tailored to cater to the unique needs of employers and businesses. A supporter of trustworthiness in this realm is Accès Identité, and they offer a collection of background check packages, including:

Criminal Background Checks

At the pinnacle of importance are criminal background checks. These meticulous inquiries delve into the accounts of a person’s criminal history, carefully examining records for convictions, arrests, and lingering warrants. The safeguarding of the workplace finds its committed ally in this investigative process. Employers and companies can leverage these records to assess an applicant’s suitability for a given role, safeguarding both the safety and security of the workplace and the well-being of clients and colleagues.

Employment History Checks

A second type of background check is carefully examining one’s employment history. Employers are naturally inquisitive about an applicant’s prior professional experiences. This examination covers verifying job titles, employment duration, and even the remuneration from past positions. This treasure trove of information serves as the compass by which employers navigate candidate selection. It furnishes them with invaluable insights into the qualifications, compatibility, dependability, and work ethic of prospective hires.

Verification of Education

The next type of background check is the validation of educational credentials. The accuracy of a candidate’s academic history is very important and not negligible. This verification is a testament to the institutions attended and the degrees earned. It gives employers the unwavering assurance that their chosen candidate possesses the required qualifications and experiences the role demands.

Credit Reports

The category of background checks includes credit inquiries, a vital tool when carefully examining candidates for roles that mandate financial integrity. These meticulous examinations delve into the financial history of applicants, examining credit reports and ratings. While not universally applicable, this diligence is very important for roles with financial responsibilities, such as custodianship of company finances or customer transactions. It assures that candidates for such roles are paragons of trustworthiness and possess exemplary financial acumen.

Reference Checks

Contacting references unlocks a veritable trove of insights into a candidate’s past and proficiencies. It affords employers a multifaceted prism through which they can gauge the morality, work ethic, and interpersonal dynamics of the candidate. This final layer augments the assessment process, ensuring a holistic evaluation and ultimately determining whether a candidate aligns with the ethos and culture of the organization.

Benefits of Background Checks

With an array of background check types at their disposal, employers can now reap the abundant harvest of benefits that these meticulous investigations bring. Let us explore these benefits and understand how they contribute to workplace safety.

Augmented Workplace Safety

Foremost among these benefits is the fortification of workplace safety. Background checks serve as guards, meticulously identifying individuals with a history of violence or criminal transgressions. They are the lighthouses guiding employers away from dangerous individuals, thereby ensuring the well-being of other employees and clients alike.

Mitigation of Negligent Employment

Negligent hiring is bad for many businesses, but it can be mitigated through the diligent deployment of background checks. Negligent hiring transpires when an employer neglects to conduct a reasonable background investigation, subsequently leading to illicit or harmful actions by the employee.

Fidelity to Regulatory Mandates

In numerous professions and industries, the statute mandates that employers delve into the criminal histories of potential employees. This is not merely an act of compliance but also a testament to the organization’s commitment to adhering to regulatory requisites and industry standards.

Elevation of Hiring Quality

Background checks serve as a process in which hiring managers refine and elevate the quality of their workforce. By eliminating unsuitable candidates, these checks serve to elevate the overall standard of the workforce and empower employers to make well-informed and safe decisions.

Conclusion

In a world where job security is an unavoidable mandate, background checks serve as the guards, identifying potential hazards, enhancing the caliber of the workforce, and mitigating employee attrition. Yet, it is necessary to uphold the principles of fairness and accuracy in conducting these checks. An essential precursor to any background check is obtaining the candidate’s explicit consent, a fundamental gesture of respect for their privacy. It is prudent to collaborate with esteemed organizations renowned for their professionalism, such as NAPBS. Above all, adherence to the law remains very important. In this collective effort of due diligence and vigilance, all parties stand to gain, for safer workplaces are not only a boon to businesses but also safeguard the well-being of employees and clients alike.

Bing adds AI-generation captions to some search result snippets

Bing is now using AI to generate captions for some of its search result snippets. Bing is using GPT-4 to make the “search results more relevant and informative and helping users find the websites they are looking for more quickly,” Bing announced.

What it looks like. If you do a search for my, [barry schwartz SEO], and then click on the arrow down by the title link in the search results, you can see that some of the results are labeled with “AI-Generated Caption.”

Here is a screenshot:

artificial intelligence

How it works. Bing said it uses GPT-4 for these AI-Generated Captions by analyzing the search query of the user, it then “extracts the most pertinent insights from web pages, and skillfully transforms them into highly relevant and easily digestible snippets,” Bing wrote.

“Generative Captions are tailored to each unique search query and may generate different snippets for different queries. Generative captions may not mirror the exact wording on the webpage, but Bing employs a myriad of signals and techniques to guarantee the quality and precision of the generated text,” Bing added.

Block AI-generated captions. Bing said you can block these AI-generated captions by using the NOCACHE or NOARCHIVE tags.  Bing Search also respects MAXSNIPPET and NOSNIPPET metatags; find further information in Bing’s documentation on meta tags

We have a lot more details on how that works in our previous article on that topic.

Why we care. You might want to check some of your more important keywords to see if Bing is changing the description in a way that may drive lower or higher click-through rates from Bing Search.

It makes sense to watch your click-through rate data in the Bing Webmaster Tools performance reports to see if you are impacted in any way by these AI-generated captions.

Facilities Management in the Digital Age: The Power of Software Solutions

Home Business Magazine Online

Facilities management is precisely what it sounds like, i.e., management of facilities like buildings and spaces. It could be an office, a home, or an educational institute, and all these places need to be well taken care of. This is where property management software, aka facilities management software, comes into the picture.

Given the nature of most technology-driven solutions now and how habitual people have become to new tech, this software is built for the well-being of spaces, commercial or residential. It’s like a digital assistant that monitors energy usage, creates maintenance schedules, optimizes usage of space and does all to ensure the space runs smoothly.

5 challenges in facility operations

Maintaining spaces isn’t an easy feat. One needs to be available round the clock to ensure that there aren’t any operational issues in spaces like hospitals, schools, hotels, etc. The challenges one faces while managing facility operations are:

1. Space utilization

Real estate is a precious investment in this day and age. But its usage and space allocation is also a great challenge. Maximum usage of the space also means that it must be comfortable and foster a productive environment for its occupants.

2. Energy usage and sustainability

Energy usage can be a costly affair if not managed properly. Now, with eco-friendly options widely available, the challenge is to balance both traditional and sustainable modes of energy in the facility.

3. Maintenance services

Whether it’s an AirBnB or a training center, all facilities need regular maintenance facilities for their upkeep. The challenge is to schedule maintenance activities, conduct follow-ups and oversee routine cleaning tasks.

4. Technology integration

Today, due to technology, companies have come up with online applications that provide maintenance scheduling services, like cleaning or security at market rates. The challenge is finding a feature-rich provider that can easily be merged into your current systems.

5. Compliance to standards

All commercial and residential facilities are subject to the laws and regulations of the geographical area they’re in. Certain state and federal regulations like safety standards and environmental restrictions also influence the maintenance of a particular facility. The challenge is in understanding all these laws and being compliant with them.

5 benefits of facilities management software

The management of facilities has seen an upgrade in the past decade with customers warming up to technology. Facilities management software is feature-rich, apart from maintenance, it also deals with asset management, space planning and more. The role of this software is rewarding as it provides the following benefits:

1. Better space utilization

Facilities management software analyzes the place and plans its usage accordingly. It provides insights and suggestions on how the space can be used best and also minimizes the need for extra space. Once you have a basic sketch of how to utilize your space, you can allocate resources accordingly.

2. Streamlined maintenance operations

Instead of you calling and following up with service companies, the software handles all tasks from repair to installation. It creates a schedule for which maintenance activity is required and when and takes the burden of calling and scheduling off your back. This leads to higher efficiency and less downtime. For example, in a hotel setup, the software assists in managing the housekeeping staff’s schedules and tasks.

3. Savings on services

By creating maintenance schedules in advance and allocating resources, the software can reduce operational costs significantly. It also identifies potential risks in advance and gets the repair done, saving you from unnecessary and expensive emergency services.

4. Data-driven decision making

The software analyzes historical data to figure out what maintenance service has worked best in the facility and what steps can be taken. Based on the data available, the software makes sure that you get good quality services done at regular intervals with the available resources.

5. Safer and compliant spaces

The property management software keeps track of the changing laws and ensures that buildings and spaces are meeting the legal and safety obligations. This helps in preventing hazards and penalties.

Facilities management software: a modern solution to a constant problem

Facilities management software, like Zuper, emerges as a powerful tool that changes the landscape of facility operations. With its exhaustive field service management features across data management, CRM, invoicing, and inventory management, it’s exactly what companies need to use to thrive in their respective industries — book a demo to know more.

Why Your E-commerce Business Needs a Shopify and Microsoft Access Integration

Home Business Magazine Online

E-commerce platforms like Shopify have become the cornerstone for businesses looking to sell online. Shopify excels in providing a seamless interface for product listings, customer engagement, and order processing. On the other side of the spectrum, we have Microsoft Access — a robust database management system designed for data storage, retrieval, and manipulation. While each platform is powerful on its own, the magic truly happens when they are integrated. Data integration is not just a technical requirement but a business imperative in the e-commerce world. It enables real-time updates, streamlines inventory management, and offers enhanced reporting capabilities. This article delves into why your e-commerce business can significantly benefit from integrating Shopify with Microsoft Access.

The Challenge: Managing E-commerce Data

Managing data in an e-commerce environment is a complex undertaking that goes beyond simply listing products for sale. Platforms like Shopify offer a range of features for handling product information, customer data, and order histories. However, as your business scales, these datasets grow exponentially in both size and complexity. You’ll find yourself juggling multiple product variants, dealing with intricate customer segmentation, and tracking a myriad of order statuses. While Shopify is equipped with basic data management and analytics tools, it has its limitations when it comes to advanced data manipulation and reporting. Standalone e-commerce platforms often lack the flexibility to perform complex queries, generate custom reports, or integrate seamlessly with other business systems. This can result in data silos, operational inefficiencies, and missed opportunities for data-driven decision-making. Therefore, the challenge lies not just in managing the sheer volume of data, but in harnessing it effectively for business optimization. Integrating Shopify with a specialized database management system like Microsoft Access can offer a solution to these challenges.

Why Microsoft Access?

Microsoft Access serves as a highly versatile database management system that excels in organizing, storing, and manipulating large sets of data. With its relational database capabilities, Access allows for intricate queries, custom report generation, and advanced data analytics. It also offers a user-friendly interface, making it accessible for users who may not have extensive database management experience. These capabilities make Microsoft Access an ideal tool for handling the complexities of e-commerce data that platforms like Shopify may not be fully equipped to manage.

When integrated with Shopify, Microsoft Access complements the e-commerce platform’s existing data management features by filling in the gaps. For instance, while Shopify is excellent for front-end operations like product listings and customer interactions, Access can handle back-end data manipulation tasks with greater efficiency. This includes complex queries to segment customer data, custom reporting to analyze sales trends, and even automating inventory updates. The integration allows for a more holistic approach to data management, enabling businesses to leverage the best of both platforms. By doing so, companies can achieve a higher level of operational efficiency and data-driven decision-making, thereby gaining a competitive edge in the market.

The Power of Integrating Shopify with Microsoft Access

Real-time Data Updates

One of the most compelling advantages of integrating Shopify with Microsoft Access is the ability to achieve real-time data updates. This means that any changes made in your Shopify store—be it new orders, customer sign-ups, or inventory adjustments—are immediately reflected in your Microsoft Access database. Real-time data is crucial for making timely business decisions. For example, if a product is selling out quickly, real-time data allows you to respond immediately, perhaps by adjusting marketing strategies or expediting restocking procedures.

Inventory Management

Managing inventory is often a complex and time-consuming task for e-commerce businesses. However, the integration between Shopify and Microsoft Access can significantly automate and streamline this process. With Microsoft Access, you can set up custom queries and automated workflows that sync with your Shopify inventory. This can help in maintaining optimal stock levels, predicting inventory needs, and even automating reordering processes, thereby reducing the risk of stockouts or overstocking.

Enhanced Reporting

While Shopify provides basic reporting features, Microsoft Access takes data analytics to the next level. With its advanced querying capabilities, you can generate custom reports that offer deeper insights into your business. Whether you’re looking to analyze customer behavior, sales trends, or financial metrics, Microsoft Access allows you to create detailed, tailored reports. These reports can be invaluable for strategic planning, helping you identify opportunities for growth and areas for improvement.

The integration of Shopify and Microsoft Access offers a powerful combination for e-commerce businesses. It not only simplifies data management but also provides the tools needed for advanced data analysis and automation, thereby empowering businesses to operate more efficiently and make data-driven decisions.

How to Connect Shopify to Microsoft Access using ODBC Connector

This guide outlines the steps to establish a connection between Microsoft Access and Shopify using an ODBC driver. Microsoft Access serves as a robust database management system that merges a relational database engine with a user-friendly graphical interface.
